For years, it was understood that Lori Lieberman's poem about Don McClean was the inspiration behind the iconic ballad, "Killing Me Softly." Until it wasn't. Here's the story of how the person whose writing was the foundation for this Grammy-winning song was edged out of a writing credit, and later, denied any acknowledgement of her work being the inspiration for the classic Roberta Flack hit at all.

I'm consistently floored by your extremely high production quality, passion, and research. This is a tragic tale well told, and the story of this song will stick with me forever. Thank you

Back in the 70’s Casey Casem on America’s Top Forty told Lori’s story about seeing Don McLean and writing Killing Me Softly on a napkin.

There are shameless thieves, narcissists & misogynists all over. As well as weak leaches that don’t speak up for the truth. It’s shameful each & every time. Thank you for clarifying the truth of Laurie Lieberman’s legacy, it’s important

Two things: 1) good on Don McLean for speaking up and refusing to back down. 2) this is literally exactly what the song “You’re So Vain” is about. Svengalis.

Thank you for the in-depth story. Misogyny is still alive and well, but the stories from only 40-50 years old are so disheartening. Thank you for sharing the real story. I am impressed with Don McLean, though. He sure came through with that article! 👍🏼👍🏼

Hello Ms. Starr Tucker! This was a really great feature with lots of impressive research on the longest running Billboard pop #1 song of 1973, the great “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” I am glad that Ms. Roberta Flack took Ms. Lieberman’s side, too. I think an enormous number of young female actresses and other professions, as well as musicians and singer songwriters, are exploited by men in the industry. You are great to have helped Ms. Lieberman out this way! Yesterday by coincidence I found and bought the 8-track tape of her first album “Lori Lieberman.” As was common in those days, the 8-track tape did not list songwriting credits or musicians. (Lyrics? Forget it.) But I believe you about her only being credited for writing one song on the album on the vinyl album. The “A Thousand Dreams” album mentioned in the Charles Fox interview was released in 1995; it seems odd they were discussing in the early 1970s putting a song on an album from over two decades later. Could you please correct the spelling of Don McLean’s last name in the caption's first line and in the graphic at 8:46? Thank you and have a great weekend!

You're such an incredible storyteller. Always balanced and objective. I so relate to Lori's naiveté in the music industry. I also accepted that I had no recourse once releases found some success since I failed to set myself up properly from the start to receive credit for features, writing, and vocal production. When you're that young & inexperienced, you let all kinds of things fly so as to not disrupt the flow of creativity. I saw you tagged her on IG. I hope she sees what an amazing job you've done recounting the true order of events. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

Great video. I read a book once that said it was about "Vincent" (Starry, Starry, Night). So this also clears that up (The book made some other claims that also turned out to be wrong and were proven so in this day of the interweb).

What a couple of gangsters....not even succumbing to allow someone to take kudos and pleasure from writing a classic song. The music business has been full of these bottom feeders for eternity. Full praise to you Lori.......you should be compensated financially, you already have the ownership of the song in my eyes, it wouldn't exist if not for you.

I never cared for Roberta Flack's version when I was a kid (and her version was a new release). Then I heard the Fugee's version and loved it (The Score is on of my favorite albums of all time). I now appreciate Roberta Flack's version and feel that I should support a fellow DMVer.

This is Lori singing beautifully on the Mike Douglas show a year after she released her version of "Killing Me Softly". The one song she had written till this point in her life-- according to her, here on this clip-- is "My Lover Do You know" which was on her first album. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cTyGLBANuOg.html

When Taylor Swift says the most important thing to have in the music business is a good lawyer, and a friend who is a Dove Award winner echos that view by saying how many "snakes in the grass" there are in Christian music, I'm not surprised that a talented but young Lori Lieberman got shafted.

Artists like Lori do get ripped off. Those so called men should be ashamed of themselves.
@srdjr6760

Norman Gimble should be ashamed of himself for both taking advantage of Lori and for writing that crappy Happy Days theme song. Happy Days should have stick with Rock around the Clock (and kept Fonzie as a secondary character).
@bobdavis4848
@bobdavis4848 Год назад
Happy Days was initially set in the mid-1950s, but progressed and ended up set the early 1960s as the characters aged. So it would not have made sense to stick with "Rock Around The Clock" all through the seasons.

@srdjr6760 Год назад
@@bobdavis4848 Happy Days switched theme songs after season two, when they were still in the fifties. Regardless, the theme song sucked.

@@srdjr6760Ms. Lieberman's exploiter Norman Gimbel can't feel shame or anything else anymore, since he is deceased. If Ms. Lieberman's supporters such as ourselves misspell Gimbel's last name, we set ourselves up for the people who feel opposite to say something like "Gimbel / Fox are great and Lieberman's not, because (some nonsense) and look, this guy can't even spell Norman's last name correctly" to try to delegitimize our support of Ms. Lieberman. I'm not the biggest fan of the latter "Happy Days" theme, but many people must have liked it, because they kept it for many years. I'd never declare my own rare personal music dislikes as if they was absolute undebatable fact, with a term my deceased parents thought was crude, or any other insult. I believe everyone has a right to their own musical tastes, likes and dislikes. I like most music and I've enjoyed buying more of Ms. Lieberman's 1970s albums recently from a collector's shop. The Arthur Fonzarelli character got a bigger role because of his popularity, catchphrases, appearance, attitude and so on, and the Chuck character was dropped for kind of the opposite. I admire Ron Howard for standing his ground and saying he'd quit if they changed the name of the show to "Fonzie's Happy Days." I think that would have made the whole family seem way too secondary. I know when the show changed theme song; I saw shows from each season. I said it wouldn't have made sense to keep "Rock Around The Clock" "all through the seasons." Have a nice day and stay safe.
