LABRATSFAN2016 I don't really hate zoos for the most part, just circuses and marine parks like Seaworld mostly because they put animals through suffering unnecessarily.
+ozzy do I'm sure killer whales are way more aware of dangerous human things than the other "slower" whale species. Even with out ever seeing a propeller before, I'm sure they can connect the dots.
blacksoulman that is an idiotic comment. you clearly have not spent time out on the ocean.. the amount of animals you see damaged by propellers is RIDICULOUS> you're an idiot.
This is one of the main reasons they are the APEX predators of the sea with the main reason being their intelligence. Their speed and stamina can’t be matched by most of their prey and other predators. It’s incredible how they will chase a whale (like a pack of wolves) for that same amount of time and for miles, til the whale fatigues.
well, orcas belong to the Delphinidae family just like some dolphins, in fact the Delphinidae family is also called the oceanic dolphin family and the killer whale it's his largest member. So yes, it was a serious and correct comment.
My research tells me that killer wales are not wales but the largest of the dolphin family. Very smart and Apex predators, meaning they have no predators after them, they are at the top of the food chain in the sea.
Killer Whales are closely related to dolphins, and both are highly intelligent marine mammals who know exactly what humans are. There are no cases of humans being attacked by Killer Whales in the wild. What you see here in this video are Killer Whales doing the same thing that dolphins do whenever humans in boats are nearby, they swim alongside the boats and breach playfully.
***** No, humans are never on the menu with Orcas. Like dolphins, Orcas are highly intelligent and well aware of what humans are. They have a natural curiosity about humans whenever we enter the water because like us, they are mammals with very large brains. It's ironic that you mentioned the Orca would make Jaws its bitch, because Orcas have been known to attack and kill Great White Sharks, but they are no threat to humans.
TheOrmsson Yes, that's kind of what I meant when I said they are "related" to dolphins. Both Killer Whales and dolphins belong to the oceanic dolphin family.
I bet if you threw someone into the sea with 10 orcas and left them there floating on the surface it would take about 30 mins or so before they start smashing the human out the water like a seal playing "games" with you...I'm pretty certain we are not on the food chain , but if left with them for so long out in the wild they would kill you. I don't dislike orcas but they have always scared me more than what a shark has. very (happy/agressive) animals. weird mix of friendly but incredibly brutal killers, they play with their food too by slapping seals around into the air breaking their bones to dust before they tare them apart. so if I was given the choice to be thrown to sharks or orcas I would pretty much cut my loses and hop into the sharks, I think I'd have a better chance of swimming away and not being playfully followed by a pod of orcas while you totally shit yourself. at least with sharks they decide weather they are gona eat you or leave you within a minute or 2.
Davie otops Nope, if you threw someone into the sea with 10 Orcas, the Orcas would more than likely not bother the person, or they'd perhaps approach them with curiosity, but no differently than dolphins. There is a video of a dog that was swimming along a beach near feeding Orcas, and one of them approached the dog and pushed the dog to shore in order to make sure the dog was safely out of the way. The only reason that Orcas do what they do with seals is because seals are on the menu; humans and dogs are not.
THAT is where they should be, not in some tank put on display so fat tourists can take pictures. Set them free and let them be. If you want to study them - go out where they normally live.
Bruce Banner You know that there have been almost no agressive swings by killer whales to humans in the wild but in captivity a number of people have been killed
Ive seen Orcas chase and kill baby sperm whales, something tells me this was more of a "training" for the Orcas than having fun. These creatures are very smart and learn new habits quickly. they could have been testing new chasing methods.
How beautiful, it's as if these glorious creatures knew you love ocean life and are thanking you. So lovely to see them in their natural home instead of in captivity in places like seaworld where they have awful lives. Thanks for sharing!
yes but it has to do with nature so they are just labeled killer whales, who would want a name like cannibal whales lol, that would strike more fear than the name they have now, i asked a couple of friends about your question before lol so i know the feeling
Killer whales are indeed Dolphins. They are considered the giant Dolphins. They are not whales at all. So powerful and intelligent that they make white shark run for their life.
You are so lame. Don't you run away in a car or a yatch? If you want to get grammatically correct. The swimming away trying to scape from Killer Whales. You are the worst troll ever.
