@CanYouRollaCrit they can encourage all they want but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Promised of continued support ring hollow when in mainline 40k it took six months for them to issue even a points change to Admech
Just wanna say, I have really come to appreciate your videos! They’re to the point, informative and insightful. Your love for the game shines through and it’s infectious, keep it up 🧡
A finite list of “legal” teams is, for a number of reasons, is pretty mandatory for a balanced, high level, competitive environment. And, it’s good that GW had very clearly defined when (six years out) when certain teams drop out of sanctioned play. There should be no more “I just bought Kill Team ‘X’ last month, and now they’re dropped!”, posts.
Often regular Space Marines are refered as Angels of Death so that's cool to have a regular Marines around. That 3 years life span of a KT is a bit odd decision to me, I mean, KTs are representing something unique from lore perspective - be it Novitiates, Scouts as an entry/training points for proving your worth or Kasrkin, Phobos, Kommandos as a highly specialised units, doing covert ops stuff. So unless they'll change the lore, it won't make sense to get rid of them, unless it's updating the model range/weapon options for those teams. But that's just my opinion.
@@Steve_Keen Well, yes and no. They might add some stuff, like jump infantry or some other "regular" Primaris Infantry - like someone with plasma weapon or flamethrower... Plus they might come up with Sternguard KT - now that would be cool. So I think it's an open case till the point of releasing rules for that KT.
Sorry!? What's*_Angels of Death_* !? You read it like it was no surprise. (So maybe the new name for Intercession Squad and/or Justian!! Did we already know that?)
They had pictures of a couple of new space marine models in one of the recent articles (picture with several Aquilons, all surrounded by Tyranids). One holding two pistols and a Tacticus armor trooper with a Phobo-style cloak. I wonder if there'll be an updated version of Intercession getting released soon?
I paint a newly released them every year and many of you do as well. 4 years is a long time to be "tournament legal" and frankly, very few of us actually play competitively. Teams and editions live forever. This is all perfectly reasonable.
I was very pleased to see how, well, considerate they've been with this. Yes, it's planned obsolescence, as written in another comment, but it's not nearly as bad as might have been. Now if someone would please tell us more details about "Angels of Death", that would be great. It could be anything from a new name for Intercession Squad, to a catch-all for all kinds of Primaris teams...
The only thing that annoys me is that this means if you have a team you genuinely love and want to run at tournaments, this means there's a life span to that team. (Or at places that will only run classified events). I'm a huge krieg fan, and I'm glad that I'm currently working to make custom Grenadiers in place of the Kasrkin team, but now that means I have 1 year left on those Vet Guard, and 2 years at best on the Kasrkin, which bums me out. I know the teams will still be around for like FLGS play, which is sweet, but it also means that if my play group switch to classified play only, then I can kiss those teams goodbye. Fine because I'm making a full krieg 40k army, not fine for KT where I'm currently custom kit-bashing them and everything.
Think of it as of hobbying opportunity! I personally play only greenskins and when I got slightly bored of kommandos I converted hearthkyns to grots. Right now I’m in a process of finishing my proper elite ork team. Your favourite army is only available, just hidden within another roster (:
TBH, that’s more than I honestly expected. Being able to use the same team for 6 years if a pretty solid ROI. Even if you just look at the 4 years of being tournament legal is better than I’d hoped for. The rebranding of a couple of teams - Vet Guard to Death Korps & Intercession to Angels of Death - is interesting. Makes me wonder if they did that to reduce confusion with upcoming releases. I’ve seen a lot of back & forth on the Classified/non-Classified thing. TBH, unless you’re playing with friends or in a local club, the odds of folks playing a non-Classified team at a tournament (official or unofficial) are pretty low imho. I’m happy to be wrong, but a lot of folks use tournament legality as a guideline for their play, which is why a unit being sent to Legends in 40K is basically a death sentence for those minis.
I do appreciate the heads up on when certain boxes will leave the range. Beats the previous we won't update Compendium for 2 years and hope they get the hint. Whether something is strong or not isn't really a problem for me, narrative makes everything ridiculous after a campaign or 2. However I can't play if I don't have the miniatures to play with, a year is enough to get any of the teams I want before the box goes away. Hope the other GW games adopt the same principle, mainly 40k, stuff be disappearing of the shop with no rhime or reason until a month after the fact.
@@CanYouRollaCrit In theory at least, but there's a few clashes. Pathfinders for example have a basic 40k box already. If that gets replaced with the KT pathfinders kit then cool, but if not that's real lousy. Then there's other units like blooded and voidscarred, no-one is fielding them in 40k so it's doubtful they'll see much life afterwards.
