Kinetic RAF Harrier GR.3 in 1/48 scale model kit by The Inner Nerd.
Time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit as shown by The Inner Nerd. This video delivers in a tutorial style, the skills and knowledge needed to assemble, paint and weather a small scale kit, using Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit as a basis of the video. The tools I use can be considered professional and this video is about the skills of basic modelling using the correct tools that make the job easier. This must not be confused with a starter set challenge where only the basic tools in the set are to be used.

Disclaimer: Most of the products I use in my videos such as AK Interactive products, AnyZ detailing products & VMS Supplies were sent to me for free, but with no obligations to promote them. The rest are purchased with my own money and built up throughout the years I've been making models on this channel. The Oxted model Centre are also my Patreon supporters. Being truthful about the products I use and only promoting ones I believe are good enough to use is one of the foundations of this channel. Statements I make are entirely my own and I have not been influenced to promote one product over the other. I cannot be bought and I stand by this to deliver you useful and informative videos.
This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit is to carefully read the instructions and assemble, using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the the parts fit accurately and align as intended, this is the easiest way of speeding up the build.
To paint the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit it is best to use an airbrush. This video is designed to cover the airbrush basics so that you can see the thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with AK Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very important so I will explain how to do that using the correct thinners for each paint type.
Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more intense product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit details.
The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products as well as artists oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by MIG Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering process using an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. Here I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal those in I use a clear acrylic coat from VMS Matte varnish. Further and more detailed weathering follows using artist oil paints which enable me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it a more aged, used and weathered effect. The VMS matte clearcoat varnish is airbrushed onto the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit. This matte varnish will help the weathering process as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage/landing gear.
Final assembly of the Kinetic RAF Harrier Gr.3 in 1/48 scale model kit is completed using VMS super glue. All of the final small parts and lights are added onto the model kit to complete the model build.

Hey gang and welcome back to my return to modelling on RU-vid! Hope you enjoy the video, there are a few glitches in the video for some unknown reason, so please don’t go out buying a new device (unless it’s a good to use excuse of course ;)) The model stand is available on my website www.theinnernerd.com and is completely made by me. The money made from it helps support the channel and keep the videos rolling, maybe even full-time one day… lets see. Otherwise, have a great Christmas/break if you don’t celebrate it and see you next year, Matt :)

It has been a journey watching your videos over the years. You can see how your skills have developed into producing an extremely nice looking model. Also the production of the videos themselves have become very nicely done. Your commentary has added a great value to the educational aspects of the techniques you employ. The music is not overwhelming and just a nice background. The camera work and lighting are some of the best to be scene on the net for modeling videos. Even my 4 year old grandson enjoys your videos. Thank you for all your hard work that you put into them. I will be ordering one of your stands after the holidays to help support your channel.

Thank you for following me for so long! I think I’m roughly where I want to be in terms of the video making and it makes me happy to see that viewers can see the development also. I’m going to keep the calm and collected feel to the videos moving forward, ASMR meets modelling I guess haha. Thank you for the comment, this is what keeps me motivated to improve with each build, both in terms of the model, but it’s presentation too. Thanks again and have a great Christmas also :)

Couple of minor points regarding the harness straps: On ejection the pilot eventually separates from the seat, whilst generally finding it preferable to remain attached to the parachute. In the real thing this is achieved by a catch mechanism which essentially lets go of the harness at a determined point. The upshot is that the waist straps should be inside rather outside the seat pan. Similarly the leg restraint lines that you added are "plugged in" via the pilot's leg straps on boarding. The free ends were generally draped over the control column on exiting the aircraft. Typically, these lines are blue. Really enjoyed the video and various top modelling tips. Thanks! PS/ Some more rivet counting from me: * The engine access panels are actually the 4 *forward* of the wing and these hinge and prop independently. What you refer to as access panels are in fact an aerodynamic fairing. Iirc, the small panels on the fairing allow access to the lifting points. * The Pegasus engine is a topic in its own right (The Andrew Dow book is great if you're interested) and an important aspect is that it effectively has a separate front and rear section (that rotate internally in opposite directions). The front is the fan section and thus blows relatively cold air out of the forward nozzles. The rear is the exhaust of the turbine section and is MUCH hotter. Heat staining effects differ accordingly. * The engine has its own starter/aux power unit (minimising the need for ground support equipment) that intakes and exhausts through those rectangular ducts on the engine access panels. Left hand is exhaust, right (with the mesh) is the inlet. The exhaust one gets quite mucky. * The red line on the wing root highlights the ground fire extinguisher point for the hot end of the engine. If flames appear during start, the ground crew poke the end of their extinguisher lance into the hole in the vain hope of preventing an unscheduled barbeque (aka "business meeting" nowadays apparently). The red box should surround the hole.
@TheInnerNerd

