My vote is for lumping in various genres into one video. While I enjoy genre specific ones, I think this limits your viewership in that genres others aren’t into or familiar with may just skip watching. At least with a mixed bag there’s something for everyone, an unexplored genre may pique a person’s interest, and you get to flex your diverse (and excellent) tastes. I’m excited you have Black Randy & The Metrosquad and 100 Flowers added to your collection; the former may take a few listens to really appreciate how awesome the album is as a whole. Crass? Love them! They’re a good intro into early Anarcho-Punk. My favorite song sung by Eve Libertine is ‘Shaved Women’ off of “Stations Of The Crass”. All in all, excellent additions I’m stoked to see you have acquired. Must thanks and love to those sending you those wonderful gifts. P.S. There is only one band I’ve been exposed to (and LOVE) that has been unabashedly influenced by Minutemen (also by Wire, Gang Of Four and The Jam) and that is Giant Haystacks. You should check them out. They’re somewhat obscure enough to find their LPs on the cheap, but I noticed that’s changing slightly due to the success of members latest band Neutrals. Still, it’s not going to break the bank account.
@TheOmahaIntrovert
@TheOmahaIntrovert Год назад
Greetings! Thanks for sharing your vote. It helps me out. Yeah, seems the general consensus is that you all want to see a mix of different albums/music styles combined in one video, which is totally fine! Crass may not be for everyone, but I find them irresistible in a way! Eve Libertine is so very cool! I have not heard of Giant Haystacks, so I'm quite curious to give them a listen! Thank you for the recommendation! Happy holidays!

Your love of music is no 'hobby' - it is a way of life! Music is everything. I think the second Television album gets overlooked simply because of how devastatingly great their debut is. There's a great song by Crass called "Big A Little A" but I'm not sure if it's on that album (I have it on a compilation). Glad to see you getting into that DK's album. Hey Hanna, I really like the way you open up with genres I've never explored myself. I tend to dismiss things very quickly without giving them a chance, and hearing your enthusiasm encourages me to be less grumpy and be open to more listening pleasure. So I hope you keep doing general-type videos. But I'm sure you'll continue to do more specialised videos, which I look forward to. Your enthusiasm and good taste are infectious and surprising. Greetings Hanna. I'm glad there's not dried blood on your Screamers vinyl. Punk is not my absolute favorite genre but you did feature some of my absolute favorites. Double Nickles on the Dime a long time favorite and an absolute classic. I'm sure you are aware of the formation of Firehose after the passing of D Boone. Favorite albums are Ragin' Full On and If'n. Penis Envy also my favorite from Crass. They have expanded cd versions of all their releases called "The Crassical Collection". Very cool releases and all contain spacious booklets. Adventure is on my Holiday buy list and I concur it is highly underrated. As far as your video formats, I always like the grab bag episodes of a diverse range of albums. I just enjoy the element of surprise. But I also love the specific genre videos.. Hope that helps a little. Regardless, I'll continue to watch them as long as you make them. Hope you find some more music time and some balance. Take care and thanks!.

As far as TSOL goes- there are a couple of other albums and eps worth checking out. There was a self-titled EP that came out before 'Dance with Me' and it is worth getting for sure. It's more straight ahead hardcore with a little bit less of the goth vibes. The 'Weathered Statues' ep came out after Dance with Me and it's very experimental and interesting especially the track, 'Thoughts of Yesterday.' Then, they got a keyboard player and put out a post punky album called 'Beneath the Shadows' also worth checking out. After that, Jack and the drummer left the band and they took a decided turn for the worse, although the album 'Change Today?' has some interesting moments like the track, 'Flowers by the Door.' That maybe more than you ever wanted to know about them. Haha

Titles rise, titles fall, some make repeat appearances, and for a variety of reasons a few once fallen will forever struggle to regain "status". Punk and hXc are my most favorite genres. It’s mostly what I discuss on my channel. 1990s gangsta rap/hip hop too. I am so happy to see someone getting into it and enjoying classic records for the first time. Jack Grisham is a genius. I’m hoping to see TSOL next year. New York Hardcore (NYHC) is its own animal. Agnostic Front, Sick Of It All, Cro-Mags, and many others. Very raw but they all respect the roots of punk rock. I love your channel. I learn about new music by watching you and others in the vinyl community. I deeply regret being so limited in the 90s. I missed out on a lot.

I remember seeing VOM (angry Samoans) at a gig in a small club in Hollywood. For some reason the guy doing the soundboard became offended and told the lead vocalist R. Meltzer, to mellow out. Everyone in the audience was in shock because VOM was anything but mellow. They continued their regular show and the guy pulled the plug and they had no more sound. The gig ended. If VOM/SAMOANS ever needed validation of their punk persona that was it. BTW, I think Metal Mike Saunders (who drummed with a towel over his head) wrote Get off the air" because he couldn't stand Rodney B who had a show on KROQ FM.

Another nice selection! Screamers were a big part of the OG LA punk scene and had roots in the SF underground theater scene, Tomata Du Plenty being a member of The Cockettes in the late 60's. That TSOL album is amazing and considered one of the first Deathrock contributions. I highly recommend Change Today from the Joe Wood era, really cool dark stuff like "Black Magic" and "Flowers by the Door". Another funny story, Gary, my first record store boss back in the 90's, told me about his time living in LA as a rock writer and for awhile he was roomates with Metal Mike from The Angry Samoans and Mike would rehearse their songs alone incessantly while woodshedding! Gary would hear stuff like My old Man's a Fatso which is about a minute thirty sec long for 2 hours! Metal Mike is also named "Metal" Mike as he's sited for coining the term Heavy Metal, I met him a few years ago when I was working at Rasputins in Berkeley and he told me about the influence of the band name which was based on some old professional wrestling team. Funny stuff, great band.

