Simon James I was going to go baritone, but after seeing this I prefer the real uke sound of the tenor. I can always change the strings and tune it like a guitar/bari if I want later.
The tenor I think sounds better as far as like Hawaiian Music or spanish, But I think the Baritone might sound better with Rock Ballads, and some pop tunes. I play guitar, Tenor and baritone Uke, I play songs that I've written for the guitar on my Tenor Uke and I Love both sounds and then I find that the Baritone Uke even though it's tuned like a guitar, it's not a guitar, it still has a more mellow sound just like the tenor only deeper in tone, so it can be a little confusing, I also notice that the deeper sound of the guitar tuning is better for your voice when it comes to singing. But I think when it comes to being mellow, rhythmic and more creative, The Tenor is very special, it sounds good with everything and anything.
These are the best sounding ukuleles I have ever heard. Really beautiful Wish I could afford it but in the middle of raising three kids in California. Someday....
You don't have to get an expensive one and you can learn even if its five minutes at a time. You never know your kids might pick it uo too. Do it, you won't regret it. There are tons of simple songs like Let it be by the Beatles.

Just what I needed to hear to decide wether I'll get a tenor or a baritone! And although I appreciated both songs played so wonderfully well by Mr Hussey, I prefered the baritone sound. Thanks a lot for this beautiful song and playing!

Kimo, you are an outstanding uke player, and this style of playing is so unique! Now I have to decide on whether to get a tenor and sometimes tune it low, or get a baritone because I will know how to play it from guitar, although the sound is less special to me.
Beautiful playing. Beautiful instruments. I really appreciate that as I have just bought a baritone. I cannot afford a Devine instrument but they are awesome. Some say the baritone sounds like a guitar but I do not think it does. It has its own unique sound. Thank you.
Definitely prefer the tone of a tenor, as it sounds more like what I expect a ukulele to sound like, but much stronger than a soprano. Love all three though. Of course these are all extremely HIGH quality instruments played by a master player, so your mileage may vary when it comes to your own instrument.

I love the sound of the baritone, so warm and calming, but I have to agree with the other comments. The tenor just transports you to a tropical island in Hawaii, It's the way a uke should sound.
would a baritone uke be good for someone who wants to play play more guitar-like tunes (if that makes sense) but has hands too small and weak for an actual guitar? I already play a soprano uke, I just can't take myself seriously while singing along with it because of how high pitched both my voice and the instrument is. Sounds a little over exposed if you know what I mean
+Emma Gannon Get yourself a classical guitar. Yamaha models are pretty good and can be bought for about the same amount as a high quality ukulele. Just like ukes, classical guitars use nylon strings so they have low string tension. Classical guitars are also much lighter than steel string due to the minimum amount of hardware needed.
i have the same question. i have a guitar, but am disabled from playing it, so was wondering if a baritone uke would be the decent type to get. +Emma Ganon, did you ever purchase a uke + how do you find it?
Beautiful playing, bossa nova is gorgeous on strings, especially when played by a truly talented musician like yourself. Personally, i feel the tenor ukulele has a more distinctive tone and sound then the baritone. The baritone seemed to have a similar tone to a nylon string "mini" guitar intended for travel gigs, rather than sounding truly distinctive. You could replace a nylon guitar in a studio/live performance with a baritone ukulele in a pinch (although that would be a pretty weird pinch to be in) whereas a tenor ukulele would bring an entirely new feel to the song, possibly even an undesirable feel due to its incredibly unique, small body tone.
So is it a baritone ukulele or a guitarlele , since it has six strings it just seems to me as being a quarter size guitar, now if it had four strings I would say it was an equal match fight but just watching kimo take the smaller one and make the song sound that great just amazes me ! 🤗
