Baritone James Newby and Pianist Ashley Beauchamp perform "King David" by Herbert Howells in recital at The Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich 09/10/2015 Video credits Giles Rozier
Heard this sung at a Glyndebourne family day today - and very happy indeed to hear it again sung by you - remembering the occasions you've sung in Lewes with my choir - lovely performance here, thank you
I heard David Daniels sing this song in a recital in Boston about 10 years ago and fell in love with the song, as well as David's interpretation. Howells is one of the great English composers of the 19th c. James Newby - this is utterly beautiful and I am so glad I clicked on this on a gray, chilly June day in Manchester, NH.
I did not know the song ...I did not know the singer... forgive me, but now I know. I was blown away, like many others before me (so I read) What a voice. Thanks to RU-vid 6 years after this was recorded you can still welcome new admirers. One of the best younger baritons I came across lately. Of course now finding my way back on youtube to the beginning of your career! Very best regards from the Netherlands (hence I didn't know him so far) at the (almost) last day of the year and a blessed 2022 to you. By the way: plenty of concert halls in Holland!!! And conveniently between England and Germany! Looking forward!!
A beautiful and expressive rendition of this fine song and poem. Keep singing and keep posting from another singer! I don't know if you read the earlier part of this comment which I made quite some time ago, but upon listening to your interpretation, I see that there are pauses and more expressive things that you use which are really wonderful. Next time I sing it, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks! it's such a wonderful song.
