These guns are not destined for greatness, they've already achieved it. It's just a matter of what they do in their retirement years. The S&W Model 15 Combat Masterpiece and Model 19 Combat Magnum show the Smith and Wesson revolver craft at its best. Their smoothness is stunning, almost taking you off guard because you didn't know something this awesome could be made back in 1967. But they were...and earlier. Add in classic good looks, high reliability, benchrest accuracy, excellent sights, perfect triggers and balance and all the other stuff I talk about in the review and you too may become a Classic Smith convert...watch out. They still just hold six shots so you have to make them count and reload fast [shown]. Many do and did when these were carried in the holsters of both military and police. But in the realm of POUs, these are mostly collectible and enjoyment guns and they excel at that. Chamberings are .38 Spcl [15] and .357 Mag [19]. Resurrected of sorts was the S&W Classic Model 15 but was only available in small numbers it seems (which made me sad). That's too bad, these guns are just too good to be forgotten. Maybe this will help.//////////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 10 out of 10

My father was a young Marine in 1950 and upon being ordered to Korea, purchased a K38 SW Combat Masterpiece through the mail. It arrived at Tent Camp 1 at Camp Pendleton, CA but he failed to buy ammo stateside and couldn't find any in Korea. He managed to borrow three rounds from a helo pilot. He ended up at Chosin Reservoir with the rest of the First Marine Division with 150,000 Chinese Communist soldiers trying to exterminate them. My father, his revolver and his three bullets were a moderately famous chuckle in the battalion. While they were trapped at Chosin and things looked bleak, a gunnery sergeant told my father: "Johnson, don't forget to save one bullet for yourself, cuz you don't want to go to no Red Chinese prison camp." He sold it when I was born in 1954. Wish he hadn't.

My favorite carry gun when I started in law enforcement in the early 70s was a M15. We had to provide our own, and mine was a nickel plated M15 with target hammer, target trigger and the S&W 'coke bottle' grips. I paid $125 for it new. I didn't realize I was identified by it until I went to the bank one day while off duty (my usual OD gun was a Cobra variant of the Dick Special), and a boy in the bank (don't know who he was) with his mother asked me, "Where's your silver gun?". The look of it had apparently made quite an impression on that boy who appeared to be about 10 years old. I put a lot of wheel weights down that barrel on the practice range in the form of 158 gr SWC reloads. My carry load was the Super Vel 110 gr HP. Occasionally I carried a Python or a M10 HB, but the M15 was my favorite and the one I usually carried. Several years after leaving law enforcement, I was talked into selling it. I later regretted selling it and asked the buyer if he was willing to sell it back to me. Even more regrettably, it was not for sale. In this world of hi cap semi-autos, I would still bet my life on a Model 15.

I was issued a model 15 when I joined the police force. Used it throughout my training at the Academy. After my probation period, I bought a Smith and Wesson model 66 357 revolver.. Used it until we switched to autos like all the other police departments in America. I ever felt out gunned with either. Bought my Model 15 stamped with the department name on it when we switched to autos. Still have it. The 66 too. If the SHTF and was allowed one side arm, it would be the my Model 66 without any hesitation. I could hunt small game with wad cutters. Big game with 158 grain magnums. And defend myself and my loved ones with 125 grain magnums. It is the most versatile sidearm I know of.

Watch all your videos and yes, I have my original issued Model 15 from the police academy and carried for a few years on patrol until our department went the the Mod 25-5, 45 long colt. Mod 15 still operates and shoots the same as the day It was issued to me. When I retired my department let me keep my original issued Mod 15. Thanks for the memories...

I bought a S&W Model 19-3 back in October 2014 that was in near perfect condition for $700 CDN. I love this thing to death. Unless it was the apocalypse or WROL and neither my CZ-75 or Glock 22 were availible I would never do anything to abuse or harm my model 19. Thank you for this video Nitnfancy this really inspired me to go out and purchase the used Model 19 I had been eying up at my local gunshop/range; it is probably one of the best purchases I have ever made in my life.

Outstanding review. I'm 50 yrs old and my formative shooting years as a teenager and in to my mid 20's was with these guns. Along with Ruger blackhawks. Ive been a glockaholic for about 20 yrs now but i recently picked up a model 15 6in barrel in pristine condition for $400. Its the first wheel gun I've owned in 20 yrs. I really forgot how much fun these guns are. They remind me of a time when this was a better country.

