FILM DESCRIPTION:
Quentin Tarantino's sprawling homage to action films of both the East and the West reaches its conclusion in this continuation of 2003's ultra-violent Kill Bill Vol. 1. Having dispatched several of her arch-enemies in the first film, The Bride (Uma Thurman) continues in Kill Bill Vol. 2 on her deadly pursuit of her former partners in the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, who, in a furious assault, attempted to murder her and her unborn child on her wedding day. As The Bride faces off against allies-turned-nemeses Budd (Michael Madsen) and Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah), she flashes back to the day of her deadly wedding, and we learn of how she was recruited to join the DiVAS, her training under unforgiving martial arts master Pai Mei (Liu Chia-hui), and her relationship with Squad leader Bill (David Carradine), which changed from love to violent hatred. Originally planned as a single film, Kill Bill grew into an epic-scale two-part project totaling more than four hours in length; as with the first film, Kill Bill Vol. 2 includes appearances by genre-film icons Sonny Chiba, Michael Parks, Larry Bishop, and Sid Haig; Wu-Tang Clan producer and turntablist RZA and filmmaker and composer Robert Rodriguez both contributed to the musical score.

It's important to understand that the Bride eventually earned Pai Mei's respect. he taught her the 5 point palm exploding heart technique, something he taught no one else, even Bill

You have to keep in mind that Pai Mei is over 1000 years old in the film. He is supposed to be on a level soo deep that he stopped his aging. So he's lived soo long, everyone around him is like toddlers no matter how old they are. That's why he taught no one the move, because he couldn't trust anyone with it. The truth is, no matter how hard anyone tried, it would be impossible for them to live long enough to surpass him as a student. Remember, he could 3 inch punch through thick wood. He trained her for that, BUT she never actually could do it, the best she could do is weaken the wood over time to break through it. She may have earned his respect, but I think he also taught it to her because she was a woman and would always have limited capabilities compared to a larger stronger well trained opponent and would have needed it more. Of course he probably saw things in her that made him proud to have her as a student, like when she fought to eat that bowl of rice. Having lived for 1000 years, he probably had learned a lot about people, and knew what qualities he appreciated in people that were rare, but also knew that other people were not like him and didn't have as much life to hone their character, which is why he gave people chances to make the right choices. He asked her to show what she knew, but at the same time the point was to also show her that he was way beyond her in capability. When she threw that rock he was offended, but that also gave him a chance to show her how weak she was compared to him, and by her losing her pride and admitting it and asking for mercy, is all part of the training and showed him she was someone worth training.

I heard a theory that Pai Mei didn't actually teach her the 5 point technique. She didn't actually Kill Bill. First of all, Pai Mei teaches NO ONE that technique. Also, when Bill asks Beatrix if Pai Mei taught her the 5 point, she says yes, but shakes her head. That could be double meaning. The theory goes on that Beatrix didn't kill anyone anymore after Vernita because after seeing Nikki, her motherly instinct came back and she couldn't kill anymore. Whether she was going to kill Budd or just torture him, is unknown. But she definitely didn't kill Elle and now there is the question whether she actually killed Bill. Maybe Bill didn't die, but he understood Beatrix's point of view after they talked. So he willingly let her take their daughter, and let them both go. You can tell that Bill has no problem letting his assassins go because he does have a heart - he let Vernita go because she was pregnant. He let O'ren go, and also Budd. Perhaps he saw that Beatrix really would make a good mother and deserves B.B. more than him.

it's interesting how pai mei really just toyed with her until the moment she decided to go after him with the rock.. then he got really heavy-handed with her. it shows that even though he can kill in a second, he isn't evil and does what he does for a reason. that kind of dishonorable, underhanded attack by B was unacceptable and his response was measured against that. it also served to teach her humility and that arrogance makes you vulnerable

Part of the hilarity is that his style of Cantonese doesn't match the clothes that he wears and the Wuxia genre he represents.. usually you expect someone in Pai Mei's clothes to sound like a poet, like Yoda. but here he sounds like your beer-drinking uncle showing off.

interesting. I don't speak any chinese, but i remember being surprised by his gruff, whiny tone of voice, whereas the pai mei character in fist of white lotus or executioners from shaolin has this sort of ponderous, aristocratic way of talking

