In the centuries of English monarchs, one is routinely considered the worst of them all: King John. Yeah he lost the Angevin Empire and was forced to sign the Magna Carta but he couldn't really be that bad, could he?

2:02 Fun fact: William II could’ve been killed by his younger brother Henry I. He died after being hit by an arrow while hunting, under circumstances that remain unclear. Circumstantial evidence in the behaviour of those around him raises strong, but unproven, suspicions of murder. Moral of the story: If you’re in line to the throne and your sibling asks you to join them on a hunting trip *alone* *with* *them,* say no.

I mean, he wouldn't have had any shortage of people willing to kill his brother too. William II was an absolute lunatic. He took a prominent role in the Harrying Of The North, a borderline genocide, and more or less acted as his father's enforcer. So when he took the crown his immediate solution was murder.

They weren't alone on the hunting trip. There was no such thing as "alone" in the middle ages. There were dozens of men present for that hunt, and I'm pretty sure we have name of the man who actually loosed the arrow: Walter Tyrell. Hunting accidents were pretty common for the time, and most historians reject the claim that Henry I somehow engineered his brother's death. However it is beyond dispute that, literally the instant William II died, Henry I rode to Winchester and took control of the Royal Treasury, so that he could take the throne from his other brother, Robert Shortpants.
@gasmonkey1000
@gasmonkey1000 9 месяцев назад
@@SRosenberg203 Yeah. They were pretty common but it was all pretty odd. William II was a brute, and Henry I was a very cunning individual. And I'm not sure if this speaks of the chaos or the Norman mindset or the suspicious nature of the whole thing but they all rushed back to their fiefs instead of trying to bring Rufus' body to even a small chapel. They left his corpse in the woods. Were it not for a peasant couple walking by he'd not even had received a proper burial

You get such a great read on their personality from stories and anecdotes it's great. Like Henry 2nd getting so angry he'd roll around on the floor, ripping the straw from his sheets and chewing it. Or Richard on 3rd crusade going out of his way to out do phillip. Phillip "you will bring me a rock for my trebuchet, and I will give you one gold coin." After all in your video on the Black Death you mentioned how Jewish people were often persecuted throughout history including in the Middle Ages and you also mentioned how they were wrongly blamed for causing the plague even though they had nothing to do with it and you also mentioned how in many countries in Europe such as Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, and The county of Flanders the Jewish people were persecuted and attacked and killed during the Black Death and Edward The 1st is often notorious for persecuting Englands Jewish population and ordering their expulsion from England which expelled all Jewish people from England where they were forbidden from returning to until it was repealed in the 1650s and because of that Edward is rightfully hated for what he did to Jewish people so you could also talk about the persecution and expulsion of Jewish people from England.

Imagine being so bad at being King that even your brother Richard, who spent about a total of 6 months of his 10 year reign in England, and bankrupted the country, is still considered the better King!
@SRosenberg203
@SRosenberg203 9 месяцев назад
That's precisely WHY he's considered a better King. An absent King is often looked on much more favorably than one who was there all the time. The Norman Kings of England up until John all spent a fair amount of time outside of England, overseeing their continental domains, Henry II and Richard especially. After John lost Normandy in 1204, he spent virtually all of his time in England. It's way easier to like a King when he's off somewhere else doing heroic shit or burning down French towns, than it is to like him if he's just *HERE*, ALL THE TIME. Both Henry II and Richard were more heavy-handed with their rule over baronial prerogatives and rights than John was, but his proximity was what made the barons feel like he was pressuring them so much more than they had been pressured by previous Kings, so Henry and Richard are both seen more favorably.

@@Swissswoosher Yep. In an era where Kings were also expected to be warriors, John was just spectacularly unlucky on the battlefield, which made him seem both less Kingly and less manly to his contemporaries, which contributed to a lot of his problems. He also got into several BIG conflicts with the Church, as the video says, and since Monks were doing most of the recording of history at that time, they didn't have too many nice things to say about him.

