King Arthur's Celts and the Anglo-Saxon Invasion of Britain

This is a VR to Alice Roberts' recent BBC documentary.
I address the question of King Arthur, whom I argue is more important as a literary and legendary figure than as a historical one, then I address the question of Britain and the Anglo-Saxon invasions of the 5th century and argue that they cannot have been peaceful and that recent studies have not properly distinguished the DNA of Anglo-Saxons from that of Brythonic Celts. Finally I return to the figure of Arthur as a returning hero, and stress the importance of this perennial archetype as a esoteric representation of a spiritual awakening of the people.
To clarify, what I do not say clearly in the film: Barbarossa, Charlemagne , King Arthur, King Harold Godwinsson and other European kings whose return from the grave has been prophesied are regional variants of an ancient legendary motif of the perfect king who represents the perfect harmony of earthly power legitimised by transcendent and spiritual principles. This will not be achieved by a king climbing out of his grave, but by a spiritual re-awakening of the European peoples.
CORRECTION: At one point I state that "nobody ever called themselves by that name" (Anglo-Saxon) This is incorrect. I had thought that Anglorum was used more than Anglo-Saxon but I have subsequently learned that there are several ecclesiastical texts in which the English were termed Anglo-Saxon during the Anglo-Saxon period.

Your channel is great, keep doing what your doing 👍. However, I can't believe it took me this long to discover you! Here is a theory for you. Could the historical Arthur, if he existed been a German or of Germanic descent? There is a name, Arnthor (arn = bird (or eagle) + Thor) which looks very similar but I've only seen it mentioned much later in the Domesday Book. During that period there was a king of Gwent, in some sources called Tewdrig, whose name is potentially the Gothic, Theodoric. His father Teithfallt could be Thuidebalth, another Gothic name. Tewdrig is also recorded as having a grandson called Athrwys. Could Tewdrig or an ancestor have been a former Roman army officer who led the resistance to the barbarian invasions? Your thoughts.

Say you were a Romanised Celt(the label Celt is problematic too) and the Romans are leaving. Did the Angles, Saxons and Jutes come to Britain in one big mass. I don't think so. Usually the conquerors don't want to destroy everything because they want a functioning society to rule. When the Normans defeated the Saxons they replaced the ruling class but ordinary people's lives continued as before.

And the Saxon and Celtics couldn’t of been too peaceful, there is a battle site near me, Badon hill in Bath, where the Saxons and Britons fought eachother and the Britons stopped the Saxon advance. Incidentally the man leading the Britons was Romano British, and called Artorius. Local legend has it that this is the Latin version of Arthur and that Arthur was here defending the Britons. It’s a recognised battle site so how can the bbc it was a peaceful transition?

The BBC never claimed it was entirely a peaceful transition. They just repeated the current theories about the Anglo-Saxon settlement that academics no longer believe it was a full-scale genocide or ethnic cleansing as had been previously believed due to sources such as Bede. The current thinking is that there was a lot more communal living than previously thought. Of course, there were still warlords fighting each other on either side for territorial control. But it is misleading to frame it as some kind of genocide by an invading Anglo-Saxon force.

Yea there was nothing peaceful about the AngloSaxon invasion. The Romanized Britons fought a desperate war to hold on to their lands and estates but were eventually forced right out of England into the western fringes and into Wales. Sure there might have been a few who remained under Saxon rule but they would have been quickly assimilated.

"According to modern scholars, the figures found in myths and legends are merely abstract sublimations of historical figures, which have eventually replaced the latter and become myths and fantastic tales. On the contrary, the opposite is true: there are realities of a superior, archetypal order, which are shadowed in various ways by symbols and myths […] Here myth constitutes the primary element and should be regarded as the starting point, while the historical figure or datum is only one of the various contingent and conditioned expressions of the superior order of things." - J. The British People's together in Union constitute an actual multiculture. Separate discreet and geographical disparate cultural (and to a certain extent) genetic population co-operating together. An often forgotten consequence of the creation of the buzzword of multiculturalism is that we lack a widely recognised word for the unity, co-operation and common respect for Tradition that the United people's of Britain or the peoples of Switzerland exhibit. Many would use the word multiculturalism for it and thusly equivocate it with the modern meaning. This kind of language poisoning isn't just bad, it is double-plus ungood.

Interestingly, we have a quite similar myth in Denmark. Although not a king, the viking-like character of Holger Danske is rumored to be slumbering somewhere, only to be awakened when the land is in dire need. In the 20th century some people wanted to bring some more life to this myth, so they literally created a big bronze statue of Holger, which they placed in the dungeons beneath Kronborg, giving a sense that our mythical hero could *literally* awaken. But to tie this to your point; his name (Danske /// The Dane) is an embodiment of the people, and in a metaphorical sense it's a myth about the people awakening to protect the land, just as you pointed out about the myth about King Arthur.