The real life Pai Mei was one of the 5 great Elders.The other 4 elders are: Shaolin Abbot Zhishan: a formidable ally and mentor to Fong SaI Yuk, Hong qiguan (inventor of Hung style fists) and Yan YongChun. He's also the abbot of Shaolin during the era of monk Sande (acted by GOrdon Liu at the 36 chambers of Shaolin) Nun Wu Mei: has discipled Yan Yongchun who invented Yongchun (wingchun) fighting style Miao Xian: (Fong sai yuk's maternal grandfather. Fong sai yuk was acted by Jet Li) Taoist Feng Daode: a good friend of Pak Mei.Donny Yen makes a badass Pai Mei at his prime. Since Jet Li acted before as Fong Sai Yuk. It will be awesome he played Miao Xian. Michelle Yeoh as Nun Wumei. But sadly...not even Hongkong itself had even filmed a movie about the 5 elders. Their disciples and grand disciples appeared more in movies.

as cruel and taunting as he is here, it seems like there's a definite purpose to everything he says and does.. and it's not just cruel for cruelty's sake. a lot of the verbal taunts are to kind of strip down the student's ego and teach them humility. the best teachers will show you how bad you are, because if you think you're good, you will never be truly great. i'd wager much of the stuff he says to her isn't even really what he thinks.. and notice he doesn't actually hurt her until she tries to do something shady and dishonorable(hit him with a rock).

Dog hah well stockholm is a bit different i would argue.. an abductor tends to want to totally break someone down in order to basically control them for themselves. i think with pai mei the idea is to break down the student so that you can then build them up and enable them to be truly great at their skills. also, i got the sense that beatrix could have left if she wanted to.. stockholm victims are at least initially kept against their will. but the idea is similar i think. i mean, for that matter, joining the army would be potentially considered a stockholm syndrom scenario as well.

In Chinese Kung fu, there is a technique that one could master in order to make one’s self lighter for faster movement. This is more of a testament to Pai Mei’s mastery of this technique than Beatrix’s strength.

Leonard F To be fair, they are in the assassination business. In that line of work, honor sometimes must give way to efficiency and effectiveness. Oftentimes the opposition would do the same to you given the opportunity. Elle Driver used the most efficient, expedient and effective means to achieve her objective. Was it a cowardly bitchy move? Yes. Did it get the job done? Most definitely. Call me pragmatic about honor and any kind of conflict.

A great Einstein quote comes to mind: "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know" She goes in confident in her skills to the point where she's borderline arrogant because against her standard opponents she's as strong as she believes she is then Pai Mei breaks her down and makes her realise that what she knows is barely scratching the surface and how far away she is from being able to declare herself as a master and it's at that point she can truly take the training and grow from it

He has his own movie before this. Much of the appearances of characters in these movies are representations of other martial arts and western movie archetypes. O-Ren is Lady Snowblood, The Bride a mix between Bruce Lee and Sarah Connor. Bill is pretty much an evil Caine from Kung Fu, So odds are Pai Mei may have a movie somewhere.

I love the aspect of, "see if you can land a blow on an unarmed man," followed up with (essentially), "ok then, tiger, let's see if you can beat this bird," lol That and he never really shuts her down, even when she has a sword in her hand (and yet shows he could have done so at any time), until she tries to sneak attack him with a rock

I agree. And this scene is remnant of older kung fu movies, where the choreography was much slower than in movies like The Matrix where everyone was a master and fought at light speed.

***** I definitely would....if I could have a more humane teacher. Imagine leaving after 5 yrs and feeling you could protect anyone! I bet it would be like being high all the time. To be a gentlemen and always relaxed because you know you have a special gift and the pride that goes with it. The trick would be to survive that harsh training! -)

Im my martial career, why is it the ones who join for other than fighting reasons often get the most total benefit out of class? Im actually preparing to start a blog on this topic. Maybe a book too. you could do a whole close reading of this scene's cinematography, the blending of western realist codes (washed-out colors, cinema verite low angle shots and handheld camera) with hong kong film devices (wide shots to show action sequences, synchronized diegetic camera movement, gratuitous use of zoom)