What are you talking about??? My blood pressure is right on the dot. 12/7. Besides, I wasn't infuriated nor rattle by anything you said. I just stated two facts. You are awful as a troll and killer whales are in fact dolphins. =)
Screw his light jest of the phrase. He is a clown who was looking for attention. My mistake was that I gave to him. He is an asshole and that's as undeniable as Killer whales are dolphins. He doesn't know me to act like that. He is the one who take phrases literally and use it to make a sorry of a joke.
There has never been any account of killer whales harming humans in the wild. They are very smart that they can distinguish between food and humans. Don't mistake them for sharks.
gothicheiressleah really? id have thought as they eat seals, a person would be pretty similar and just as easy to toss around. half expected them to ram the boat or something. i know they clearly were not being aggressive but id have been far more worried than excited when a whole pod of pack hunting animals that eat seals surround a small boat of people
gothicheiressleah The orcas only ate people at SeaWorld only because they were kept in captivity for too long, that's the only time orcas ate people. Orcas eating people in the wild was never heard of..
If Killer whales turned on us. sharks wouldn't even be scary compared to them. Killer whales are smart, and even more powerful, pitch black and their teeth look like they are made of white metal. they swim so fast for their size. i think they're crazy to look at.
They are Orcas, not killer whales. we don't say killer Lions, or killer Eagles. We must be careful to raise the awareness of how special these creatures are. People are very ignorant and if they think "Killer" whale that puts them at risk. There has never been an injury to a human by an Orca in the wild. Imprisoned orcas have killed, but that was because they should never be caged. Humans are too stupid to recognize the wonder that these creatures are and afford them the respect and dignity they deserve.
lol, so when the two of you go swimming with the Orca's be sure to film the event so we can all see just how playful they are. I seriously can't believe you posted that no person has ever been injured by an Orca in the wild smh so you know what every pod of 20 plus whales is up to. I think you just wanted to let people know their scientific name but Orca doesn't care who it eats man or seal
Arthur Echols You miss the point of my post but I'm guessing your just enjoying being cynical and I get it. Here's the point, they should not be caged, and people should not go swimming with them. But I encourage you to find a documented instance of an Orca harming a human in the wild.
I agree they shouldn't be caged I also think the term killer whale is accurate and might actually save the life of someone who may be ignorant to the threat after seeing free willy or some sea world show. I'm more concerned about the people who mite make a terrible mistake the whales can take care of themselves.
Actually theres a bunch of videos on people free diving with orcas and they never were touched or even bothered , they are peaceful creatures. Of course an animal , mammal , or even person can become dangerous once feeling threatened so they could attack but they are very intelligent and know we dont pose a threat to them .
Part of me really wants to live along the coast just to be able to see orcas every day - I've loved them since I was a kid! But then I remember I'm a broke college kid . . .
I grew up on an island in British Columbia, and saw whales, dolphins, and all manner of sea creatures on a regular basis from my living room windows. And the fishing... Oh my.
@@octapusxft They are still in the Toothed Whale family. As are all members of the dolphin family. So they ARE whales, but not all whales are dolphins.
Michael Price but isn't bent dorsals more prevelant in older males than the younger males or females? I've seen orcas in captivity and they didn't have bent dorsals
***** They're nearly universal in males in captivity -- not in wild orcas, male or females. The captive ones you saw without bent dorsals were likely females (though sometimes captive females get them as well). Occasionally wild orcas have bent dorsals, but it's not very common.
Killer whales are just a tag, they're bow riding because in reality they're dolphins! Awesome footage, unreal thrill for these people. Nothing like seeing animals in the wild doing what they're supposed to be doing where they're supposed to be doing it. Awesome!
Have you heard the story of Keiko the orca, who they tried to free, but in the end he died because he got too close to a large ship and was struck by the propeller? Yeah they found he was seriously malnurished and relied too heavily on humans to know how to hunt. Sure, go ahead and free them all so they can suffer the same fate. A slow long starving death. Is that what you want?
+CarusioMystWolf Maybe if they weren't in seaworld in the first place, they'd know how to live for themselfes. But you'll probably just come up with come excuse like seaworld is "Saving" them.
Because they do kill, they are sometimes referred as the wolves of the sea (Panda bears are vegetarians!), they hunt in packs and are extremely vicious with their preys. They kill baby whales while the mother is nursing it by drowning, very horrible. Orcas although have highly developed social skills are very imposing, violent creatures always scouting the territory for Orca females and more baby whales. They are nasty evolved creatures. Don't mess with them...you don't want to deal with those teeths.