Just before Christmas I picked up a model 15-3 at a local pawn shop. It's in mint shape, and dates to 1974. It's the most well made firearm I have ever seen much less owned. I was there picking up my AR lower, saw it in the case and had to have it. Sweet shooter!

I have a 19-7 and a 66-1 (stainless model 19). They will be in our family for many generations. I really like the stainless on the 66 for outdoor/mountain carry as I don't worry about the finish like I do on the 19. Trigger job on mine is outstanding and these K frame S&W's are just perfect staples for my corral. Thanks for the vid.

To me, there's still no nicer fish on a gun than a new glossy blueing from generations past. Certainly not he sturdiest, but hell if it ain't the purdiest. Color-case hardening on old single-actions too.

Very nice revolvers. I own the 15,19 & 27. I was In the Marine Corps and am a police officer. Your statement about police officers "sucking" at soothing is a broad statement . I highly disagree, you would have to do a video about combat stress with someone shooting back at you! Not just pumping holes in paper. Just like in the military not everyone is an expert shooter.

I am a big fan of S&W's. I own many revolvers, and my favourites are older P&R'd S&W's - a 28-2, 66 (no dash), 629 (no-dash). Absolutely beautiful guns. I own Rugers, Dan Wessons, new S&W's and even a Colt Python.....still the P&R'd S&W's are my favourite.

Great video!! I'm more than happy to see these classics reviewed by you, because one of the 2 handguns I'm licensed to own for target shooting (german gun laws ...) is just that S&W 15-3! :) It's from 62 and it's by far my absolute favourite gun! It's craftmanship, blueing, precision and reliability is second to none. I also use the original S&W grips (when I want the "looks") and the Hogue Monogrip for competition (sure grip and good clearance for speedloaders). And you're absolutely spot on with your review!! Thumbs up! It's really like they say: "They just don't make 'em like this anymore" ;)

I have been gunowner since -96. I have always wanted a revolver, but until this spring, it just wasn't right moment for it. I applied permit, because I was offered S&W m28. When I got chance to try it at range, I just didn't get "I want" feeling. Next week my friend called, he had seen m19-3 almost new condition for 300€. My memories from old gun magazines came back like a lightning and I told him to reserve it. I went to get it same day. Model 19-3 made in -76, 4" barrel, love at first sight :)

Nutn, Great review of some cool classics. Your comment on LE pistol shooting is an interesting one. I run a USPSA club and we had some guys come from the local LE academy to shoot with us. Said our matches were more shooting and more challenge than they had in training. The ones who shot with us quickly moved to the top of their class in shooting.

All I can say is... It's about time :). Love my 19-2! I still carry it in a Safety Speed basket weave holster. With the 4" barrell and Pachmayr grip, it's plenty concealable for some carry scenarios, speedloader capable and it's so easy to place 6 shots well that I never feel under-armed. Thanks for the showcase for these great guns, Nutn :)

As for my 66, it's one of my go to guns for range time, and I wouldn't feel undergunned at all with it in a defensive situation. 6 rounds of full house .357 would mess up any bad-guys day!

Big giant thumbs up on this video - currently I own the following SW wheel guns - 29-3; 686; 36 - about 25 years ago I had a model 15 - circumstances back in the day forced me to sell that gun and I still want it back. Lets face it; personal pride, workmanship, quality conscious manufacturing long ago gave way to mass production for the lowest possible cost in order to enhance the bottom line for the short term. Those guns represent a time in manufacturing when pride in workmanship and durability and reliability, aesthetic beauty, were concepts that guided and motivated those operations. Good video.

