Paint this. Watercolor techniques of wet into wet and scumbling are key to creating a good watercolor painting. This how-to step by step painting video is great for watercolor beginners and novices alike. All of us have to start somewhere. My journey started over 30 years ago and after a successful career (I have sold over 1800 paintings) I am enjoying sharing with other eager artists what I have learned. In this video I clearly demonstrate 3 of the most important watercolor methods. If artists can develop these skills alone, their work will advance rapidly. I start off showing how I use a simple pencil sketch to plan my painting of Zion National Park. Then jump into an easy wet into wet sky showing how to let the pigments blend on the paper instead of the palette. As the painting develops I will teach you about "blocking in" the first washes, then "scumbling" to create texture. While I work I share knowledge and tips about how YOU can reach higher levels of skill through "brush mileage" and practice. And of course I describe all the materials and tools I personally use from brushes and paints to palettes and paper. Thanks for watching. If you enjoy this painting please subscribe to my channel and share it with your friends.

There are infinite ways to approach watercolor painting, in my opinion, your style is the best. Thank you for an informative and well-thought-out video.

It is always a pleasure to see your work! As someone who is disabled and can’t get to all the beautiful locations anymore I have to rely on photos or typically sit in an area that isn’t the best view but try to make the best out of it even if it is all made up with the exception of basic elements. Your work is a treasure for experienced as well as new wc students. Thank you. Learning to do wc or any other medium is something that anyone can learn if they have the drive and desire to do so. Another point that I wanted to mention is that some( us😂) artists will be extreme detailists, nothing wrong with it at all but sometimes the work, hours entailed in accomplishing those works of art are not able to be sold. It is a fact as artists that we know. But if one is able to accomplish the hint of those details, save time and sell them then that is the difference. With most of my family and myself those paintings end up with our family and we understand that. Your work is gorgeous Thank you for not fearing to tell new ones about using the Phalo family and staining pigments as they are truly the base of transparent watercolor. 😊

Thanks for sharing. I don't think the negative painting is tedious. I'd rather have the full, unedited video.

Every time I come back to your instruction Roland, you inspire and encourage me on my own watercolour journey. This time proved so enjoyable, especially the rounding and blending you demonstrated to get a true dimension of light, shadow, and reflection. Watching how you accomplish this is artistic poetry! For a time I am going to practice your style in monochrome, perhaps with the addition of another hue, until I feel confident enough to broaden my palette. I have become bogged down in muddy results which have been somewhat restricting of late. Enjoy your autumn, family, and friendships. Thank you for just being you! Kind regards Keith Fey, South Africa.

So happy to see you painting! I really enjoy your style very much. The negative painting gives so much life to those darkened areas and great flow. And I haven’t found a better way to do the clouds then the way you teach how to do them. Thank you again.

So inspiring for me. I started painting a few months ago. Though I am only in my 20s, I spent my whole life telling myself I wasn't talented enough to try. I wanted to paint some landscapes from places in Utah I visited and found your work and WOW! I hope someday to have the skill you have, being able to sell. Your videos are so helpful, thanks for putting these up for us to learn!

Really glad to watch a new video uploaded and I like how you explain carefully steps with accurate tools/brushes and the way you mix colors toguether at a good motion in order to follow peacefully with our eyes as I am a beginner in watercolour ! Did you let all dry the sky before adding the blue color for clouds or it's still wet on wet ? This is always sensitive part for me or maybe I stress out too much, focus is one thing... I use at the moment only CP Montval Canson papers. By the way, I tried to send a PM in FB and Insta but I know you are busy with the artistic schedule... Anyway, I will have hopefully my first individual exhibition so it's a big deal for me to improve more. Take care of yourself ☘️

hi Dan. I don't add new paint. I just wipe out the mixing wells so they are clean. Thanks for asking.

The angle is adjustable and I do change it frequently if I'm not filming. But ordinarily about 30 degrees or less.
