Geunchogo 근초고왕 近肖古王 (324-375) was the 13th king of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Baekje 백제 lasted from 18BC to the year 660AD. It constituted along Goguryeo and Silla, the Three Kingdoms of Korea. As soon as he became king, Geunchogo solidified his royal power. He set up a system of local governments with heads appointed by him. By doing so, the aristocracy lost decisional power in governmental affairs.
Baekje reached its greatest geographic extent and power under Geunchogo. He annexed the remaining Mahan tribes, taking over all of present-day Jeolla province. He made an alliance with the Kingdom of Silla in 366. King Geunchogo also gained a lot of influence over the Gaya confederacy in the south of the Korean peninsula.
Diplomatic relationship was established with Eastern Jin China 동진, 東晉 and Yamato Japan 야마토 시대, 大和時代. He was given the title of "General Stabilizing the East and the Administrator-General of Lelang” (진동장군 영낙랑태수, 鎭東將軍領樂浪太守) by the Eastern Jin emperor.
Geunchogo sent to the Yamato king the Chiljido sword 칠지도, the seven-branched sword. It is now housed in the Isonokami Shrine in Nara prefecture.
Baekje had many wars with the Kingdom of Goguryeo during Geunchogo’s reign. In the year 369, Goguryeo invaded Baekje in what is known as the battle of Chiyang 치양 전투. In 371, the battle of Pyongyang 평양성 전쟁 was fought. In 375, Goguryeo attacked Baekje at the fortress of Sugok 수곡성.
