I love the "tricks are for kids" line between The Bride and O-Ren. It says so much with so little. You immediately know how close/familiar they were, because they have their own inside joke that they say together. It's a little touch, but it's great.

The fight scene is even more impressive in the Japanese version of the movie; for the international release they had to do black and white to hide all the blood, but also they had to do a lot of micro edits to cut out the limbs getting hacked. In the original uncut version, the choreography is so impressively fluid and coordinated. Its available right here on yt if anyone wants to see.

Part of the in-joke is that Sonny Chiba had previously played Hattori Hanzo- a famous ninja- in a period piece about Japan’s Warring States era. I don’t believe that they’re ever specifically stated to be connected, but I think it’s implied somewhere in the literature surrounding this film that this Hattori Hanzo is supposed to be a descendant of the original ninja. Also, the story of vol. 1 and O-Ren’s white costume are a reference to an older Japanese film and manga series called ‘Lady Snow-blood,’ in which a young woman becomes an assassin to avenge her murdered family. The song sung when O-Ren falls into the snow is actually the theme song from one of the ‘Snow-blood’ films.

The name for the weapon Gogo uses is just about the coolest thing in the world. It's called a meteor hammer. I was a teenager when this movie came out and I actually bought one. They are so much fun when you get good at using them, but the process of learning is extremely painful. I can't tell you how many times I hit myself in the shins. A metal ball to the shin does not feel good. The idea is that if you wrap it around a part of your body on one side it will unwrap on the other side, so if you spin the chain around your neck in the front of you and then shift to the back or spin your body 180 degrees it will unwrap, which is what she does right after the blade comes out. The move is surprisingly easy to do. It's one of the first things you learn.

From what I understand, Quentin Tarantino had always intended "Kill Bill" to be a single movie. But they filmed so much good stuff that they decided in the editing room that it had to be split in two -- nobody was going to sit through a single 6-hour movie 😆 It works so well though that you'd think it was intentional from the start -- particularly with that final-line cliffhanger, and the fact that you never see Bill's face until Part 2. There are other aspects that seem intentional as well, but I can't speak of them without spoiling Part 2.

The Fight in the House of Blue Leaves was filmed in B&W so the rating stayed an "R" and didn't go to "X". Hatori Honzo (Sushi Chef and Sword Maker) is played by Martial Arts Movie Legend Sonny Chiba who was known for his many Samuri Sword movies. General Johnny Mo leader of the Crazy 88 (bald guy with the Kato mask) was played by Martial Arts Movie Legend Gordon Liu. No spoilers, but Part 2 will give you more of the back story. BTW - Quentin does have a foot fetish. You are so lucky as you will not have to wait 6 months to see Part 2 like we had to back in the day.

You were talking about O Ren not having honor and why she had to have her flunkies fight Uma first… pay attention to the knife she was carrying (when she had a full sword in the next room), and how she was holding it. She knew she was no match for Black Mamba, and was prepared to take her own life before the rest of the Crazy 88 came to her aid, in the way Samurai would commit suicide to deny their enemies the kill. You can see her relief when she stabs the blade into the handrail and walks away.

"There's so much blood in this movie", right before the Crazy 88 fight is great timing. The movie literally goes black & white to hide the gore. :D

The jumpsuit is from Game of Death (Bruce Lee)...The actress who played Gogo was also in the 2000 film Battle Royale.

This is my favorite of Tarantino's films because it really shows his skills and passion for film making. It's proof that his movies deeper than face value is not some excuse to satiate a love for blood, gore and explosions but rather a very stylistic way to creat a very immersive experience that will always have an audience who these various characters appeal to. Wether it be camera style, sound and music or just the creative story for even more fascinating characters, he grabs the audiences attention through a creative style. Like how this movie follows a style of a kung-fu and samari epics about revenge while the second volume carries a feel of Spaghetti Western in lawless and ruthless revenge. Despite two different styles, it has the strength of never losing the feel of the first volume when following such a wonderful strong and tough character we feel sympathy for.

That shot of the black & white slaughter may be over the top but man was it entertaining. But the face off between O Ren and The Bride at the end is a cinematic pleasure

She couldn't fight her herself at first because Quinton needed a 45 min fight scene to round out the movie. And it's just beautiful.

