Clay bodies used are b mix, brown speckled clay (laguna 60) and Sio2 black clay ❤️. Fired to cone 6 using a slow cool schedule. Glazes used are in the video!
Thank you so much Juli!!!! My goal is to just be transparent and share it ALL…that’s how we learn right? I’m in love w the black clay too. It feels so smooth in my hand (if burnished) and sanded with a diamond sander after the glaze firing 😊
@@thehappyhomesteadnh That's awesome! We're watching each other's videos! The "Pottery Community" is wonderful and so supportive of each other. Thank you for watching! See you in the next one... Cheers! jw
You do such beautiful pottery and have such a good variety. I love your testing of glazes and they turned out beautiful! At the studio I go to, a lady made test tiles of every combination of colors there could be. It is like Christmas going through to decide what we want to try. We don't have some of your colors and I am envious. Those bowls with the whites and turquoise and other colors are to die for. I love the blues and greens.
Thank you Tricia! I love variety..I get bored with the same old thing lol. I am envious of those test tiles you have! That’s one thing I need to start doing so it’s not so crazy trying to decide which glazes to use…like a deer in headlights 😂
Your eye for proportion is excellent. I get tired of seeing mugs that look like they're made by a kid in the name of "modern". Your work is beautiful. I am now a fan. I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you for posting!
Amy omg thank you so much…seriously that means the world to me! I think you made my day/night 😭❤️. I’m new at this you tube thing so it’s nice to get positive feedback and inspiration to keep making videos! I have another kiln unloading coming next weekend with new glazes 😳 can’t wait!
Thanks Sheila! I’m really starting to love spectrum and mayco. I find I don’t need as many layers as opposed to what I was using before, which was mainly amaco. I was applying like 10 layers of amaco before 😂
I love watching your videos and your work is phenomenal. I just started back up after retiring from teaching and a 30-year break on the wheel. There's so many new ideas and techniques out there. It's very inspiring! Thank you so much!❤
Thank you so much Claudia! Welcome back to pottery ❤️ I took a 15 year hiatus too and got back into it like 6 years ago…I know exactly what you mean about new techniques and ideas 😆. So happy for you!!!
I keep coming back and looking at some of your pieces, I really like them. I'm going to try and duplicate some of them. Thank you so much for the ideas.
You’ve got some really beautiful pieces!! That kiln load was like Mary Poppins’ bag!! I’ve got a few Spectrum glazes and I can’t get them to turn out well. B Mix clay. Moonscape had the biggest pin hole bubbles ever and Gold Rain comes out like a pewter or gun metal color. Ever tried either of those Spectrum glazes?
Thank you!!! So I fire to a cone 6 with a slow cool schedule which eliminates any pin holes! I used to get pin holes especially on the darker clay bodies but once I started the slow cool it fixed the problem. I can send you the firing schedule if you want! Haven’t used those glazes (yet) but I love spectrums pearl white or soft white as a base ..they do run tho so be careful lol
Wow! I really love the fact that you have so much variety in your work!! I can’t wait to make some of the cups with the divots on the sides. I keep forgetting to make them. May I suggest that you apply kiln wash to your shelves? It will definitely help with the drips. Make sure to use the kiln cookies under every piece if you have to, kiln wash the cookies as well.
Omg Michele thank you so much!!!! I didn’t realize I could kiln wash the cookies and re use them. Yes I do need to kiln wash the shelves lol. I think I did half of them and then wanted to get back to potting 🤣. I LOVE variety and playing with different clay bodies and glazes ❤️. Hopefully will have another glaze load in a month or so. Thanks again!
@@thehappyhomesteadnh Oh I’m so glad you found that helpful. I never know how to make suggestions for people. I try to tell people what I know that has helped me. I just had a huge kiln load a few days ago. Several pots are still pinging and several have crazed unfortunately. I’ve had this problem with the Amaco Celadons on 4 clay bodies. Unfortunately I bought 2 cases of it!!!
@@micheledickey4066 I’m just seeing this reply 😆 interesting. I used to get pin holes until I started using a slow cool firing schedule that eliminates pin holing and crazing!!! Happy to share it with you if you want to try. Which clay bodies are you using?
@@thehappyhomesteadnh I have a kiln sitter kiln so I can’t really do a slow cool other than letting it cool all the way on it’s own. I did notice that using a matte glaze with a gloss seemed to be an issue. But of course that leaves so many combos out that I can’t use. I. Was using continental clay b-clay but every time I got some it was different and they just had so much inconsistency it was frustrating. I am now using Minnesota flays no 3 clay. I was told it was close to bmix but.. I just fired some of it in a bisque for the first time and found out that it is NOT white!! It’s a buff color so now I have no idea how much of a difference that’s going to make with the glazes!! I used to use b-mix then I went to the b-clay and buff stoneware from continental. I’ve made test tiles with all 3 of those glazes and I am BEYOND pissed that this clay is not white!! I have spent more time, energy, clay and glaze on making all of these test tiles!