This reminds me of Magic the Gathering and the rotation of cards they go through with their various formats. As a game publisher, it makes it easier to balance the competitive meta, and keeps it fresh. New teams enter and older teams leave. As a shopkeeper, KT is easier to keep on the shelves. I am bummed the Compendium teams will not be supported in KT 24, but I bet it won't be hard to home brew rules for them.
Still think this is dumb. If you already made the kill teams and already made their rules there is no reason to just not keep them as playable kill teams.
Each time you add or change rules, you have to rebalance all of the teams. You can still play them in non-classified games, I guess, although if they don't have an update for a current rule set, I guess its up to someone to make up the new rules for them.
@@ChaseTheChamp11 (hard to predict where things will be for the 2027 edition), but for now, I expect once dropped as *kill teams* , boxes will lose their upgrade-style sprues 🙁 . (But most truly new teams' sprues are inseparable, so maybe those will actually stick around longer?)
While I understand why they feel the need to rotate killteams out this way, I don't think it's a good idea, nor do I like it. It's basically planned obsolescence, and it probably won't feel good for new or older players knowing that your favorite team has a shelf life of less than half a decade, or a little more than that if you don't care about them being competitive. It might stunt the growth of future editions as older players fall away after their killteams are sunset, and newer players might be wary of investing into it, especially since it sounds like unclassified teams probably won't get rules at all in later editions.
@CanYouRollaCrit That's not exactly a long time. Imagine if 40k or AoS threw stuff out after only two editions. A lot of people would be very upset. I know people who haven't even finished painting their killteams yet, and they're going to be rotated out in a year now. Even if you're right, the mere threat of something you invest your time, money, and energy into becoming obsolete within the foreseeable future will probably be very off-putting to a lot of people. Edit: it's also very funny to me that these Killteams will survive for longer in 40k than they will in the system they were created primarily for.
For me this is the heart of it. Talons and Hive Fleet (real Tyranids) are teams I've had the most fun with throughout KT21. No news about when we could expect replacements, or even teams for Death Guard, etc. So fine if you've already got a bespoke KT, but not so much if you were still playing from the Compendium.
Planned obsolescence is much better than unplanned obsolescence. I can feel my stress levels going down, already. ...and I might be able to get some cheap Kommandos for Boarding Actions!
Maybe killteam should have a non GW rules committee run by the community itself. To keep the non classified teams relevant for non-classfied teams. The whole community seems to have very competent and level headed members. Magic the gathering has the EdH rules committee who dictates what stuff is banned and adjusts the rules. Just a thought. 🤔
I think they're also talking about cycling the boxes out of production too, since from a business and manufacturing stand point it doesn't make sense to keep the whole range in production. Especially if they keep producing new boxes. Already they've got 33 different boxes and some of them haven't been in stock in ages.
@@CanYouRollaCrit they could, but that would entail making new rules for older teams that are no longer on sale, tournament legal or even playable casually...
While warning for this rotation has been reasonable. This may a number of kill team players from investing jn more teams. With this change though it does seem like we have a chance at getting a set more elite (ie terminators, grey knights, custodes) kill teams and more model refreshes.
Maybe cynical but from what i can read i think some teams will get the short end of the stick. For example only getting 2 editions would put the nemisis claw at only 4 years of supported rules (2021 ed plus 2024 ed). Also assuming gellerpox leaves at the end of this season, they will only have had 3 years and a couple months of classified status. When picking up a team at first release i think thats a decent timeline, but i would be hesitant to recommend a team more than 12 months old to a new player for example.
Thinking logically... If kasrkin are updated for 6 years... Sounds like a long time to get the optimization correct. So... Provided GW won't make things too overwhelmingly OP (and nerf as needed within a span of 4years)... All should be gucci for non classified :D... Logically speaking
But what if i want to run my team of grey knights or custodes? Do i have to wait till they release a new kill team of them or are they still playable/compatible with the new edition?
Its a shitty decision because if you're stuck with a bunch of fomo obsessed metachasers, than they will either drop the game or refuse to play a legends game because they suck off the balance team.
Interesting. No, Intercession Squad? Seems odd to me... Will wait and see what the story is there. Also, not gung ho on the change from "Veteran Guardsmen" to "Death Korps" -- I hope the idea that there are plenty of other valid IG teams to use those rules is still generally accepted in the local gaming community (and I am going to probably invest in a set of Phil Gunner's base labels to make it more explicit...)