Because aside from humans. Orcas are THE apex predator. As someone else mentioned, they hunt like wolves. Only these wolves weigh five tons, have human-like intelligence, and are notorious for playing with their food while it's still alive. Hell they even kill sharks only to harvest particular organs, before abandoning the carcass and moving on to their next victim. And if that weren't enough; do some research on what they've been known to do to other (larger) species of whales. The real question is; what is it about us that attracts their curiosity even though they don't see us as food?
Just look at the speed and the distance these giants can travel! This is just not something that the orcas in Seaworld will ever have. No wonder the orca in Seaworld have deformities such as floppy dorsal fins!
I am 100% jealous!! I love seeing the Orcas just wild and free in the open water which is where they and all wild sea creatures belong. Not trapped in a concrete water jail cell with their dorsal fin flopped over instead of sticking straight up in the water....Take notes Sea World, its not normal for their dorsal fins to be flopped over to the side like your trainers try to tell the audience. This was amazing to watch!
agree... a memory that will last a lifetime. Its unfortunate that people misinterpret Orcas as fearsome predators. While thats true, Orcas (for whatever reason) don't eat or intentionally harm humans.
THIS is what happy whales are like!!! Seaworld is disgusting to take these beautiful cheerful creatures out of their natural habitat. this is a really sweet video though!
I doubt very much if the orcas would have harmed any of the divers. There are no records of an orca ever attacking a human being in the wild. In fact, what we know about orcas gives us every indication that they are highly intelligent, socialized creatures with strong family bonds and a sense of self.
No fatal attacks have occurred in the wild, there were attacks but they're accidental. We look nothing like what they normally eat or see in their habitat (fish, squid, crustacea, seals, porpoise,...), so there's no reason for them to attack us. Also many Orcas live couple of miles close to the coasts (residents or transients), so human-Orca contact would be quite common, and yet attacks have remained rare.
Ships were probably quite mean to them first. Elephants hide their tusks because they know people find them valuable. Orcas are just as smart or smarter.
I'm going to be pedantic for a moment and say they're actually dolphins, not whales. They're referred to as whales because it doesn't have specific requirements, and is just generally referred to as a big sea animal. Scientifically/biologically speaking though, killer whales are part of the dolphin family, which probably helps explain their nicer aesthetic.
***** you obviously havent seen frozen planet then. A group of whales are filmed trying to wash a cameraman out of his boat using the same technique they use to wash the seals from the ice bergs to eat them. www.discovery.com/tv-shows/frozen-planet/videos/filming-a-killer-whale-hunt.htm
You didn't quite get that last comment did ya? Let me rephrase - You were dismissing fact because it is 'not interesting' - I was merely pointing out to how ridiculous that it is by doing exactly the same... but you totally missed that. Another point - An Orca is not a whale. It is a dolphin. Also, at what point did I say I thought all whales 'follow boats trying to kill humans'. Have I just got into a youtube debate with an adolescent? Whoops.
Katie True, but there are more than one type of toothed whale, and the Orca is a member of the Oceanic dolphin group. That is why they act so much like Dolphins, because they ARE Dolphins.
Yes, agreed. Beautiful video of Orcas enjoying themselves! See how close they are to the boat! Incredible dexterity and finesse, an evolutionary triumph and very deep intellect
For those of you into dolphins I have a great vid of hundreds of dolphins on my channel doing the same thing to our boat. In front of, behind, and flanking both sides. Was in South Africa. An amazing trip.
XxCrazyxX Thank you. It's mostly tech stuff with a few vids of my trip to South Africa. Honestly I have lost the desire to create new tech content. Maybe I'll get my second wind.
what an amazing experience. We could all wish for such a thing but what a rare experience you got to enjoy. Thanks for sharing the wonderful video. They are such lovely creatures.
because we call them killer whales folks don't know they are in the dolphin family. i found out a few years back , but always felt that's what they were lol.
Yeah, many unnecresary comments, really sad that the internet can have kind of effect on people, Actually now that I think about I ahve experienced more of this comments when theres a lady in the video. Either thats just me or some people really need to grow up.
Everytime a fat person is on any boat, killer whales get confused thinking that someone has kidnaped one of their own. I dont blame the whales , but people who allowed fat people on their boats. There is a weight limit on everything!!!.
Parker Andrews I feel there are too many mean and unnecresary comments here about the lady. calling her a whale and stuff like that. Also according to your comment its ound like youa are saying everybody does it, so its okay.
