I remember when my father put indoor plumbing into my grandparents' old farmhouse next door, in about 1954 (not in Des Plaines). My grandfather kept the privy next to the tractor shed, because he felt ambiguous about the idea of bowel movements in the house. That privy, of course, had the Sears catalogs, at some times, corncobs at other times.