@@thehappyhomesteadnh I was thinking about making some colored clay and remembered you saying that you didn’t measure how much mason stain you put in yours and wanted to remind you that if you don’t measure the amount it will be hard to replicate a color that you really like as well as making matching pieces! I have done several glaze combos that I didn’t write down and I hate that I can’t re produce them so that’s why I write every dang thing down that I can! Just a thought.
@@thehappyhomesteadnh seems like amaco also has very nice glazes. Right now i work with mayco glazes. I love light green effects and sea colors. Like your chip and dip plate... You weren't sure abt it, but i love it!
@@sylviefeys744 oh so nice to hear! I was actually going to RE glaze it 😂 I’m just starting to use mayco too! I have TONS of Amaco glazes but got bored with them lol.
@@sylviefeys744 oh definitely!! I just bought frosted lemon and sandstone. Also have winterwood, Norse blue and can’t remember what else lol. I saw a gorgeous combo of frosted lemon over sandstone on bmix…I’m going to try it out on a set of cups for this kiln load 😳😍
Aw thank you so much!!!! It’s always just trial and error with glazes. Can’t be afraid to try new combos even though I get butterflies in my stomach every time 😂 I have a Skutt electric kiln which is almost 20 years old. I honestly didn’t think much about it when I bought it 20 years ago because I was just so excited to get one! However, Skutt has proved to be reliable and their customer service is incredible! A few of my parts started to go like 2 years ago and the technicians they have are so nice and so helpful!! I’ve heard great things about the L&L kilns too. Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching and supporting us!
@@thehappyhomesteadnh Thank you for your prompt and helpful reply. I'm just beginning the hunt for a home kiln so there's much trepidation! I look forward to more posts from you!
@@csgyoutubian5208 anytime!!! It’s my pleasure! I think your best contenders from what I have heard and experienced in the pottery world is Skutt or L&L!! You can’t go wrong with either of those brands! My best friend and long term potter just bought an L&L after researching between the two (skutt) for months!!! Good luck! So exciting to have your own kiln tho!
@@thehappyhomesteadnh I also really love the knitted effect mug [31:18] if you have time maybe you could do a video explaining how you did the texture? ☃
@@travelwell6049 oh so cool!!! Yes absolutely!!!! It’s a sweater mold from a cake decorating website! Good idea…will make a vid! Thanks for the inspo 🤗
Your pieces are amazing and great glaze combos. White underglazes don't show up great on a lighter clay body. I find the darker coloured clay and unglazed makes the White UG transfers pop
No way!!!! Yes I am!!! I’m in Salisbury NH just outside of concord or 20 min from tilton! Where are you located? Would love to meet up with some clay buddies locally 😍
@@thehappyhomesteadnh It's The Purple Pit Coffee Lounge, in the square. I do sell my pottery here, though I really wish I had more room for retail :/ I keep pulling out the old (early not so great pots) for the new cooler stuff :) We're open every day ...
Thank you for sharing your glazing information. My favorite one is the big bowl with pearl white on the inside. Really gorgeous. Could you advise what brand is the pearl white from? Also, when you use velvet underglaze, do you apply it on green ware or bisque? Thank you!
The underglaze I applied on bisque but it can also be applied on greenware. I honestly wasn’t crazy with the way the black underglaze came out…it had like a rough finish after being fired. Could be because it’s an old jar lol
Hi!!! I have been using Camille Hoffmans slow cool schedule in the Amaco glaze group on Facebook. It’s super long to type out and I don’t have it with me 😆 but if you go onto that Amaco glaze group and in the search bar, type Camille Hoffman, you will find her firing schedule for a slow cool for both cone 5 and 6! It’s a game changer! Let me know if u can’t find it and I will type it out here!
The farmhouse mugs, how much clay do you use when throwing this shape? Thank you for all your experiments 😊 I use a lot of your combos, but never get the gorgeous results you do 🫤
Hey! So I threw a shallow plate/bowl then I cut the rim about 1/3 of the way around in a downward spiral sort of. Then I took that cut piece (still attached from the point I started the cut) and placed it in a circle on the inside of the piece. I attached it and then had to add some coils to any uneven or open space where the dip part attaches to the bottom of the piece. So hard to explain! But I will make a video to show you!
@@thehappyhomesteadnh That is what I was guessing, some sort of fancy rim cutting. I don't know that my skill set is quite there yet. :) Would love to see a demo. There are a lot of chip and dip, but they are all pretty similar. Yours has a more artistic feel. Thanks!
@@bradellison1345 lol! I literally just learned how to make that! It’s trial and error and lots of shitty pots thrown off my back deck 😂..gotta try right? Ok thanks for the idea of a new video!!