I am more concerned with using/converting my old OOP 40K models (like my old Colonel Schaefer's Last Chancers) as acceptable proxies in game play. This is my whole reason for playing KT. Not buying new kit. 😉
Hello John. Could you find out and clarify if the teams will be gone simualtaneously , or phased out one by one depending on their original release date. Also do you know if the terrain sets will be phased out as well? (since they are/will also be out of print eventually this would make sense to me.
What about rotation after 4 years? Will they rotate out 4 years after original release or is it it more about when GW decides to rotate them out? Gellerpox infected,Novitiates and Ork Kommandos were Not released at the same time but they are scheduled to rotate out together apparently.
Ok so BRAND NEW to KT, just split the starter box with my bro, but did alot of research before taking the plunge.... Is this maybe a way for them to (down the road) cut kill teams that they dont want to mess with anymore? A completely different thought: is this a business decision maybe? Are the vast majority of palyers getting one or two teams and just stopping? I was looking into Malifaux before deciding on KT, and a very notable difference there is you could customize your squad beyond your starter box. So you had a completely playable, unique team out of gate, but they would release other minis under the same faction that could swapped in. I was a little surprised KT does NO new releases for each team, maybe its hurting them financially?
The only difference between this and the actual rumors is that legend’d (non-classified) teams will still get balance updates for what, another 2years? Honestly the whole seasons/editions/etc in calendar equivalent is confusing me a little
Can you explain to me if I get it right? On an example Kommandos are going to be updated till the end of this edition (so more or less for 3 years) of KT and Nemesis Claw till the end of the next edition (more or less 6 years)? Ngl but I'm lost with their naming of edition. Do they mean the new edition or only 1 year?
@@CanYouRollaCrit I think your confusing "Season" (a year) and edition? So Kommandos will be "classified" for 4 years from release, ending classified status around summer 2025, while Nemesis Claw which came out spring 2024 will be "classified" until around summer 2026, being valid for only 2 1/2 years?
I dont like this one bit because my two factions arent wildly popular. One is unplayable once 3 drops because it only had a compendium. My Hunter Clade is going out og classification at year 1 and from there continued support is likely meaning it will be kept legal for play. After that? Who knows. Admech has no big fans in Nottingham so a release for us is likely very low priority. Who knows how long itd be until I have a team again acutally supported and not merely on life support
While on one hand it's easy to be cynical and negative about rules rotations and the sunsetting of plastic soldiers (what's the long term future for those?), I'll admit it's better for the game's longevity.
The tantrums being thrown are insane. They are phasing away teams that even if you bought enough kits for every possible build option cost what 150$? not entire 2000$ armies. They are giving a helluva headsup, they are leaving all options open. They are communicating. The game has to change and evolve to stay alive. Otherwise its another Warmachine, Hordes, Xwing, Star wars legion, Armada...............
@@capnbrunch9612 it's still an investment being rendered worthless eventually for a lot of players. Also not that much of a heads up for the 1st wave teams. The game can still change and evolve without binning teams so early. Also all of those games died out due to varying reasons lol. Fuck, warmahordes was killed by it's rampart toxicity, and then all the toxic players throwing actual tantrums because they had to learn new strategies with a new edition.
@@capnbrunch9612 three years isn't that long, and it's still pretty crap. 6 would be fine now that we know. Rotation works for stuff like MTG because the core rules haven't changed enough to invalidate old sets. If fourth edition doesn't change enough to invalidate old teams that's fine, but there's no guarantee for that huh.
So all kill teams have a pseudo expiry date now. Restrictions on teams for tournaments makes sense as it means less to balance to a specific degree, but the rest is a bit ick. A "manageable" range is a bit of a crock if they're just trying to push people into buying stuff nonstop. Feels like a crappy copy of MTG's rotations. I wonder if by fifth edition we'll see a legacy format for kill team 🤣 At least it's still a better game than 40k, sigmar, warcry, and HH.
They've created a bit of a problem for themselves by releasing so many new kill teams each year. But I suppose that's their core business. I'll be playing solo & co-op as much as PvP, so to my mind I can keep playing Kill Team 3rd edition rules solo & co-op for decades if I and my friends want. So, to some extent, these Kill Teams have as long of a lifespan as we want.
@@fatal-flaw10 The article says they'll be downloadable from Warhammer Community, so I'm guessing that means PDF docs like the rest of their downloads?
