As for the past 40 years, in the past NK helped China a great deal to stabilise economically (remember that it once was the rich Korea), and China always felt indebted since then. They weren't sitting on their asses, but they were supportive. That changed. It's a shame they want to nominate Trump for the Nobel price junk.

I'm sure that when China saw THAAD showing up in SKorea that it was the start of their chickens coming home to roost. I say this because China's toad Jiang Zemin was responsible for getting NKorea's nuclear program started. If China wanted NKorea without nuclear weapons, they would made sure of that long before Xi arrived. But then when Trump came along and started sanctioning Chinese companies doing business with NKorea, suggested that more missile defenses could be on the way completely surrounding both NKorea and China, and suggested that both Japan and SKorea be armed with their own nuclear deterrence, China thought that was the last straw and realized that Kim's nuclear toys had to be put down.

Spot-on. This, I think, is the real goal of all of this. Kim will get propped up by China, in exchange for getting the United States out of Asia, even if it means liberalization of North Korea and the risk of internal revolt - however small. Remember, the North Korean people are largely brainwashed from birth to see Kim and his family as living gods. If Kim told them that dirt was bread, they'd eat it and compliment the baker. Likewise, if Kim told them that he "won" the Korean War and "defeated" the United States, that would only further cement him as a god-hero in their minds. And, Kim could do all this without significantly changing the day-to-day lives of the average North Korean. Granted, in perhaps 20 years, there's a risk of revolt - and an equal risk that Kim will grow complacent and China can replace him with "their man" (or woman) - but, in the short term, this could be China's way to try and get the United States out of East Asia.

The North Koreans simply figured they could take advantage of the current administration with it's decimated diplomatic staff and incompetent leadership. Here's the plan in a nutshell: 1. Conduct way more tests than usual, get everyones attention and make it a constant topic on the news 2. Invite Trump to a summit and raise the prospect of a deal leading to complete de-nuclearisation 3. Make some seemingly big concession right away to hook Trump on the idea that he's already succeeding 4. Wait for the narcicist in chief to jump into the spotlight, prematurely declare victory and take the credit 5. Later only agree to very light restrictions that don't really diminish your nuclear capabilities at all 6. Watch Trump desperately try to oversell the deal in order to save face We are currently well within step 4. The best case scenario for NK would be to dupe Trump into effectively recognising their nuclear weapons programm. The worst case is that Kim only gets his photo-op with the President of the United States, thus giving him and his regime more international legitimacy. Either way it's already a win-win situation for North Korea.

For instance he never once mentioned foreign sanctions on North Korea and the punitive actions the international community took against them after they broke their previous agreements. These are both pretty important to the issue at large.

Plus all the efforts and talks made by the South Korean Government (S Korea now just elected a President who is pro talks with the North) was conveniently left out, which really was the gateway to all the recent actions of North Korea. Obviously, that omission makes it easier to tell a more fear mongering pessimistic view of the current state of affairs. The video show's nothing new nor anything all sides of the party weren't already aware of. Wasted 8 mins of my time watching this.

Yes, it's easy to see the recent actions of the North as the usual routine of tension > talks > foreign aid > repeat. Again, all parties are very well aware of that history. Ask any S Korean and it's old story. But there are important differences that wasn't told, which is my gripe. First, Trump and UN's stronger than ever stance on the North forced the Chinese to participate and put a lot of pressure on the North - key being China's stronger than ever sanctions and pressure albeit unwillingly. Second, the newly elected pro-talks government of the South lead by president Moon took a different approach than the previous government that was hard against the North, which previously simply echo'ed the continued US sanctions and pressure tactics. The South worked hard before and after the Olympics to start talks and also mediate between the hard stance of Trump and the likewise North (no, the North didn't just turn on the charm). The biggest fear of the North is repeating what happened in Lybia and Iraq - namely, dictators being eliminated the moment they cave in to UN/US's demands. Likely, the South somehow convinced the North that the situation in the Korean peninsula is different and that the South (with close ties with the US) will firmly guarantee the safety of Kim's regime. As a result the North actually has closed one of their major nuclear plants willingly on their own. They have done similar actions before, but it was only when they were ordered to do so, seeking foreign aid (more show than substance). This time they proactively showed they are willing to change even before any talks took place. Also, Trump is a key factor. Yes, he was the one who started off with a hard stance against the North (remember Pence's cringe worthy actions during the Olympics?), but at the same time both Koreas know that now is probably the best opportunity to reach a radically different/unprecedented agreement between the North and US (and the South) - Trump's spontaneous and unpredictable character being a key factor. I'm sure there's much more behinds the scenes that's going on, but I do find these quite significant and are the reasons why we can't be too dismissive of the current state of affairs just yet.

Forgot to add that the South are even willing to promote (more like handing over) Trump's Nobel Peace Prize as part of bringing him to the table.
