Very nice way of putting it. I have a baritone ukulele and the sound is beautiful but it’s basically like a 4 string guitar - good for folk music and open tunings.
Wow, when you listen to them right next to each other you can really hear what a huge difference there is! I think I personally prefer the deeper sound of the baritone - thanks for commenting this, it was helpful 😊
In my experience:The Tenor (or Soprano/concert) uke is standard for those hawaiian progressions and alot of pop improvisation, but the baritone is more standard for the rest.
The baritone is like a guitar without the two low strings so it's in fact simpler guitar shapes that you gonna use. The normal ukuleles are what they are. If you want to try an hybrid try the guitalele it will help you understand the chord shapes and the chord transpositions that you can use between the two.
My ukulele is a baritone - not as many instructional videos to be found for bari. Would love it if you started making baritone videos, or including bari in videos made for soprano/concert/tenor!
Annely Thayer, I agree. I have a baritone tuned gCEA but I find the string tension is higher than I like. I also have one tuned DGBE but there are few lessons available for it online . I have considered tuning one GCEA but an octave lower by using the EADG strings from a classical set and tuning them up to GCEA.

The huge difference is you can't use your standard ukulele chords on a baritone. You have to use guitar chords. I'd love to have a baritone, but don't want to re-learn everything.
That's sheer ignorance you hace to give a different name to chord shapes , if you know the circle of the fifths , and you should if you are a musician , it's really easy :if you want to play a D you play you standard G shape.If you are learning a tenor guitar tuned in fifths you relearn everything , and even so , your right hand does the same job, so basically what you wrote is FAKE NEWS
Dude you ain't paying attention! the baritone is still ukulele: unless you play everything in one key, the chords are the same, just different names on the baritone. for ex. Your G becomes a D and your f becomes a C. Do this: Get yourself a baritone and (1) just play what you already know, then (2) Look at a Baritone chord book and switch the chords as needed and you'll see it's still ukulele and even easier to play than the others.

I've never played one so I've got to figure out what I'm going to get. I play guitar and bass for 50 years plus, and I found a tenor, I just love looking at it, so it's tough. I do like the deeper tones..
@@tommaynard_keyoftreeband If you already play guitar, the DGBE will be seamless … I have begun playing Guitalele, which is ADGCEA … those two extra strings, closer together, finger shapes … these have been challenging. I received my Daddy’s guitar when he passed 01 March 2023, so I bought a special capo that I will not move and I play his guitar like a ukulele/guitalele ((on my channel, the song I wrote is “Daddy’s Song”)). 💚
Wish you would do a video comparing Baritones tuned GCEA vs regular Baritone tuning. I have a Baritone tuned GCEA with low G custom Living Water strings. Lowered the action for more comfort. Aquila has some GCEA Baritone custom strings too. I play with a Uke group and can use the same music sheets. It sounds like a mellow tenor. The tone fits my voice. Some Uke makers are doing a Super Tenor that is somewhat similar. I like my set up and don't see any disadvantages. Don't understand why more folks don't do this? You can even experiment with a variety of strings to get a more unique sound.

At least, as some other guys stated, the Baritone ukulele seems to be a "kids" guitar missing the two lower strings. So also the sound is more like an acustic guitar. The other ukuleles like the Tenor ukulele can also be plaied like a guitar, but it will sound like a guitar with a capo on the 5th fret. But additinally they are normally in a "High G" tuning, which menads you will have also a thin string on the 4th string, which enables the G to be one octave higher then expected from an guitar with a capo on the 5th fret. But the octaved G will make a big difference in the sound compared to a normal guitar (in my opinion) with a capo on the 5th fret. I am new to ukuleles, but have lots of electric guitars, so I yesterday decided to buy a used Flight Pathfinder electric ukulele. But these electric Tenor ukuleles have the downside to have a low G tuning, which will result in a baritone ukulele with a capo on the 5th fret. So, when it arrives I will try to use the strings 4=0.28mm(11), 3=0.43mm(17), 2=0.33mm(13), 1=0.25mm(10) instead of the original configuration (4=0.66mm(26), 3=0.43mm(17), 2=0.33mm(13), 1=0.25mm(10)). this should enable me to get the Hawaii ukulele sounf from an electric ukulele by still having the perfect string tension.
Yes you can!! I used to play the guitar and you can easily learn the Uke in no time seriously, speaking out of experience :) But you probably already learned it by now!
Today is a big day for me. I bit the bullet and restrung my Kala Baritone. GCEA, nothing fancy, used Aquila Lava strings and followed an online video. My advise, buy a winder before you do it, they are under $10.
I have 2 baritones and 3 tenors. The tenors are collecting dust, and I am shopping online for another baritone. Not going to learn another way to chord, so I will give my tenors away and concentrate on baritones. I just love the sound.
"The tuning is different for the baritone". I hate this simplistic description scaring people away, myself included at first. The "tuning" of this instrument is not only the same, but EXACTLY the same, just lowered in pitch by a 5th on the major scale (or is it a 4th up?) EVERY CHORD SHAPE YOU LEARN ON UKE WORKS ON BARITONE. So your C is now a G. Your D is now an A, etc. Why hasn't the baritone uke taken off? Simple - Fear that all your finger memorization is useless, based on instruction people don't understand. No it's not at all, and teachers make this sound complicated by showing the notes of the open strings are different. IT'S THE SAME RELATIVE STRING TO STRING TUNING, PERIOD. Jeez, this is frustrating.
Not really unless Ukulele is what you want to play, actually the baritone uke mentioned in this video is a good starting point for the other Ukes. But if you're interested in playing guitar, get a thinner body guitar like Yamaha brand. I play both Uke and guitar; playing ukulele doesn't help me play guitar better, that is a myth. 4 strings vs 6 strings is a good stretch of a difference
Should you use the same chord shapes and play a piece the same as on say a concert uke? Or transpose 4 down and use that chordshapes? I don't own a baritone but this is really interesting stuff.
