Several of your "huh?" moments came from referenes to James Bond movies. Alotta Fagina is a reference to Pussy Galore (not joking, that was her actual name in the movie), and Random Task is a reference to Oddjob who is a bond villain who threw his hat. These movies are chock full of references to old Bond movies, back when they were a LOT more campy.

You don’t need to watch all the Bond movies to get most of the references in Austin Powers. The first four with Sean Connery should do the trick. In release order they are Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. Actually, I think those would be fun watch alongs for many of us.

@@VKuniaKind of funny, there's a lot of them. You don't really need to know more than the concept, campy 60s spy bullsh*t. Ridiculous gadgets, luxury cars and spiffy outfits were the rage. Bond movies can differ wildly in quality, but it's all about the lineage with Bond. Bad guys in Bond movies include Christopher Lee, Javier Bardem, Remi Malik, Lars Mikkelsen, Christopher Walken, Sean Bean, Christophe Waltz etc. Who is gonna be the bad guy is one of the biggest draws in Bond. What car is he going to drive? And the big one, who's going to be the love interest? Mike Myers actually made Austin Powers as a tribute for his father who loved this cheesy kind of tv show/movie. It was a very popular genre, ridiculous spy stories.

VKunia, in case you didn't know, there were some jokes making fun of the James Bond franchise. The extremely hairy chest on Austin Powers is making fun of Sean Connery. The big Asian assassin is from Goldfinger, except he used his hat instead of his shoe. Frau Farbissina is a parody of that Soviet agent in From Russia With Love. Alotta Fagina is a joke on those names the Bond women were given. One of them was called Pussy Galore. Bond always scored with numerous women. One of those Bond movies (I can't remember which one, but Roger Moore was in it) he was laying so many women that I started laughing after a while. When AIDS started getting people's attention, they pared down on a lot of James Bond's screwing around.

Austin is supposed to be known for being a photographer rather than a known spy. That's his cover. Though they quickly kind of drop that, and have the "Famous spy" trope. I mean how do you explain a famous photographer reappearing at the same age 40 years later. But it's really just one of those things you just go along with.

Mike Myers dad was English, Austin was the impression he did of his dad. Dr Evil is his impression of Lorne Michaels, who runs SNL, Myers refused to put Dr Evil on SNL because he wanted to keep the character for a film, he did return to SNL for the 40th season and did Dr Evil on SNL for the occasion (Prince played the after party).

Most of the references come from the James Bond films from the beginning of the franchise with Sean Connery as 007 through to the beginning of the Pierce Brosnan's era as 007 in the 1990s. A few that are really important: - Alotta Fagina: the name is based on the character Pussy Galore, played by Honor Blackman, in 1963's Goldfinger. - Random Task: based almost completely on Odd Job, henchman to Auric Goldfinger, the villain of Goldfinger. Instead of a shoe, Odd Job threw a Bowler hat with a razor in the brim. - Number Two: Played by Robert Wagner, the look of the character is based on Emilio Largo in Thunderball (1965). Largo was number 2 in the organization called SPECTRE (SPecial Executive for Counter Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion), a frequent nemesis of Bond's. - Dr. Evil: Based in part on Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Bond's archnemesis in several films. However the look of Dr. Evil is partially on Blofeld (bald and facially scarred) and partly on another Bond villain, the title character of Dr. No (1962). The rubber radiation suit is Dr. No. The gray Nehru suit that Dr. Evil wears is the same outfit both Blofeld and Dr. No wore. - Austin Powers: Partially based on Bond, with other spy characters of the 1960s thrown in. Harry Palmer (played by Michael Caine) was a spy who wore thick black rimmed glasses from a series of films based on Len Deighton novels. This is kind of important as Michael Caine shows up in the third Austin Powers film, Goldmember. Matt Helm (played by actor-singer Dean Martin) was a photographer, and like Bond always a hit with the ladies, in several films. - Vanessa Kensington and Mrs. Kensington: Both characters owe a lot to two different characters from the 1960s BBC spy series, The Avengers. The first character is mainly, Mrs. Emma Peel, played by the late Dame Diana Rigg (best known today as Lady Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones). Mrs. Peel frequently wore leather catsuits, kicked ass in hand-to-hand combat, and used guns...and looked beautiful always. Brains, beauty, and ability. The second character was Cathy Gale, Mrs. Peel's predecessor on the show. Also, a combination of amazing qualities. Honor Blackman, who played Cathy Gale, was also Pussy Galore in Goldfinger opposite Sean Connery. Diana Rigg, after playing Mrs. Peel, played Contessa Teresa "Tracy" DiVincenzo in 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service opposite George Lazenby as 007 (his only appearance in the role).

It's one big spoof of James Bond, I'd say Sean Connery especially. 5:23 Maybe didn't mean to, but that was the best part. 13:58 All that "how can she stand him?" and then "I love him". 27:43 That's super easy, even having both facing each other. You just set like a middle point in the shot that he doesn't cross, have him record the character on one side, then on the other and put paste them together. And, of course, he's got actual people reading the other charater's lines while filming as a placeholder. Well, fun fact is if you go watch the first Bonds you will see so many "Oh, that's the thing they're making fun of".