THIS, and ONLY this way, is how we should experience the beauty of these animals. In the natural environment, when THEY choose to show us how amazing they are. On THIER own terms. Besides the fact that this is not inhumane, tell me this isn't worlds better than some bullshit seaworld show. This isn't rehearsed, forced by starving acrobatics.. this is real life Orcas, enjoying the natural open ocean. Get the Orca whales out of these theme parks and back where they belong. #blackfish
Well If you ever saw one in real life youd know they are extremely efficient predators. IF they wanted to they could have had them. They were playing, They dont always eat what they kill and they dont always kill what they play with. They are very intelligent. When I was a child I watched them herd seals onto a small island in an estuary. There were four of them and they worked together, herding the seals onto the rock and then coming out of the water onto the isle and picking the seals of one by one.
Once we were fishing for salmon and as they chased salmon under our boat one's fin bumped our boat. It was a 21 ft boat and rocked that boat from gunwale to gunwale. He wasnt even trying. If he was he probably couldve capsized us.
No they absolutely are not. Orcas' echolocation and eyesight is so precise, they can tell whether something is prey, in which boats and humans do not match that criteria. They might be doing this to prepare themselves for hunting down fast prey, but they never have the intention of killing humans in the wild(given that there are no attacks on humans from orcas there, where the opposite can be said for captivity). Plus, orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family, and many other species of dolphin have shown to do this exact kind of thing purely for fun. Orcas, just like any other dolphin, are very playful creatures who mean no harm towards us.
@@itzmemd Believe it or not I was actually there that exact same day and me & my dive master jumped out and swam with them. A video I took is on youtube and you'll find it if you search "Man & Boy Swim With Orcas In Sea of Cortez." I was 13 years old and recording with a $50 Sam's club camera so don't expect much haha. So I can assure you that they were not hunting the boats. If they were they would've surely devoured me when I jumped in.
schattensand Well then, maybe they aren't as intelligent as some would have us believe. I mean, a true form of intelligence would say (propeller + close proximity = laceration) therefore (propeller > blubber + hide). Conclusion: stay away from propeller.
Katie frasher I've heard mention of groups talking about "sequestering" these whales in a large inlet off of Washington State. Close it off with huge nets and keep them in there, with miles of space to swim around. Of course, they'd probably still have to be fed, because they were enslaved for so long, but at least they'd be as free as we could make them without sending them to starve out in the ocean.
Jettero Fletcher I'd never heard of that but that sounds like it be a great way to compromise. Keeping the whales healthy and safe while giving them more freedom.
Duh... The orcas were surfing in the wake that the boat was making. Dolphins do it all the time. Why is it such a surprise that orcas would also do it? It is likely that it's not something we humans usually see. Thus, the surprise. It certainly indicates that cetaceans in general are extremely intelligent and resourceful.
Everything you said in your comment was already stated in the video. 1)She said that as soon as the boat moved the Orcas started playing in the wake. 2) She said it was a once in a lifetime thing (which of course speaks to why they're so excited 3) They weren't surprised to see a cousin of a dolphin (re: the Orca) doing what dolphins do, that's not where the excitement was, it was in seeing them close up to the boat and having the time to see their eyes and observe them, which she stated in the video. Nobody ever said anything about not understanding what they were doing or why. On the contrary, clearly they know what the whales were doing and why. I suppose I'm just confused as to why you restated everything in the video. Absolutely no offense meant.
Wow!!! What an honor!!! Orcas must sense that this couple was marine animal lovers¡ That is a truly amazing experience!! So happy for them!!! 👏👏👏👏😍💜🐬🦈🐠🐳💜
HAHAHA, THOSE ORCAS WEREN'T PLAYING! THEY WERE LOOKING FOR LUNCH! OTHERWISE, WHY DIDN'T THE BOAT STOPPED? THEY KNOW BETTER NOT TO STOP, PLAYING FOR OVER AN HOUR AFTER YOU?? HEE HEE GET REAL PEOPLE!!
They were what? looking for lunch? so you mean that those Orcas couldn't have bumped onto the ship if they wanted? Get your facts right. Dolphins are very intelligent animals with high sense of humour. They love to play around. And following a ship like this is just not a new news, ok?
Wow. What a witty observation. Apart from making me break out the sarcasm, your comment has had three results - It demonstrates that you have a less than original and juvenile sense of humour, it seems to suggest that you're not a particularly kind person and finally it hints at misogyny (the man is larger and yet you chose to insult the woman - very telling.)