Genetics of Anglo-Saxons and Britons is kind of a moot point. They were genetic siblings, both descendant from an ancient strain of northern Indo-Europeans from whom all northern Celtic and Germanic peoples descend. You couldn't go back in Anglo-Saxon Wessex and point to people with certainty and proclaim Celtic or Germanic ancestry, they already were essentially the same thing even before the Roman period.

we have really nice opera in poland about king arthur called "the adventure of the king arthur" by grażyna bacewicz (possibly based on old celtic legend?) it's enough interesting because we dont have that much compositions reviving ancient myths. i personally loved it as it have really good voice acting especially for giant! synopsis: While King Arthur is banqueting with his knights, a frightened Maiden bursts in and informs about the Giant, a great lover of virgins, ravaging the surrounding countryside. Arthur sets off to defeat him, but being defeated himself, he has to agree to the Giant's conditions: within three days he is to solve a riddle: ''What do all women desire?'', otherwise he will be killed. In the castle, King Arthur has asembled worldly-wise matrons, innocent maidens, charming ladies, slaves and milk-maids to ask their advice. He receives different answers: love, jewellery, children's happiness, a husband, health. A young knight, supported by others, claims that women long for change; Morgana says that such a question is not for women to answer as they keep changing their minds. All the answers are then presented to the Giant by King Arthur. but all turn out to be wrong. The Giant gives the King one more chance: the deadline for solving the riddle will be extended. An old Witch promises to help Arthur in exchange for a young husband. The right answer is: every woman wants to get her own way. Gavein agrees to marry the horrible Witch, who during the wedding night is transformed into a beautiful girl (being under a spell she lives as an old woman for twelve hours and as a young beauty for another twelve).

I was led to believe that we were majority Anglo Saxon. Great video, Tom. Hope you're enjoying living here in Devon. Shame you're up north, otherwise I'd invite you for a pint and conversation.

The legendary King Arthur was ARTHWYS AP MEURIG AP TEWDRIG AP TEITHFALT from Glamorgan, South Wales and there was one more King Arthur who lived 120 years earlier and he was of the same lineage ! This Arthur´s father was MAGNUS MAXIMUS (Macsen Wledig!) Both, he and his son Andragatius (King Arthur I ) fought the Romans in Britain and defeated them. Arthur II fought the Saxons in Britain.

Here I am touring England and Survive the Jive releases a new video. What luck, I say! The areas you showcased in this video looked amazing as well; I'd love to visit them myself. The plan for me is to return to England again soon and I'll be spending several months here. During that time I will have many opportunities to explore and to learn more of the land.

Very good. Surprised you didnt bring up the two Welsh kings called Arthur. Given that the Welsh were the occupants of both Wales and England prior to the late 5th century. All too easy to place him in the 'sleeping king under the hill' myth with Barbarossa and Charlemagne. Didnt help when Glastonbury Abbey claimed to have discovered his grave in the 12th century (in order to draw pilgrims). No arguing with the fact that 'Morte d'Arthur was medieval Eng Lit's interpretation from the French. Only that the French got it from Geoffrey of Monmouth a century before, who claimed it was from an 'ancient' Celtic manuscript, and the Welsh monk Nennius 300 years before that is the first to mention Arthur - though as a Saxon-battling warrior chieftan rather than king. There was an Arthwyr of Gwent from 615-630 AD who fits the bill. However all the round table/chalice-chasing stuff which defines our idea of Arthur was added 600 years later.

In my opinion, Athur embodies the resistance force of the British people. It was this strength that allowed them to stand up against Philip II, Napoleon and Adolf Hitler. This same force makes them rise today against the burden of the European Union and the migratory invasion. In this sense, Arthur has come back every time his people need him and he will continue to do so.

Reformed Anti-semite Jesus as described in Mark's gospel is a compilation of Mithras, Asclepius, the god of healing and medicine. The birth narratives of Matthew and Luke are usually seen by secular historians as legends designed to fulfill Jewish expectations about the Messiah. I remember hearing a-bit about a claimed historical origin of Arthur while reading my Warhammer Ancient Battles PDFs (Warhammer Fantasy system but historical), the “Age of Arthur” book says he’s probably based on a Romano-British leader (it’s about the fall of Romano-Britain), It’s fascinating stuff, and I never thought of the full importance of Arthur’s myth, only how far it spread and effects fantasy to this day (insert joke about my Caster Medea PFP here lol).

After reading the entire comment section, I would advise a whole lotta folks to throw out old materials concerning DNA research, older theories on migrations, cultures, etc..There are some lectures that should be removed from public perusal because it is simply passé and the persistence is causing confusion. I give kudos to StJ for trying to correct these misunderstandings.

You can be Irish and have blonde hair, you can be Frisian, Dutch, or Danish and have red hair. A Swede can have Black hair and a Scot can have brown hair and brown eyes. The bloodlines amongst many Celtic and Germanic descended peoples are very close. They descend from the same stock. They would both have these traits independently of each other.

This decided who was going to be in charge that year, and previously the one who was going to perform the ritual stated his "goals" to be achieved within his period of power. It is not the same, but similar. Here (Sibculo, Overijssel, Netherlands) the foundations of a medieval monastery lie on a sand hill. Its founder was a priest named Johan Clemme. This monastery contributed to the foundation and growth of several villages around. The monastery has emptied due to the Reformation. But the story goes that, when danger or storm threatens, Johan Clemme is back on the hill, watching over his people.
