Gale, if you don't have a PhD yet, some University needs to issue you an honorable one in hot rodding. These are some of the most well controlled experiments I've ever seen on engine modification and limit testing. I'm not an engineer, but I am a bit of a gearhead and I'm learning so much just binge watching this series. I just started playing around with boosted gasoline engines over the last few years (Ford Ecoboost stuff) and this helps me understand what's going on immensely. You measure everything, and there's very little left to interpretation with your methods, which can be applied to gas engines as well as you've said earlier in this series. You know exactly what's wrong, why it's wrong, and how to fix it (and if that's even possible with current equipment or if something needs further modification). Fantastic. This confirms a lot of things I've been suspicious of for a long time and just pours so much knowledge on top. I'm also pretty impressed with this Duramax long block. It's a pretty stout unit. The GM powertrain guys have really been knocking it out of the park over the last couple decades. All the OEMs have actually.

For someone that grew up watching gasoline engine tuning videos, my brain is having trouble comprehending these diesel AFR's. I had to rewind a few times to make sure I heard Gale say 17:1 was as RICH as he wanted to go. Awesome videos, keep up the great work. 👍

Do you guys know anything about tuning other than this page? Making 852 out of a Dirtmax is what guys in their garage do with Ebay/china parts. Gale should be starting at 1000hp or he isn't even trying. Lol! The Internet is real. People can google now. Pretending you are doing something amazing doesn't work these days. At least not with folks who can reason. :)
@jjames5928
@jjames5928 4 года назад
@@eriklarson9137 well actually I do . Not on Duramax or Powersroke but I do work with Cummins in a daily basis , and someone is living inside your head rent free. If that's how you think tuning works. The Cummins for instance 100% over injectors , dual CP3 , studs , larger intercooler , compound over stock / compound no VGT on manifold , springs and valves Were getting upwards of 700 on compound over stock And 825 is the average on compounds without a factory VGT on the manifold None of those are "eaby/Chinese parts" Just because someone slaps a bottle to their Honda civic dosnt mean it's a 400hp car , it means its gonna blow sooner or later. What Gale banks is doing is Pushing the limits of stock components , upgrading the ones that fail and push it further.... you obviously know nothing about tuning

Gale and crew you guys should make a video explaining how the dyno is controlled, that switch he is turning on by the gauges when your doing a pull stuff like that. I bet alot of people would like knowing what's going on and hows it accomplished.
@NBSV1
@NBSV1 4 года назад
Rusty Hill He’s hitting a button by the gauges to start the data logging. Otherwise these dynos are almost always basically a large water pump as the load and have a computer controlled valve to adjust the pump flow. More flow is more load and thereby takes more power. They also sometimes have a sensor to measure twist and translate that into torque. The actual dyno is pretty simple, but all the sensors and data collection is what gets complicated.

I am learning so much. Thank you. It is interesting the 711 sweet spot you have found. Someone should freeze that in time and start duration testing. That could become an incredible stock build if the things like filters and electrical issues are stable. Great series Mr, Banks.

100% injectors really draw on the high pressure pump too. I like compound but have the turbos feed the Lycoming blower. It won't be as effecient as two stage turbo but it will be way more responsive. The twin screw makes boost from idle and they weren't spinning it close to maximum speed. Having both stages of forced induction working at about a 3:1 pressure ratio wouldn't be too hard and would keep turbine drive pressure way down. 3:1 as in 44 pounds atmosphere absolute out of the turbo compressor into the twin screw, another 3:1 compression there, so total manifold pressure is about 130psi absolute or about 115psi boost. The issue is the turbo compressors are way too small for this.

I love that Gale takes the time to show us the numbers and the science behind what a stock engine can take and how to get it to the limit. But, what I really want to know or see tested is how much power and torque you can make with an intact emissions system and make it as efficient as possible. Yea, watching an essentially deleted Duramax make over 900HP from the crank is fun. But what's the fun if I can't put those parts Gale is using in my truck and have the same numbers.

My best example is my Cummins powered Motorcoach it couldn't pull hills bigger than a speed bump at more than 45 mph now I have to watch the pyrometer and hold the EGT to 1300 or less to keep the engine coolant 230 or less, if I didn't care I could pull most grades at 60 MPH easy. Best thing I did to that 180 HP Cummins was add the Banks Power Pak. @@LiveLaughLove9255 You are correct 2007 was the last year for the LBZ. And last of the "Classic" Silverado also.2008 started the new body in the 2500 and 3500. 2007 was the first year for the 1500 new body,it was actually the second half of 2007. They had both 2007 body styles in the 1500 series on dealer lots.

I really love watching you work. I'm a data junky as well and this all makes sense. Put a 700HP kit together for my 2020 please.

You just need an exhaust and turbo and you'll make 700 no problem lol

I'm excited. Kinda want to do this to my TDI jetta tho.. Don't have a diesel truck. :D

It would be something to see the exhaust flow porting from the valves to the flange on the heads. If I recall, they do not look like they are big on flow design in stock form.

Gayle you will need to stud the cylinder heads at 252psi cylinder pressure I want to see how far you can go with it. A larger turbo will be more efficient and S and S 100over injector you could possibly hit 1000 hp. Love the videos wish I had your intercooler kit for my truck. Nice series very informational.

Your choke point is the transition from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo inlet cast piece. Much larger injectors will allow you to make more hp at a lower rpm, also allowing a bigger timing window to play with and cyl pressure will go down as well. No need to change the turbo yet.

Love the data Gale! To answer your question, what I would do...well, in one of your previous videos about inter-cooling comes to mind as well as your thoughts about redesigning exhaust manifolds and bigger injectors. Would a different turbine wheel or turbocharger be needed 🤔 perhaps. If the turbine inlet temp. is lowered and the exhaust is flowing more efficiently, plus the fuel is there- I’d say that turkeys been buttered 😋

A bunch of people are suggesting compound turbos but I'm not seeing an intercooler on the current setup unless that's what the orange hoses are maybe delivering cooling water too. If not already fitted, surely that's the next step with bigger injectors to get more fuel and increased MAD. I seem to recall that also helps EGT and gets the turbo pressures where you want them, ie. lower exhaust manifold pressure vs higher inlet pressure,ie. turbo efficiency.

If you mentioned the exhaust manifold itself, I missed it. Agree w/the 5" piping & larger injectors. Is the exh manifold a restriction at all? New casting on intake manifold to reduce the # of redirection the incoming air has to negotiate? Have we (you) maxed out the air cooler? LOVE these! Keep'em comin'!!