Not quite. Normandy was given to Robert Curthose, and England was given to William Rufus, but that was William the Conqueror's intention with regard to inheritance before he died. After his death, they fought a war in 1088 which made Normandy a subject to the English Crown, and Curthose was allowed to keep possession of the Dutchy but required to relinquish his claim to the throne. When William II died, Henry I usurped the throne from Curthose because he was away on Crusade, and then when Curthose got back and led a rebellion to try and retake it, Henry I won and took Normandy from him too. His brother was a traitor and was executed under the order of their older brother Edward but as a favour to their mother, Edward let his brother choose how he died and the brother had a fondness for Malmsey Wine so he chose to be drowned in the stuff(TBF If I had to pick a way I wouldn’t choose that one but if I could swap it with Irn Bru then I’d be all for it) and was suspended in a barrel privately in the Bowyer Tower, for record at this time Richard was most likely in Yorkshire enjoying his lands there but also preparing for war since a year later he was battling the Scots and it’d been a war that had been building for some time(he didn’t have time to make a trip down to London to hang his brother by his ankles in a barrel of wine).

Yep, also Richard III didn't lock the prince's in the tower either, that was a rumour started by William Shakespeare's play
@andrewobrien8325
@andrewobrien8325 9 месяцев назад
@@googlesucks1039 actually that one was started by someone else, I think it was Thomas Moore but don’t quote me on that, Shakespeare just went with it and popularised it. I hate to say it as well but the princes were last seen in the tower, Richard the III wasn’t the monster Shakespeare made him out to be, however it’s hard to deny that he didn’t help his case and that part is true. Who killed the princess on the other hand is beyond me….I wouldn’t want to say, there’s some evidence that the elder boy was already dying likely from a disease which for the time wouldn’t have been uncommon. The younger boy though….it maybe he was murdered because if the elder one died of the disease whoever was watching him would likely get the blame, so Richard, much easier to have both boys “disappear” than to admit that either died on his watch. Richard by that time had pretty much lost it, I mean he’d broken English law so badly that if he’d admitted that the Princes even had bruised knees, he’d have been in for the high jump, disappearing them was probable deniability. I mean by this point he’d executed Lord Hastings without a trial(lord Hastings was also not no one, he was Edward the IV’s most loyal advisor and everyone knew it, to cut his head off without a trial was a big NO NO and Richard wasn’t done). In the end I think Richard has been done dirty by history but he was no saint
@lewisirwin5363
@lewisirwin5363 9 месяцев назад
@@andrewobrien8325 Half of Richard's problem was the same as John's: He made good laws for the common people and tried to rein in aristocratic excess. Unfortunately, the commons were NOT the powerbase for the realm at that time, leading to Henry VII's eventual comeback.
@andrewobrien8325
@andrewobrien8325 9 месяцев назад
@@lewisirwin5363 Huh? I didn’t know that about him…but it does make sense. I still think olde Richard made other decisions that probably weren’t well thought out but I think the we can both agree it was the perfect storm of trouble(and even though he lost, if it had been a footie match that morning of the battle, you’d have put your money on Richard but that’s just on paper….and paper can be torn up and discarded).

He was a terrible king but if it wasn’t for him England may have ended up mostly in France and the Magna Carta might have never been enacted.

I mean, he was literally forced into signing Magna Carta at swordpoint, and the instant he was out of danger, he requested that the Pope invalidate the document (which he did). Let's give credit where it's due; to the Barons who came up with the damn thing, not the King who was coerced into signing it and whose son ignored it for the next 50 years.

Edward IV actually drowned his brother George in wine, and George was basically begging for it. And there’s a decent amount of evidence, in my mind, that the Duke of Buckingham killed the princes. Richard III was actually pretty badass, despite Tudor propaganda. And honestly, John wasn’t that bad. The Angevin Empire was inevitably going to fall, and he was unlucky a lot of the time. And once it fell, England was gonna hate him cause they were used to kings with French possessions. John spent his time in England enacting “justice” and no one likes that. The worst king was either Henry VI, Richard II, or Edward II. John was actually looking pretty good compared to them, and I’d say overall he was both a uniquely unlucky and mediocre man. Edit: Also, John was commonly called lackland cause it was a joke is Dad made (hahaha Harry) but he was actually given Cornwall and named Lord of Ireland.
