C). Figured it out in my head. Sixteen quarters is $4.00 and thirteen dimes is $1.30.

I had it at 20 quarters and 3 dimes.😊 But $5.30 can be added up, using quarters and dimes with all different kinds of assortments.

Solved in my head at about 0:45, my answer is c) 13d, 16q. If we start with all dimes, we have $2.90, thus we need to make up $2.40 by substituting quarters for dimes. Each quarter, being worth $0.25, is $0.15 more than a dime, so $2.40 / $0.15 = 16 quarters to substitute for dimes. 29 - 16 = 13 dimes remaining. 16 # $0.25 = $4.00 in quarters. So, $1.30 in dimes + $4.00 in quarters = $5.30 total.

C = 13 dimes and 16 quarters. x + y = 29 0.1x + 0.25y = 5.30 Use substitution method

Two variables and two equations... that's easy: D = number of dimes (10 cents) and Q = number of quarters (25 cents) D + Q = 29 coins and 10.D + 25.Q = 530 cents 10.(29 - Q) + 25.Q = 530 or 290 - 10.Q + 25.Q = 530 or 15.Q = 240 So Q = 240/15 = 16 coins and D = 29 - 16 = 13 coins Check: 13 + 16 = 29 coins and 16 x 25 + 13 x 10 = 400 + 130 = 530 cents No calculator needed of course... 16 x 25 = (16/4) x (25x4) and 240 / 15 = (240x2) / (15x2) = 48 / 3

D + Q = 29; Q = 29 - D .1D + .25Q = 5.30 10D + 25Q = 530 10D + 25(29 - D) = 530 10D + 725 -25D 25D - 10D = 725 - 530 = 195 15D = 195 D = 13 Q = 16 # of dimes = 13 # of quarters = 16 Verification 13 * .10 + 16 * .25 = 1.30 + 4.00 = $5.30

D + Q = 29 .10d + .25q = 5.30 .10d + .10q = 2.90 .15q = 2.40 q = 16 d = 13 16 x .25 = 4.00 13 x .10 = 1.30 Total. = 5.30

It’s a combination of values and pieces. If I exchange two quarters for a half dollar, a fraction has been reduced but what got reduced? Either way it’s fifty cents. What got reduced is coins went from two to one. Pieces and values.

0.10D+0.25Q=$5.30 D+Q=29 0.10D+0.25Q=$5.30 -0.10(D+Q=29) 0.10D+0.25Q=$5.30 -0.10D-0.10Q=-2.90 0.15Q=2.40 Q=2.40/0.15 Q=16 D+16=29 29-16=13=D 13+16=29 0.10(13)+0.25(16)=$5.30. 13 dimes and 16 quarters.

To do it in your head without multiple choice to guide you, start with the most quarters which is 20 quarters = 5 dollars and 3 dimes = 30 cents. So 23 coins. Substitute quarters for dimes with 5 dimes = 2 quarters which is the smallest substitution you can do. Subtract 2 quarters and add 5 dimes gives you 18 quarters and 8 dimes which adds to 26 coins. Subtract another 2 quarters and add another 5 dimes and you get 16 quarters and 13 dimes which is 29 coins. Problem solved, in your head, without algebra faster than it takes to write down the algebra equations. Edit 1 day later: I asked my 7 y/o grandson how many quarters and dimes there are in $5.30 and he instantly said 20 quarters and 3 dimes. I then asked him to solve for 29 coins and he lost interest. He's autistic, and can already do basic algebra, so I figure he would get it if he hadn't lost interest.

The answer to this question the way it is actually written is 29. If you want to know how many are dimes and how many are quarters you should have asked that.

C 4.00 dollars in quarters is 16 1.30 in dimes is 13 however 20 quarters and 3 works also but doesn't fit the requirements

Of course through trial error and arithmetic one could solve this in their head. However, it is more fun, elegant, and challenging to come up with an equation. That’s how students today are taught math. They are given a scenario and they create the equation or function not just calculate.

@gavindeane3670

This is an odd one to present as multiple choice. We can immediately rule out a and d because an odd number of quarters means the total would have to end in 5 not 0. So there are just two options to check. b does not add up to $5.30. c does, so that's the answer. What's the reason for presenting multiple choice answers here? Why not leave them out, so that the simultaneous equations approach that you're teaching in the video is actually relevant to the question?

29 coins, distribute with 10s and 25s , where 10 of 10s make one and 4 of 25s makes same one then 16 of 25s and 13 of 10s makes total 5.30, Algebra wise X+Y = 29 and 10x+ 25y= 5.30 , this thing and then x= 29-y , didn't come to my mind, else am aware of it, perhaps solved it any way for right answer so didn't put algebric emphasis at all, it was not even there in mind, and didn't try to think around it to even recall or try from scratch 💀😂✌