The anime section of O-Ren's story was directed by Kazuto Nakazawa, who also worked heavily in the character design and art direction of numerous major anime, including Samurai Champloo, which the Kill Bill content closely resembles. Also, the steady-cam shot in the House of Blue Leaves at one point held the record for the longest continuous steady-cam shot.

I'm sure a lot of people will tell you this, but this movie is FULL of homages to a number of films from Japan and Hong-Kong films as well as some American films. Many pieces of music and sound effects are even taken from those movies. There are also some actors from those films and shows who appear in this movie. For example, Hattori Hanzo was a famous person from Japanese history. In 1980, Sonny Chiba played a descendant of Hanzo (named Hattori Hanzo III) in a show called Shadow Warriors. In 1985 there was a newer Shadow Warriors series where Chiba played another descendant also named after the famous original ancestor. Tarantino stated that while it was never said, Sonny Chiba is actually playing another descendant in the line of characters her portrayed in those TV series (and movies in Japan based on those TV series).

Great item in this movie when she goes to touch the sword and then instantly thinks better of it, recoils, and looks back to ask permission. Always loved that moment.

Warm sake' is what is mostly served in Japan when i was there...and in most Japanese restaurants I've been to. I prefer the warm to cold sake' also.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the California Mountain Snake is the only snake of those named in the squad that's actually harmless. The snake itself looks like a type of coral snake but it has no venom.

What can't be said enough is the performance by Darrly Hannah as Elle aka California Mountain Snake. She has a much larger role in the second one. Can't wait for your reaction on that next.

This movie is a masterpiece of cinema and in my top 10 beast films ever made. Its one of the few films that can successfully turn gratuitous violence into art. Not to mention the blend of wild-west and eastern music, showing that the Bride really is an all-American Samurai. And that animation segment is flawless! Super expressive and stylized.

It's really heartwarming to see younger folks enjoy this movie. Kill Bill (it was originally shot and intended to be 1 big film and was split up into 2 volumes only due to studio pressure against Tarantino's wishes) is my favorite film and has had a tremendous influence on my taste in media over the last 20 years. I feel so grateful to have seen both volumes in theaters the day they came out. Legendary. So glad you're digging it - just found and subbed to your channel today and definitely can't wait to see your reaction to volume 2!! (It's even better)

If you think this version is bloodthirsty, it's because you haven't seen the Japanese version that doesn't have a black screen, in the scene where the bride fights the 89, I managed to find it in the far reaches of the internet, not to mention that there are more scenes, this black screen is because theaters didn't want to show the movie because it was too violent, but the Japanese version is uncensored.

First of all, I would like to say I love your commentaries. I just binged watched a bunch of your old stuff and enjoyed it. You have a new subscriber. Second of all, Gogo Yubari’s weapon is called a meteor hammer. (She was the psycho 17 year old bodyguard for O-ren Iishi in case you don’t recognize the name). Third, there’s a reason why the fight between The Bride (Uma Thurman’s character) and the Crazy 88’s was done in black and white. Personally, I had always thought it was a directorial choice to represent her being “in the zone.” It’s like when an artist or athlete is hyper focused and ignoring all outside distractions. Actually, from what I understand, it was done to avoid an X-rating for all of the over the top violence and depiction of blood spewing everywhere. “Conan the Barbarian” from 1982 and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger had a similar problem. They too had to tone down the violence to avoid an X-rating. Fourth, I would LOVE to see your reaction to “Conan the Barbarian.” Despite all the violence, it’s still a very good story. They even got James Earl Jones (the voice of both Darth Vader and Mufasa) to play the villain, Thulsa Doom. P.S. Yes, “Conan the Barbarian” is very violent. BUT, there are NO needles! 😜

They initially removed the color to get by censorship in most countries due to the shear amount of gore, but despite that limitation Tarantino embraced the aesthetic as a nod to famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. His samurai movies where made back in the black and white era and was the original source of that 'high-pressure blood' troupe, which is homaged to quite often in this movie. The origin of the ridiculous amount of blood spray, particularly Akira Kurosawa movies, is an amusing story of its own if you ever look it up.

The tune you heard at the time Uma Thurman entered the house of Viveca Fox was from the tv show Ironside from the 60’s/70’s. Tarantino likes to use old music in his movies.

