Really like hearing Klavan opinion on movies and shows !! Ben makes stuff too political when he does it, Klavan talks about the movie first which is great!

Klavan himself has pointed out that Ben needs to "agree" with a movie in order to like it. Drew can see a movie on its own terms, regardless of whether he assents to its message.

Lol. Modern movies insinuate political and cultural rot into everything, Klava n makes excuses for the woke depravity too often...stupidly claiming very often its the artist vision...when only an idiot would call it vision or art. It's because he doesn't like taking on his Hollywood pass and book writers. Too often pea brains except garbage...

I agree with you. So many conservative films or even worse Christian films do not show the complexity of human character. They good guys are too pristine and "Hallmark" like. The bad guys are so one dimensional. The difference is like the fashion sense of Melania Trump vs Jill Biden. It is ironic that the roles are reversed in that example, Liberal vs Conservative.

Good observation about too-long movies. Same with books. I recently had to give up on trying to get through the entire Gulag Archepelago because it is very tedious stuff and it's TWO THOUSAND PAGES long. Somebody should have told Solzhenitsyn that if he really wanted everybody in the world to understand how horrible the Soviet system was, he should have made the story a little more accessible. Say, three hundred fifty pages.

I trust Scorsese as to his longer films. "Wolf of Wall Street" at 3 hours flew by for me. Honestly, when it finished I turned to my friend and said, "It's over? THAT was 3 hours?!" Fabulously entertaining, great storytelling. Similar with "Casino". "Silence" wasn't as long, but far more dark and intense. That was a grind, not meant as a criticism, though. Well worth it to sit through that depth of evil on display and the spirituality therein.

Imo both Deniro and Dicaprio are miscast. Hale (Deniro’s character) was in his late 40s when this all took place, but Deniro is in his 80s. And Burkhart was in his 20s but Leo is about 50. Both were Texans but the accents attempted by both Deniro and Dicaprio in this movie are unbelievably contrived. But, that’s Scorsese - always casting NY Italians. I am surprised that he didn’t have Joe Pesci playing Mollie Burkhart!

"You know why the good guys are doing what they are doing, but you can't imagine why the bad guys are doing what they're doing" I think I would normally agree. But in this case it just seemed more like bad film-making to me. Neither of the main characters were given any real motivation to propel them through the story (Decaprio wants to be rich I guess, but he gets money early on, and from then on just kinda does what he's told for the rest of the movie. It's honestly a chore to watch a protagonist who just goes whichever way the winds blow him, and that's essentially what decaprio's character did for the whole movie. Deniro's character was more proactive, but he seemed to be just motivated by money, and he's an old man who won't be around much longer to spend it. I suppose he wants it for his children(?) but the movie doesn't do much to support this as a motivation. My guess is his actual motivation was that he's been ripping off the natives all his life, so he's just in the habit of doing so. To me that motivation is also really boring, and boils down to being plot driven. In a faster paced movie it would be fine, but this film is very self-indulgent and just drags on and on. I haven't seen all of scorcese's films, but they all seem to have this painful quality (with the exception of the departed which was apparently a shot-for-shot remake).

"Hamlet" - the play (I'm not talking of the various movie adaptations of it) is - in its unabridged form - about 3 and three quarter hours in performance. "Hamlet" is considered by a good many people to represent the zenith in theatre (and, remember, it was written in or around the 1590s). I don't wish to sound elitist..... but ... what some people used to refer to as the "flicks" - do not generally aspire to any great philosophical statement or in-depth psychological examination - if a movie does happen to achieve that, then I would argue it's not a function of the movie's running time - maybe 120 mins or so is needed for such an outcome ....but 220 mins - come on !

Great review I can always tell who has a deep understanding of film. I do disagree with the statement that the movie could have been shorter. You can’t say there is not a scene you need to cut and in the same breath say the movie is to long it’s a huuuuge contradiction. a movie length is determined by each scene that is necessary to tell the story some long movies would work better if it was longer, and some movies would work better if they were shorter it depends on the story and the execution of the story. So to say a movie is to long for the simple fact that it is to long for audiences is a incorrect take. I also disagree with the statement that this movie is not a epic, the movie is very much a epic just a intimate epic.
@denroy3

Disagree that you can't tell a good story from the lawman's side, frankly, i don't know what the hell you're talking about. Scorsese has no interest in exploring that side for sure. But the beginning of the FBI is a story that can be told. I think Martin tried both sides in 'The Departed', but the real exploration in that was still the criminals.

