Older Kilwinning residents often fondly recall with affection the many sights along the Garnock river such as the Salmon Hole, Salmon Ladder at Dirrans. One of the other old memories is of the “White Brig”, spanning the river Garnock to the south of the town, just beyond the Airnworks Viaduct heading to the Auld Shore. My earliest memory of traversing the white brig was around 60 years ago in the late 1950’s. My ‘Airnworks’ pals and I would make our way over to Bogside Racecourse near Ravenspark Hospital.
21 years later, in 1979 I would walk the brig once again whilst on a family outing from Blacklands Crescent to the Auld Shore, filming the outing as I walked. Then, just a few weeks ago, in late 2023, I again made my way over the white brig yet again. On this occasion I filmed a [rather more eventful] walk on my iphone. This short film combines my memories of those three spells, spanning 60 years, when I ventured to cross the “white brig”.
