@@Balinux Twice. He showed her that it could be done, and told her before she started that she just needed the strength and follow through to do so. It's similar to breaking wood in martial arts. When I learned how to do it my Sensei said that three things will keep you from breaking a board and two of them can be gained easily: Strength and power. You can lift weights and practice and gain the strength and power needed to break the board. The third one- Fearlessness is your biggest obstacle. It is the fear it may hurt, the fear you can't do it, the hesitation that comes in the breath when your hand will touch the board. You must not fear anything or the only thing you will break is your wrist. Know you have the power, trust in the strength you have accumulated over time and you will not fear and the board will break.

how the hell did you do that lol. every martial art make their student spend a good ammount of time making their bones more dense by hitting hard materials. you don't need to wack the target way too hard, it's something one achieves over time, as you cause microfractures to the bones, they get more dense and more resistant. you're probably not going to punch through a thick board of wood, but if you punch someone with bones less dense than yours, you will likely break them.

I don't care how strong you think you can make your fist. If you hit something or someone in the wrong spot with all your force, like the top of a person's head, and aren't intending to, you're going to drive your knuckle back into your hand. Even if you intend to hit a dense object with too much force, you can ruin your hands. This is make believe. A lot of boxers retire with ruined hands.

The Cruel Tutelage of Pai Mei is my favorite part of the Kill Bill saga. Pai Mei does not care what your story is or how hurt you are - his teaching will take you beyond that if you can hack it. Beatrice is headstrong, but learns to take Pai Mei's teaching to heart. It is all crazy over-the-top, but that is the nature of Kill Bill. It is an homage to many genres of Asian action film. But in the cruel tutelage part we see Beatrice becoming more than herself, growing in strength both physically, but more important, mentally. Sure, in earlier episodes she gets the Hattori Hanso sword, then slaughters the crazy 88, but that does not show us growth, just skill. The cruel tutelage scenes show us why she won in the end.

In fact, he already has his movie. Hong Kong martial arts movies have many similar white-browed characters. In killing Bill, white eyebrows have their own endings. The instructions he gives are not just cool-sounding, they're what you're supposed to do. In any martial art, you're told to hit through the thing you're hitting, not at it. This means you have to complete the motion of hitting once you've connected the hit, which means putting your whole body into it to use all that momentum. Hence why it's so impressive to do it at such a short range; With no momentum, you rely entirely on your muscles (and your control of em) to exert all the force you'd normally get from the momentum

He did smile as she was toughening up. In fact, that's a trope that's older than dirt in most of these period martial arts movies that came out of China, and a common theme in much of Asian media. Even the anime Dragon Ball used it. When Goku and Krillin were trained by Master Roshi, they were excited to learn his master techniques and moves, but they had to prove themselves first by doing the traditional carrying water up the mountain side, toughing up their punches, etc. When Master Roshi finally decided they were ready, he revealed that the "toughening up" was really the entire training. Pai Mei is literally training Beatrix to do the technique by toughening her up. Once she's strong enough, it's just a matter of showing her where the "points" are, and the rest is her own strength and agility. Even the line, "the wood should fear your fist!" is directly lifted from these sorts of films.

I love the camera angle showing through the hole he punched through it showing her standing there with that look on her face saying “Ok then, here I go. Let’s see if I can do that”. Love the subtleties in Tarantino films - most people probably think it's stupid that she is mixing English words in her Cantonese/Japanese/etc, it is so accurate though. I've been living in Bangkok for the past 6-7 years and most foreigners who aren't totally fluent in Thai (or simply acquire 'Thai style') for suuuuuure throw in occasional English words when speaking Thai to Thai people. And Thais do the exact same thing vice versa lol. It might sound weird or pointless to some, but you'd get it if you lived it. Way better than me speaking 100% Eng and them 100% Thai - u can bet ur ass that each of us will truly understand half of what we said to each other lol. Best option for smoothest convo. For me though, the appreciation and respect one receives from locals for simply taking initiative to learn and apply their language is most important and does indeed go a long way. Love the emphasis on all the little things in this guy's movies, man. Guy's smart as fuck.