The handgun problem at the infamous Miami FBI shoot out was not "firepower". It was the total-failure-to-stop of the 9mm ammo issued to the agents. The bad guys had a Ruger Mini 14 against agents armed with handguns and shotguns putting the agents at an initial disadvantage. The bad guys were hit 15 times by 9mm JHP's and buckshot pellets and remained on their feet fighting. The two agents killed (Dove & Grogan) both were armed with the S&W 459 9mm. Agent Mireles' left forearm was shattered by the Mini 14, but he ended the fight with 6 rounds fired from his personally owned S&W 686 357 Mag, firing Winchester 38 Spl +P 158gr LSWC-HP's, 3 rounds striking the car body cover of the bad guys, the other 3 rounds striking the bad guys, dropping them almost instantly. The 158gr LSWC-HP 38's worked perfectly, while the 9mm's loaded with very fragile JHP's failed totally. Modern 9mm JHP's likely would have done the job, but the 9mm JHP's used in 1986 were loaded according to the new "energy dump theory", (EDT is now totally discredited), and that is why the 1986 9mm JHP's totally-failed-to-stop. The 1986 shootout prompted the FBI to drop the 9mm and eventually settle on the .40 S&W auto.
@63DW89A
@63DW89A 9 лет назад
+Frank Harper Agree that bullet placement was key, (as always!) in the 1986 incident. However, the 38 LSWC-HP did perform where the 9mm 115gr Silvertip ammo totally failed due to being constructed on the flawed "energy dump" theory that was developed during the Dept of Justice tests that resulted in the Relative Incapacitation Index of the 1970's. The "handguns do not perform well against rifles" is a modern concept built around the fact that auto pistols tend to fire weak-for-caliber cartridges out of a delayed blowback action that has inherent accuracy problems. In the 1850's Colt Dragoon C&B revolvers could fire half-ounce (220gr) conical bullets at 1000+fps and easily kill horses at 100yds with precision accuracy. The specifications for the 45 Colt cartridge in 1873 directly descended from the Colt Dragoon: 40 grain black powder charge driving a 255gr bullet at 1000fps. The Cap and Ball 44 Army revolvers and the Colt Single Action cartridge revolver all had long 7.5 or 8 inch barrels because those handguns were considered offensive weapons, and not close range defensive weapons as modern auto pistols are considered.
@paradox7xx
@paradox7xx 11 лет назад
Seeing all of the targets for accuracy is great, knowing what loads worked for your rifles is an interesting and valuable data point for both the weapon and ammunition. Those that don't like it can just skip it easily enough but I imagine this crowd loves every second.

Got a S&W Model 10 from my grandpa a couple of months ago, he bought it in the late 40's or early 50's, it was made before they put the model numbers on the gun. It stayed in his night stand ready to protect my Dad and the rest of his family. I keep it oiled and put away, but that's the most accurate pistol I have, even more so than my trusty carry gun, my XDM 3.8c .45. S&W makes the best revolvers out there in my opinion!!!

Nut n, I cannot agree with you more, there is NO comparison concerning production standards from "Back in the Day" and now, so much has been taken out of the craftsman's hands. My first revolver, a Colt Trooper Mk III/6" in 1981 just super. After that I carried a NAD Crane refurbished S & W 15/4" for a couple years. Then in 84' I got my own 8 ⅜" Model 29, ok,ok I know it's a little bigger all around than the 15 & 19 but what I'm really getting at is the QUALITY of all of them was amazing. I did own a 629/6" for a while but always harkened for the longer barreled 29. The blueing, the cylinder gaps, all of it. This class of gun can just be admired for it's quality, but, they all really shine on the range. Great review!

Beautiful. Mid, to late 80's I ran into some financial difficulty and had to sell most my high end handguns. S&W Model 29, 8 3/8, Colt 6" Python, 6" Diamondback and even my Gold Cup. All were beautifully blued. That was a big bump in the road in my life. But life is good now. :)

Ah damn this video! I have an option on a 3" Model 13 and I've been trying to resist. This isn't going to help.

I share your love of these guns. I bought a 2003 629 with the lawyer lock. I was satisfied with it. then I bought a 19-2. wow never looked back. sold the newer 629-1. I have 7 S&W revolvers now. the newest on is from 1981. buy the older ones. they are way higher quality.

Good video. Need more about wheel guns in modern use to show they are as good as everything else. I love my model 14.

Taught my wife how to shoot with these K frames. Started with Model 17 and 18 in .22LR which are incredible as well. Moved her to .38 Special in K frames. Great home defense guns for spouse who rarely shoots. Simple and common sense. Only a few issues with previous owners monkeying with triggers and such. Be patient and find great examples. Mastering that DA trigger lets you shoot any gun IMHO. Unfortunately sold them all off...

The S&W Mod. 15 was my assigned duty gun with Florida DoC in the late 90's. Interestingly enough, our practice ammo was 130 grn FMJ head stamped WCC 88 and in .50 cal ammo cans with USAF stenciling. Hmmm....

I have shot 6 shot groups with my S&W 686 with a 6 inch barrel from 25 yards (rested) in a 1/2 inch group. The gun shoots better than I could ever do.

just picked up a model 27-2 6 inch barrel excellent condition. I love it currently eyeballing a model 28 because it's sitting there for a good price

I don't have any of these guns but I do own a Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 in blued finish and a Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 in nickeled finish, both of which have 6 to 6 1/2 inch barrels. I love both of them.

Review the model 66! The classic combat .357. I loved my snub and 4 inch versions. Great gun.