Not a cool fun fact by any means, but the actor who played Random Task as literally a killer, in a "Dateline Special" kind of way. Best not to go searching for the details if you're sensitive at all (and I think we know...) Seriously, don't. He faced a max sentence of over 250 years in prison. For a similar type of movie, but less bathroom humor, check out Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. The first wasn't really part of the series, so start with the second one. For a 2000's version of this, The two Johnny English movies are great. The Austin Powers movies were largely based on spoofs of James Bond movies. If you're familiar with those, these movies get so much better. The must see James Bond movies to make these even better: Dr. No (Dr Evils outfits) and most of the last set and costuming of this one. From Russia With Love (Frau Farbissina and the room service attack, with a shoe no less, in what may be the most subtle of the James Bond in-jokes) Goldfinger (Randmom Task, Allotta Fagina, the basic concept of Goldmember) Thunderball (The table sequence with the murder chairs) You Only Live Twice (Dr. Evil's look, and the chest hair) Live and Let Die (The Ill-tempered Sea Bass Tank) Moonraker (the entire end of The Spy Who Shagged Me, but a terrible movie) If you decide to do the Bond movies, Dr. no was first. On her Majesty's Secret Service needs to be seen before Diamonds are Forever, the Spy Who Loved Me, and For Your Eyes Only, but only for James Bond in-universe reasons. None of the pre-Craig have a watch order except the above. All of the Daniel Craig movies have an overall plot. Fembots probably came from TV show The Six-Million Dollar Man/ The Bionic Woman, but may have been out in some other form. These movies also borrow from Mission: Impossible (the original TV show) and Our Man Flint, and In Like Flint, which were sort to parodies of Bond Movies in their own right. You should also check out an episode or two of the TV show Laugh-in i you can find any. Miss Kensington is based on Mrs. Peel from a British TV show called The Avengers who was played by Diana Rigg, who you might know as the old head House Tyrell in Game of Thrones

"That was such a short movie..." kind of got me, because if I'm not mistaken movies generally used to be almost always 1,5 - 2 hours, all original star wars movies are almost exactly 2 hours if I remember correctly, newer ones are roughly 20-30 minutes longer. Nowadays movies are about 2,5h long or if it is a Nolan movie it is most likely 3 hours so they should have some bathroom brakes and you need to clear your calendar for the evening if you go to a cinema. Personally I liked the shorter movies because you didn't get fatigued by sitting so easily and the snacks would last better throughout the movie, although I see the value of longer movies in some cases, but I also feel that the more limited run time of shorter makes the pacing usually better because the story needs to be told in a shorter amount of time, which leaves unnecessary scenes usually on the cutting room floor.

I _think_ the idea is that Austin Powers is officially a super famous... _photographer._ Just like James Bond has a standing cover of a banker, but considering that bankers tend to not be, well, _famous_ it's not as big a deal that he often has a cover as something else. Depending on the place in the series his rank in the Royal Navy is either secret or public record, too, though I THINK that he's thought to be retired at least as far as public records go.

This movie is actually NOT the first time Mike Myers appeared as the Austin Powers character. He originated the role as part of a 60s-style tribute band called Ming Tea, which he formed in the early 90s with Bangles singer and guitarist Susanna Hoffs. He then decided to make a movie around the character. All of the interludes where the film cuts to Austin and a band playing were performed by Ming Tea, and the band did a number of performances as part of the marketing. Hoffs also provided the cover of "The Look Of Love" during the Alotta Fagina seduction scene. Tom Arnold is such a great character actor. No reaction to Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) as the support group leader?

Saw this as a kid and loved it. Something that I only found out recently is. Dr Evil and Austin Powers...same actor for both. That made the trilogy even better for me. (yes I know he was also Fat Bastard but I didn't care for that character)

90s were a great time honestly. I don't know what happened to people. I think the Internet ruined people, everyone is pessimistic, optimism is dead. You could argue people became radicalized through social media into clicks, and those clicks make people hate everyone not of that click. Basically stereotype of highschool but on steroids.

Austin Powers 1 and 2 are 2 of my favorite childhood movies :D Super quoteable (how the hell do I spell that word correct?), great characters, awesome jokes. They are just great comedy with Mike Myers at his peak.

Looks like you saw the edited version? In the original there are more scenes, (mainly regarding the personal lives of guard that gets flattened and the guard that gets eaten by the sea bass) whenever it's on TV it's mainly the edited version but it just feels incomplete after watching the full version

Nice "Doug Dimmadome" joke. "Let me tell you a little story about a man named SHH!" That whole segment was brilliant. If you had seen any of the James Bond movies (especially during the Sean Connery or Roger Moore eras), or the movie Our Man Flint, then the jokes would make a lot more sense.

So many references to classic James Bond films. Dr.Evil killing his own operative at the table with the push of a button is from Thunderball. Dr. Evil's look is based on Blofeld from You Only Live Twice. Random Task is based on Odd Job from Goldfinger. The cart Austin gets stuck is from Moonraker. Dr.Evil's radiation suit is from Dr.No. Other 60s spy films and TV shows are referenced. The distinct red phone ring is from Our Man Flint. The Fembots are from Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs. The machine gun bra is from The Tenth Victim. Mimi Rogers dresses like Emma Peel from The Avengers (no, not those Avengers). The song "The Look of Love" is from the 1967 version of Casino Royale.
