The reformed King Crimson of 1981 emerged as a completely distinct entity from its late '60s/early '70s incarnation. Notably, Adrian Belew (vocals/guitar) and Tony Levin (bass) joined the ranks alongside previous members Bill Bruford (drums) and the leader/founder Robert Fripp (guitar). While the band retained its musical unpredictability, their fresh sound and approach deviated significantly from their original progressive direction. With two albums released under this new lineup (1981's Discipline and Beat), King Crimson embarked on a tour that led to the creation of their first home video, 'The Noise: Live at Fréjus.' Initially recorded in August of '82 at the Arena in France, this video remained largely unseen until its reissue by DGM in 1997. However, it serves as an exceptional visual testament to the '80s-era King Crimson. Now available both as a full concert and as individual clips exclusively on the official King Crimson RU-vid channel.

I think something worth noting is that introduction to Indiscipline that Bill handles solo was done by three drummers on the last tour. Definitely not slagging on Pat, Jeremy, or Gavin, as they were wonderful and the interplay between them was great and added so much, but the aplomb with which Bill pulls this off is nothing short of astounding.

I am 62 years old, I live in a small town in Argentina. I had the privilege of knowing the extraordinary music of King Crimson, I knew nothing about them until the '80s. For me, and from what I felt that time, this is the most impressive line-up of this band. April, 23rd, 2024.

When I was listening to King Crimson for the first time I found this line up weird and I said to myself ´´This is not the essence of KC´´ later on to have listened to all KC albums I got to know that this has been one of my favourites line up! I was there. What the video doesn't capture was the sheer atmosphere of it, especially at the beginning. It was in a baking hot Roman amphitheatre and the air was so thick and hot you could almost cut it. When that electronic back beat just cut in at the start it was like a bolt of lightning. Easily the most atmospheric start to a gig I've ever seen. KC were supporting Roxy Music who were pretty damn good as well. Great night, I'll never forget.

When you have multiple musicians who are incredibly talented, the risk of having them try to outdo one another is high. However when you get the right kind of musicians who don't try and hog the spotlight it's a rare and magical thing to see. This is a perfect example of talent not outshining one another.

I keep coming back to comment, as this is just such a wonderful gift to us. I remember the excitement when KC came back on the scene in the '80s. I was a younger fan, having discovered ITCOCK and following works during the hiatus, and was so stoked to get to be part of the initial fandom of this new incarnation. As I watch this performance it comes back how RF, then 36, seemed to me so much the elder rock statesman but now looks so young to my eyes that his genius seems almost precocious. Time is alternatively relative, fixed, and illusory, all in the same moment. This is part of the power of music.

Being a drummer I had to meet Bruford, it just so happened that in 2007 he was giving limited engagement drum tutorials , met him in Toronto, what an absolute humble genius. How he spoke of percussion only elevated my playing until I met Danny a year later in a small bar in Detroit touring with Volto! One would not think that he would let just anyone sit next to him while he had his arms dipped in a bucket of ice water, we talked everything from the love of Lamborghinis, ( he had one) to UFO’s , basketball , to the need to stay humble. People may talk negatively about Tool, but they are without a doubt the greatest rock band of all time.

60 here… saw KC around ‘84, give or take a year, at pier 84 in NYC… THE tightest band I have ever heard live, bar none! And not just in a given genre, though there have been some jazz gigs that come close (Cecil Taylor and max roach at Columbia University around 2000-2001!)…

I was at that concert, all I remember is my mind being blown, such a fan of Tony Levin and bill Bruford. Became a big fan of crimson after that show. I saw another great show at the bottom line in the 2000s with Levin and Bruford in a group called extremities sat about six feet away from stage, I met them afterwards and was dumbfounded I didn't even know what to say to them except that I was just a great fan of them. The night I'll never forget.

This is the best concert of the Fripp, Belew, Levin, and Bruford era. Belew had just arrived in KG and had that unbridled energy that Fripp most likely tamped down later.

Fripp always wrote & played for “Head, Heart & Hips”… I honestly don’t believe Bobby Fripp “tamped” any one's energy and joy in playing in Crimson…I was lucky enough to see Adrian Belew when rehearsing he was with Talking Heads’ initial “full band” line-up. I was only a few feet and able see how intense and yes, joyful while the he was playing. Granted it’s hard to not have fun playing music like the “Head’s” back then, but it was obvious he was in heaven playing their music. Belew’s next gig was Crimson which judging from this concert, and the one I was able to see, that joy was continued with Fripp, Bruford & Levin. Listen to the intensity that Levin & Bruford were bringing, how could you note be ecstaticplaying in that group. Yes, Fripp required note-perfect playing, but at the same time an intensity that honestly, I don’t believe any other group surpassed…

Allowed out of the cage for "Indiscipline," reined in otherwise. I mean, he plays from a freakin' stool, our man Fripp. In a 3 pc suit oftentimes. I think he'd prefer they all follow suit, no pun intended. If a musician is interesting otherwise, he seems to suffer their idiosyncracies to a small extent. Odd, to me, as pre-Belew/Levin, the entire catalog seems a paean to idiosyncracies. I guess it's a matter of type/degree.

tony levin is a delightful bald headed madman playing bass and ostinato parts at the same time! bruford is always impeccable and inspired as a drummer, and i have to say i just love adrian's voice, it's so emotional and beautiful. and his guitar playing is a delightful insane contrast of wild animal emotion, which fits the musical savannas of this band's period of music. i think it's peak pop music

Back in the mid-80's I remember discovering this unassuming VHS tape in a tiny local video store in Portland OR. Ended up renting it several times to re-watch. Finally hooked up the audio output through my stereo system so I could rip the audio to a cassette tape which I then wore out in the car. So these particular performances have a special resonance for me.

Adelante KC. me encanta elefant talk.