Yes, it could be very dangerous any boat propeller hitting a 12,000 lb creature happily swimming nearby minding it's own business, will surely ruin it...the propeller I meant.
Many tour boats these days are required to put a guard around the propeller so that larger sea life will bounce off the guard instead of getting chopped up. It still results in serious injury if it's a collision however, and most larger boats likely don't bother with the guards because they create drag.
You can tell by the shape of the dorsal fin that it is a local pod. Transient dorsal fins are usually long and narrow in comparison to short and wide in local pods. And transient orca's feed primarily on fish, not mammals. Although being an opportunistic feeder is an evolutionary advantage nearly 100% of the time. I am a fish biologist, and although I have never directly worked with or studied orca I have a healthy respect for them. If you don't think they see you as a potential food item then you are kidding yourself. The rule of thumb in nature is, "if it fits in your mouth its edible". The reason you don't see many recorded kills is due to some very simple facts. 1.) Orca and human very rarely interact due to geographic separation, 2.) You would be extremely alien to an orca. Their mind set would probably be inquisitive at first. Until they worked out that you did not pose a threat and were edible. 3.) Most large mammals and fish associate people with danger and usually keep their distance.
"The rule of thumb in nature is, "if it fits in your mouth its edible". " That's the rule for some species not for all by any stretch. Sharks for instance rarely eat people, even though we clearly fit in their mouths (or would after a few shakes). Killer whales NEVER eat people, even though we've interacted for centuries and even cooperated at one point. They know our capabilities. They know we're not a threat. In fact they probably figured that out five minutes after they met us.
You are looking at this with a very narrow mind set. Killer Whales, unlike human beings, are still a part of nature; where the law of natural selection still governs. Killer Whales consume elephant seals... are you trying to imply that they do not eat us because "they" recognize us as intelligent creatures? If this is your argument then I completely disagree. In nature an animals very survival depends on it taking EVERY opportunity to feed. These animals can sometimes go days, weeks, and even months without anything substantial for food. And my statement earlier in the post, "if it fits in your mouth it's edible", is entirely true... 100% in nature.
Ty Hardymon "You are looking at this with a very narrow mind set." No I'm looking at it with a view at the evidence. Killer whales in the wild do not attack humans. I didn't say that they didn't attack us because we're intelligent, just that they don't attack us. We probably don't taste good. "very survival depends on it taking EVERY opportunity to feed." Not true, lots of animals feed selectively, ignoring some prey if they can get better. " And my statement earlier in the post, "if it fits in your mouth it's edible", is entirely true... 100% in nature. " No it's full of shit. Try looking at the actual facts.
Ty Hardymon ". And I do have scientific evidence, and observations, to back up my statements. " No you don't. There is no evidence of Orcas eating humans in the wild. There is no evidence of Orcas attacking humans they knew to be humans in the wild. That's why you talked about chimpanzees you moron, because the evidence on Orcas is all against you. ". But what you don't have the right to do is make up your own facts.' I didn't, you did. The claim that animals eating anything that fits in their mouth is universal isyou making up your own facts. It's not true and there's no evidence that it's true. "I am a biologist and I have worked and studied fisheries science for years. " You're not and you haven't. If you had you would have known not to make bullshit claims about Orca behaviour. "The reason these chance encounters between humans and Killer whales do not always end violently; " Do not EVER end violently. There is maybe 2 cases of Orcas biting humans, both of them apparently due to Orcas mistaking them for prey species and abandoning the attack when they realised they were humans. "is mostly due to the fact that they have never seen a human up close before. " Untrue, there were plenty of Orcas that frequented whaling areas and saw humans up close. They even cooperated in places like Twofold Bay in Australia. Your ignorance is complete. Look shut the fuck up. You know nothing so just listen to your betters. "But I promise you... given the time and the opportunity it would eventually work out that you were food. " And yet it hasn't happened in hundreds of years.
feel free to check out my facebook page or even google search my name. You will see that I am in fact a fisheries biologist. Your ignorance of natural relationships is mythic. And can only be outdone by your booming personality. I'll not be responding to this thread anymore since it is no longer productive. Take care.
This is literally my dream come true, a literal dream ive had. That is so amazing, all Ive ever wanted was to see them in the wild and happy with nothing but vast ocean as their playground. Love it when people leave animals where they belong to admire them even if it means most of us wont ever experience anything like this 😢 my heart swells to see dorsal fins standing tall and swimming free as it should be. (bit jealous she found a guy with this same love I have, good on her tho)