Thanks for the insight. I would never have known this unless if have worked on the actual aircraft. I’m just a modeller and have no aviation background whatsoever, the art of modelling is what I like and there are always some inaccuracies with all my builds. Oh well… Thanks again and thanks for watching :)

Hi, a superb build! The colour texture and 'feel' of the GR3 has been captured beautifully. The only thing (and I hate to say it) is that the forward nozzles were powered from the 'cold' compressor side of the Pegasus engine, so was unaffected by hot efflux. They were always in normal paint finish. The 'hot' turbine fed rear nozzles were very much heat affected and so would have looked as your patina effect. The 'puffer ducts' were also fed from the hot side of the ECU and similarly coloured as the aft nozzles. Your representation certainly brought back many memories. Thank-you.

Fair comment - you should use source images when researching paint and finish. The front nozzles if not painted, would have been natural steel finish rather than having a heat burnished effect. My recollection of 4 Sqn Harrier GR3 aircraft from the early 80's were front nozzles painted green, aft turbine powered nozzles very heat burnished. In the hover, there is no cooling airflow, so things got very hot. The aft fuselage from the heat shields was very, very sooty and oily - often it was impossible to read the tail number - hence we relied on the fin and outrigger idents. The back third of the GR3 was probably the dirtiest airframe I ever worked on!

@@eddiebirdie1545 I have to now😁. You really take this to the next level. I know I need to start simple and just stick to some basic principles. Which for me, having never done this, read instructions completely, separate parts and sand any residual connecting “tags”, go slowly. Amy other advice or recommended brands to start with?
@eddiebirdie1545
@eddiebirdie1545 2 года назад
Airfix spitfire starter set or any other starter set, nail file and something to cut parts off the frames that's all you need to start.

Remember these as a kid dogfighting over my house in Herefordshire, by far my favourite mark of Harrier so seeing you build this and the final reveal has bough back a lot of memories, so thank you, a truly excellent build.....oh and I've ordered your 'Third Hand' as I have got back into building aircraft recently after having a SciFi period of modelling.

What a superb result. I'm not really a Harrier fan but I did enjoy following along. As has been said, the production is just right. As well as informative and inspirational, I actually found it a very calming and restful video - a bit like being in a modelling spa! In these troubled times I like to lose myself in modelling, which often means losing myself in someone else's build! I also note that you use several of products that I use - that Perfect Plastic Putty is a particular favourite of mine. Anyway, thanks for posting this and a Happy New Year (of modelling). 🙂

Thank you, I'm aiming for a calm and informative video approach. I'm glad that is working out for far :) Modelling should be a calm and safe space where we can get away from everything and focus only on the task in hand, even if it that is watching rather than doing lol. PPP is great filler, I have tried many and this is bar far the most user friendly. Thank you for watching and Happy New Year to you also :)

Fantastic work! One of the best harrier builds I’ve seen on YT. Very refreshing to see someone actually get the nozzles painted correctly. That’s one of the areas I consistently see many modellers get wrong, for some reason.

Don't think they are correct, front nozzles are cold so never burn tarnish. Just look at many pictures, they tend to get painted body colour. I have three Harriers on the go, all long term projects (like 3 years still not finished, biggest is the Hobby Boss, trying to animate all the moving parts).
@mikemontgomery2654
@mikemontgomery2654 2 года назад
@@flybobbie1449 Even that depends on the Harrier model. The original versions were unpainted metal. The newer Harriers (BAE/McDD) had the cold nozzles painted.

All harriers +spairs engines sold to USA for 2 million pounds yes you didn't misread that 2m why bc they wanted us to buy their F35s now revised order down to 48 aircraft from over 150 not enough to even fill 1 carrier and no cats on them what a waste of tax payers money should have just upgraded the harriers we had or made a super harrier