Generally, when you claim a 3-hour film can be told in 2-hours, you can think of one example of something that can be cut. For example, Oppenheimer. I would say the final hour of security clearance hearings could have been cut at least by half if not completely because they had virtually no dramatic stakes and were insanely repetitive. Saying you don’t know what you would cut but it should be cut because reasons is a lazy populist cop out, especially in a time where people will binge through entire seasons of a TV show in a weekend.

Really thought this movie was very good. I really think it could've been 2 hours and 45 minutes or even 3 hours personally. Again, there's nothing I would really cut out but I would've condensed it as well. I think that's the only thing that may hurt this movie with audiences. Leonardo's acting was some of the best if not the best I've ever seen and Gladstone knocked it out of the park. I've seen her in a couple of smaller budget movies but she was spectacular in this film. Totally kept up, if not upstaged Leonardo and DeNiro. DeNiro was great as always cause, hey, it's DeNiro. I thought this was a great role for him to get back to more of the serious villainous characters he used to play a lot in the 80s and 90s and it was so nice to see him having fun doing that kind of stuff again. The music was great, the cinematography was great, costumes and setting was beautiful, and kept to the real life story very well. All in all, I'd give it a 7.5-8/10. I think the length just really kicked it down to be able to sit through and feel like it deserved its length to tell the story.

In the little bit of it I watched, I found it to be a "turn it up, turn it down" kind of movie. The story and characters didn't grab my interest at all.

I really enjoyed this movie, but I honestly wish I had seen it at home simply due to the long run time. I also didn't realize the movie's POV was so different from the book, but I'm glad they gave Gladstone the chance to show what she can do by focusing on her and DiCaprio's characters.

Yeah, I’m beginning to wish now that they brought back intermissions into three hour movies.

@@osmanyousif7849 my sister told me about how certain countries still have those (like India, I believe), and I honestly wouldn't mind that. As it is, I have RunPee to help for the really long films now.

Isn't that the difference between "Conservatives", and "Liberals"? One sees the darkness in man and turns away, to God. The other sees the darkness and turns away from God. And no amount of money would get me to watch Robert Deniro in anything.

Can you imagine how he was tortured to have to be on location in Red State Oklahoma? I imagine he was triggered by the dt flags.

The movie was unnecessarily long, and extremely boring. I fell asleep twice due to the dry acting.

Thats how I felt about Oppenheimer. So many people loved it but there was no justification for it being that long. I was bored.

Sorry Andrew, but you're all over the map on this. It's "remarkable" but ....? You say it's too long, but you don't know what to cut. You say cut a minute here or there so you would have more than 90 cuts by that logic? A minute can convey a lot! You've fallen into the "instant gratification" trap. I waited to watch your review until I watched the movie. I don't go to theaters, so I waited until I could watch from the comfort of my home, just like you. Personally, I'm tired of Hollywood pumping out crap just to shove something into the theaters. No time to flesh out the characters. No requirement that the audience actually THINK about it. Maybe, just maybe the lack of "discipline" is actually the audience's. What would you say to someone who said your books were too long and that you needed to cut 10 pages from each chapter because your readers don't have the attention span of a gnat. I can guess. 👎

No, exactly like he said, this is not an epic tale, no reason for it to be so long. Restrictions on film makers are generally good.

So dumb, they are professional actors on the screen, they become these characters, not the people you read about online. Your problem with their movies is exactly that, your problem in not knowing what a movie is. Such a sad thing for you and so many others today.

LOL. That is some fascinatingly inaccurate mind reading. I know what a movie is supposed to be. Escapism. When actors use their fame platform (that has been given to them by their fans) to promote idiotic hypocritical political views, and dump on their fans, it pollutes the roles they are in. Like a football player crapping on their own country while getting paid an enormous amount to represent it. It's toxic to the profession, and should not be encouraged.

Friendly reminder that Klavan wrote the screenplay for One Missed Call, one of the worst films ever made. So, take everything he says about whether a movie is good or bad with a grain of salt.
