Instead of handing out buttplugs, They should teach and study history before they react and criticize! The American Republic was not born 1876, 1776, 1619,or 1492! It was born on the steps of the Parthenon 500 BC, Baptized on the steps of the Roman Senate, and we have had to fight for it, protect it and nurture it ever since, for it to exist today, so snowflakes learn first why and how America was made, until then snowflakes have no right to judge or condemn!

Funny that he was also the best king John so far. Tbh..... I don't think he was as bad as normally made out to be. In the time leading up to Bouvines, John had the whole of the British isles by the balls. Losing the continental possessions was nearly a forgone conclusion. I'd argue that Edward II and probably Henry III were worse. And John was better then even Richard I in one VERY crucial aspect- he sired a son and an heir. Even if we believe Richards homosexuality he still should have pulled a Renly and made and tried to make an heir. "What of it? I'm not a fan of fish, but when fish is served, I eat it".

A victim of circumstance, a king who did not, would not, accept limits on his behaviour, spending, and power. But in the end, a king who resisted what must have been an almost overwhelming temptation to go to war against his own high born people-- and he could have had a pretty good go at it, if he'd managed to get serfs, peasants, men tied and free, onto his side. If he had been as manipulating, greedy, and coniving as he's sometimes portrayed, he could definitely, with some false promises, some showy spending, have sandwiched the barons between royalty and low born, and possibly prevailed. It would have ruined England for hundreds of years, but John could have done it. This was fascinating and very informative. Thank you very many much for all the research and hard work that went into actually making this doco, and for uploading it. The production itself was very well done. I thought I knew King John, but now realise I've still got a lot to learn. I'm looking forward to hearing this again, as I go to sleep (please don't be offended, it's just you've got a calming narrative going here, and also I think I'll need more than one repeat to fully grasp KJ impact. Thanks, kudos!

For John to try and appeal to common people he would have to have been a "big picture" kind of thinker and he really wasn't. Also he'd have to see the common people as more than a step up from animals, which was how the nobles saw common people at the time.

John was dealt a losing hand by his father and elder brother, who preceded him as king. He was a vigorus and active ruler who did the very best that could be done with the hand that was dealt him. He showed remarkable staying power, given all his enemies who were determined to overthrow him. He worked hard at his job right up to his dying day. He was loyal to his supporters who were loyal to him, and left his kingdom in honest and capable hands. He insured the succession of his sons to the throne.

He better had considering he murdered his nephew Arthur I, Duke of Brittany the rightful heir to the English throne. Arthur was the son of Geoffrey Duke of Brittany the brother who fell between Richard and John. But in all fairness there is not much a king can due if they die while the heir is a young boy and there are close powerful relatives looking to take the throne.

Who do you think is the worst English Monarch? I personally think that it’s Athelred The Unready. His massacre of Danes in 1006 led to The Danes invading England and driving Ethelred to Normandy. Athelred only took back England due to the death of King Sweyn. Thanks to his father’s incompetence, Edmund II had to fight Cnut. Unfortunately for Edmund, he was defeated, gave up most of England and was murdered. King Ethelred’s stupidity and shortsightedness caused 2 conquests of England and paved the way for the 1066 conquest of England.

John biggest problem was being the last son born to Henry II. He was never expected to be king. Also considering the chaos of the proceeding 10 or 20 years, it is hard to see how John could have had a successful kingship. The Plantagenets seemed to be unable to decide if they were French or English. I think this was a great weakness. John was criticized for the loss of lands in France, but in the long run, France and England needed to be separate kingdoms. I think the Magna Carta was very important for the future. To summarize, King was the placed between the old medieval and the modern era. The conflict between the future and the past was something John I tried but failed to navigate.

My 25th great grandfather knew King John I of England personally. My 25th great grandfather not only knew King John I personally, he also had floor length hair. My 25th great grandfather was absolutely devastated when King John I died at age 49 in late 1216. My 25th great grandfather mourned the death of King John I of England for decades. May they rest together in peace. 💐🌷🌹🌺🌸🌼

It was a shame that richard died so young. I think john was a victim of low expectations from his subjects and family. He was not raised to rule and would of been more suited to assisting richard as he possessed attributes that richard lacked. He also fell victim of trusting the french and maybe should of realised that king philip was not someone to trust and plotted against him in the same way

Every time I think of king john I think of his nephew the poor Arthur Plantagenet duke of brittany and his poor sister eleanor the fair maid of brittany. What this horrible man did to them both was a great tragedy. Even by Plantagenet standards. The boy was murdered probably by John and the boy's sister was kept a virtual prisoner by John and his successor Henry III. This was because Arthur and Eleanor had a better claim to the English throne than John. (They were the children of his older brother Geoffrey Plantagenet Duke Of Brittany).

As fascinating as I find it, I shall never get as good a grip on history as I should like. For me I find it far too linear. This, then that, then this and then.... too many names crammed into five minutes. Foreign names alluding to foreign people and foreign places. Not that I have an aversion to anything foreing. It just makes the task even more difficult. I`m more attuned to Science ( and my main inquiry is into mathematics ), but I`d love to get an education in History to complete what education I have. The Arts, the Fine Arts is another love of mine which - since it contains much history - remains a mystery to me. There is no pill that will cure me.

Wonderful documentary presentation. Thank you. As for the kings and the barons, all of them were a bunch of murderous bell-ends not worth a wet wank in my estimation. And as for the Magna Carta, it was simply an agreement between kings and barons, and did not mention the people who did all the work in mediaeval England. They did not count.

I feel like the bloke who narrated this and the majority of other historians don't really know what they are going on about. Frankly they contradict themselves on many occasions. He seemed to do a lot of decent stuff in my opinion and played a pretty important role. I will admit he may have made a few rash decisions but overall he was a pretty good conqueror and should be given more credit. There have been way worse kings and a lot of his wrongdoings have clearly been embellished for some reason.

There's nothing about John's reputed hanging of Isabella's lover on her bed post, or some such demonstrative vindictive gesture. Why was it not mentioned? Also, it is good to say which chroniclers recordered his reign and what they said about him, i.e. more emphasis on the sources would be great. This video seems to be sympathetic to John; it appears he was fighting on every side repelling attack from all corners and that made him tax everybody. When you say "barons" it is good to actually mention each by name and title, at least once. Otherwise quite a good piece.

As the stories are todl "told" it's surprising the power of "rule" lasts long as it does. Leads me to believe there is substantial goodness left out. Todl: verb present tense 1. To continually communicate information, facts, or news to someone in spoken or written words without objective consideration. "I todl you were coming" "I todl you were coming" "I todl you were coming" "I todl you were coming" "I todl you were coming" You get the idea.