That Black Flag ''Damaged' album you have (their best IMHO) is one of my absolute favorite punk albums. It is very aggressive but just classic. It reminds me of that time of absolute rebellion against the system. My top favorite punk album from that era is Circle Jerks 'Group Sex'. The songs are really short, but to me, it is the definition of punk. Another one of my favorites are Surf Punks 'My Beach' (their best one). Change Today was with new vocalist which on its own is a great record to this today. You can ignore all the material from 1986 - 1990’s. It was shit and ended with no original members. The original TSOL legally got their name back and started releasing new material and touring again in 2000 or so. They still put on a great show. The guitarist Ron Emory has been living in Sioux City now for a number of years and runs the music conservatory there with his wife. TSOL plays shows in Sioux City a couple times a year usually for a fundraiser for the school. Have you heard The Ex? They are a Dutch punk/post-punk group that formed in the late 70s and still make records and play shows to this day. Their music is very rhythmic, has slashing sometimes dissonant guitar sounds, and hyper-focused socio-political lyrical content. They also make records with African influences, including records with Getatchew Mekuria on sax. Those albums are killer. There's a lot to explore. Not quite the volume of, say, The Fall but close. Also, there's a 3-cd compilation of The Homosexuals' music called "Astral Glamour" that has all the material on the cd you showed, plus material from all the bands these same people morphed into while still in their primary group. Great stuff. It was released by Messthetics, who also has an incredible series of very obscure post-punk comps that are grouped by location for each release. HIGHLY recommend those. Last thing, that label took its name from an early Scritti Politti song. You've showed a couple of the albums they made after going full-on pop, but there's a Rough Trade comp of theirs called "Early" that is some of the most inventive, but still catchy, post-punk you will ever hear. The songs never go in expected directions at any point. It's awesome. Thanks for the video!!!

Hi. I like all your videos. Nice to have female voice in Vinyl Community. One of the finnish punk bands i liked in 70´s write a song to praise The Adverts & Gaye Advert. So off course I listen the Adverts and liked them. I never have the album, but i hope i see the re-issue in the record shop one day. I also checked the firm you mentioned, but the shipping coast is too much for one album. Funny thing about Gary Gilmoure Eyes is that we thought it was about Pink Floyd guitar player.🤣(Prog was those times not the music to listen) I saw Stiff Little Fingers here in 1979 in festival, but dont remember much about that gig. I found out that they are coming back to Finland next year. Let see if I have better luck this time. I also like that Dead Kennedy album. They also have a concert here, but i was too tired or something else stupid and did not go. I have regret it every time now when that band name is mentioned. What is worst is that they have that concert in your tube and you can see all that you missed. Have you listen Nina Hagen? Nina Hagen band and Unbehagen are worth of listen from punk era.

Hey there! Thanks for commenting! I have nothing by Nina Hagen yet! Hard to find her stuff around here, but I'm on the lookout! Glad you love the Adverts, too! Yeah, these reissues may be a bit tough to get in the states. The reissue of Crossing the Red Seas wasn't that cheap. And I had to buy Cast of Thousands from Juno Records, a UK vendor. Oh, that's amazing that you saw SLF in '79! What a time to have seen them! Cheers!

Love Double Nickels. My first minutemen tape was the 62 song My First Bells comp. All their 80-83 stuff. Really awesome. Most of that material is most accessible on the post mersh comps these days.

For me Hanna I just like good music. I really don’t get into the sub genres much. I basically am a hard rock and classic rock listener, but I can get into punk a bit if it is good quality. Like you my favorite group is The Who. And if you can’t see a little punk in their sound then you are not paying attention.!!! So keep it all bunched up and mixed up when you do videos…I can sort out what I like… When I watch your videos that like is about 80% !!! I listened to Minutemen at work….sounds a lot like Frank Zappa…but entertaining with great guitar !!! Black Flag is a little too hardcore for my tastes…Richard Hell I like too !! Adverts Crossing Red Sea sounds interesting…I get a good vibe from them Marquee Moon is a masterpiece!!! And like I said I just liked 80% !!! Ha ha !!! Thanks Hanna…..Don’t Work so hard…Take it easy !!!😊

Greetings, Richard! High five that you are a fellow mega Who fan! Yes! And next time I feature vinyl I've picked up, I will mix it up. I appreciate your input! And yes, for straight-forward punk and not hardcore punk, you would really enjoy the Adverts! Cheers, my friend! Happy holidays!

It's fun to see the comments from your viewer's in the UK. I knew this girl that saw alot of those bands there in 1977. She said it was fun, and nobody thought it would last a few years. Some of the best rock music in the US is similar. The Modern Lovers, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, The New York Dolls, Many others. All from the garage. Hello Garage Bands. Hello!

Thanks for stopping by, Donald! Oh yeah, I get quite a few comments from viewers in the UK, which is fun! If only I had been around in the late 70s to see these bands in live action! Cheers!
