Where can you get a combination of amateur historical investigation, with hard sci-fi? Here, that's where.
In this second part of our Cumbrian Neolithic Adventure, we're looking at 3 significant henges, south of Penrith (The Penrith Henges). First off, it's the ridiculously named, King Arthur's Round Table, followed by Little Round Table and then the mighty Mayburgh Henge.
We consider the purposes of these unusual structures and discuss the damage done to them over the last 3 centuries - before departing in a hurry when something nasty emerges from the Time Tunnel.
Stay tuned for the third and final part of this trilogy, which we'll get to soon - unless the aliens get to us first.

Glad you enjoyed it again! I took a call from a customer whilst out filming this one, and looking back, I suspect that was the beginning of the end for me with that business!

Where else on RU-vid would you see content like this? Unique approach to vlogging and I’m sure everyone will be doing it like this soon

Thanks, but we doubt it. Takes a lot of effort for a handful of views!

Glad you enjoyed it - we may be encountering some more King Arthur related mumbo jumbo soon, so stay tuned!

This is really quite amazing stuff you are doing - I'm really enjoying it! I wasn't aware of any of these henges, although I stayed in Penrith only a short while ago. It just shows how chock full this country is of such historic landmarks.

Thank you Matthias - glad you are enjoying it and thanks for the positive feedback. Penrith is probably better known for the Roman activity around it, but the area seems to have been busy in the Neolithic and Bronze ages too. If you stay in Penrith again, do check these henges out - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Great stuff! That's a really interesting site and looks like you had a nice day for it. ..and yet what 8-bit peril you put yourself in to bring us these videos! I may have mentioned before but I am reminded of Robert John Langdon's "Prehistoric Britain" channel with the talk of rivers and their proximity to henges . Stonehenge and Avebury of course being two notable examples, with the Avon and Kennet respectively. The conclusions he has arrived at go completely against any kind of archaeological consensus and revolve around water tables being much higher in the late Neolithic, such that these sites were more like island trading posts, and the ditches were in fact more like man made canals. I suspect most would disregard his thinking as rather fanciful but you and he seem to be of a similar opinion that these sites very likely had a more practical purpose (e.g. trade) rather than the something ritualistic, which is the standard fallback of archaeologists / historians. I found the Penmaenmawr site in Wales which I visited in April interesting because of the combination of a stone axe quarry and some stone circles. Given that there had been evidence of these stone axes found some distance away (as far as Cornwall I believe) it did suggest people would have travelled significant distances to obtain these presumably high quality axe heads, and that the availability of that particular type of stone for quarrying was the reason for choosing the site of the stone circles. Of course you could come up with a narrative that the axes were considered sacred and the nearby stone circles were some ritual site for blessing them or some such... but it seems just as plausible they were just practical sites of trade, a Neolithic showroom if you will, where the axe makers' wares could be shown off in flashy surroundings, to increase the "price" they could get for them. The Apple stores of their day perhaps?

Thank you - really appreciate your feedback and considered comments. You lift us up when our morale is running low! It’s an intoxicating idea to think of the rivers being used to connect sites and move goods. The rivers would have been different then and I guess there would have been a lot more marshland. It seems entirely likely that different areas would specialise in different goods and then look to distribute them over a wider area. These 3 henges are right next to the river and it’s easy to imagine the progression from a Neolithic version of Pound Land at the Little Round Table, to Marks and Spencer in King Arthur’s Round Table and then onto a Neolithic John Lewis at Mayburgh Henge - looking down on them all!

@@WC21UKProductionsLtd I like that you don't necessarily assume religion has been a permanent feature of society throughout human history but snobbery and keeping up with the Joneses, however... My favourite news headline of all time is (from 2015) "Pound Land buys the 99p Store: not much change expected."

Thinking about it, pretty sure the 2 have been intrinsically linked throughout the entire existence of mankind! I must checkout the Prehistoric Britain channel. Have had a big clear out recently and elected to hide my subscriptions moving forward, as everyone else seems to do. I was drowning in wild camping channels that I never watched, so I have room for some new subscriptions. I've just noticed that I used, 'moving forward' above. A vestigial corporate expression from bygone days...