Masterpiece of a movie. Uma Thurman's performance is outstanding (helped immensely by her stunt double Zoe Bell 😁) The movie is so good on so many levels. The directing, the choreography by the legend Yuen Woo-ping (most famous in the west as the choreographer on The Matrix), the music by Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, the script, the cast, everything was just perfect. I personally think Vol 2 is better. Less action but fantastic performances (especially the final act). As others have probably mentioned, the reason for the B&W was to get an "R" rating instead of an "X" in the cinema. There is a version which is all color.

In the animation scene - its Bill that kills Oren's daddy, that's him. Twisted that Oren end's up working for him eventually.

Fun fact, the sushi chef played by Sonny Chiba is the father of Mackenyu, who you may know as Roronoa Zorro in the Netflix live action One Piece! ❤

I find people are split regarding their favorite being Part 1 or 2. Action fans like 1 best, dialogue/story fans (like myself) like 2 best.

As an anime, Kung-fu, and samurai fan this movie was epic in the theater. QT really hit it perfect, and it was from an idea he and Uma came up with in a cafe while filming 'Pulp Fiction.'

I'll keep it vague because you are going to do the 2nd chapter yet but I am not an overboard Tarantino fan. I'm satisfied with his works. This series though I really loved and more than anything for proper storytelling technique where it takes us on a journey. I also liked the throwback style. Anime made live action, perhaps better than most other films have done and the old foreign kung-fu film style right down to the completely over the top gore scenes. More the storytelling and acting than anything. Oh. I rented a bridal suite once where there was a slaughter. The carpet still had a huge blood stain in it. I know, I know. I was commuting and needed something and everything was taken for football and it was at a discount of course then. But yeah it is straight up creepy to sleep in that.

this movie is done to honor the 70's Japanese martial arts style movies. the shooting, the action, the music, the acting style, the blood, are all from the 70's.

The theme that played at 5:00 was the opening title to Ironside, a late 60's TV series; with Raymond Burr playing the title role of San Francisco police chief, Ironside, who is shot by a sniper and paralyzed. From his wheelchair, he forms a group of detectives to cover tough cases. The opening title was very unusual for the 60's in that it was done in red and black animation, with the catchy, distinctive, synthesized score, composed by Quincy Jones. As Tarantino is known as a student of film production, this probably caught his interest.

FYI - the wepaon on the chain is based a real weapons. In some martial arts they have a weighted blade/dart at the end of a rope or chain and use it just like in the movie. It is a VERY hard weapon to learn and takes amazing skill and balance to use. Also maybe consider checking out some of the old classic Kung Fu movies. The actor of Johnny Mo, and Master Pai is Gordon Lu who was a star in the 80s in 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

You actually noticed the camera work in the restaurant scene: the take you mentioned, is one of the longest takes, up there with a long take near the beginning of the original "Catch-22". What many don't notice, is in the anime scene where O-Ren's parents are killed, the young guy in the white jacket & the sword and revolver, is a young Bill. Speaking of the anime scenes: the detail is such, that if you're familiar with rifles, you'll note that O-Ren shoots the general with a H&K PSG-1...pretty hefty rifle for a small-framed woman, but have seen a live-action female handle one in another film.

24:00 those zigzag japanese paper streamers are called "shide" and attached to the shimenawa, the sacred rope. You usually see them on places that are marked sacred, like shrines, altars, torii gates, and even some trees and rocks.

The Crazy 88 fight scene was in black and white because the film ratings board didn't allow that much blood to be shown.

someone probably explained it already, but the black n white was because the studo said too much blood and wanted Tarantino to cut from the scene, so instead of cutting it out he said "u know what ? f u, u don't like red ? we gonna have no red in the scene" and went for the b'n'w 😁

On O-Ren's red jumpsuit comment: I think she wore a red jumpsuit tn order to blend into the red thatched italian roofs.

The year this came out I went to a music festival and the official sound of the weekend was that "ooh, ooh, ohh hoo hoo" song by that band. Drove everyone crazy after a couple of hours lol

my favourite thing in this movie is how the women all have respect for one another, and were possibly even friends, but The Bride can't let their betrayal go and they know and accept that. they're gonna kill one another brutally, but they have honour.
