King Britt is one of the best-known and most influential DJ/producers to come out of the Philadelphia music scene. In this Dubspot video interview he discusses his new loop/sample pack project Fragments and how the process for making collections of sounds differs from that of producing complete tracks. While demonstrating how he has designed the Fragments series of sample packs, he also shows the versatility of Ableton Live and explains why he uses Ableton as his performance platform.

I'm really respectfull for artists who don't complicate their job and do it with simple, but really effective techniques.

Well done, +Dubspot, a very professional presentation as well as learning from King Britt's insight and input of his methodology shared to the students about producing loops. I am quite inspired to pursue producing loops out of self-satisfaction in creating loops that will get the listener's attention immediately. I tend to start projects with rhythm first to lay down the groove and use a 8 bar loop as a focal point to hear a track at it's peak. It takes time to put together a professional track, and creating loops is like a sneak peak at a given track, sampling it in order to get the idea behind the track itself. I am impressed and thank you again for this simply amazing video. Cheers!

Nice video. It is really inspiring to watch other artist like him and how the work and how it differs from your own techniques.

I have some questions that no one ever seems to be able to give a straight answer for. In terms of setting out to make and sell your sample packs, where do you start? Like what is and is not legal. For example is it okay to make a pattern with a vst preset and then sell it? Or would it be different if it were hardware? And when it comes to drum samples, what is okay to use, say for using drum samples to make full drum loops?

deffs. Having your hand held for you through the beginning of a track (finding the root samples, writing beat etc) - I understand it in the mixing and mastering stage, but the first few hours of making a track determines everything about it. I don't want to be writing "King Britt's" tracks...

Also, lastly. How would you go about getting on to a site like loopmasters to sell your sample packs? Do they just come to you if you are already some established big name artist, or can you get on there otherwise. It seems like 90% of people are not interested in this kind of sound design, but I am.

I gotta agree. Limiting yourself forces you to use tools in creative ways.

When it comes to making drum loops, what is okay to use as base material for your drum sounds? Like, if you were to use Image-Line Drummaxx or Geist, would it be okay to source drum sounds from that, or does it have to be pure analogue hardware sources. Also, no one ever seems to be able to give any advanced drum synthesis tutorials. I think everyone gets how to make simple kick drums and snares. But how to make more professional quality percussion from straight synthesis?

Ok so.... you made the sample pack how do you actually sell it online???? That would have been about the most helpful tip of all.
