zeldafreak701 yes. But Hank is humble about it. He would welcome anyone interested in propane with open arms. That black guy is more toxic than the chemicals he put is in his flowers. Just like my fellow gamers in the Smash and Sonic community. But I digress.
@Spartan Charge DaYum No I didn’t. I could have said “Man in Purple shirt,” “Man with deep voice,” etc. I said black because that’s what came to mind. Like Hank, you could say “White Guy,” “Guy with Glasses,” or “Propane Guy.” Those are things you could say when describing Hank to someone when talking about the show. What comes to your mind first? I’m guessing “Propane Guy” but that may or may not be true. Nothing wrong with calling him a propane man right? Hank’s more than an assist manager, he’s also a dad, husband, Texan, etc. any of those would be fine. Same with the black man. He’s black. So what? It’s okay. There is nothing wrong with calling someone black.
I love how this scene flips the trope of the "wise learned charcter brushing off the bullies and taking the protagonist under their wing to teach them too be the master" to the master is a actually a hollow shell of a person haunted by the stress of being a master.
It also subverts the trope about the "wise black man". I mean, this guy's obviously "seen things", but it hasn't turned him into a folksy janitor or anything like that.
@topher nolastname I'm not saying he wasn't wise. The point of the "wise black man" trope is they're only there so they can be a mentor to a white character, like Morpheus to Neo, or Morgan Freeman to...well, everyone. This guy took one look at Hank and said "Noooope, you're on your own".
@topher nolastname Saying he was the wisest character in the show is crazy, the only reason he made that comment regarding Bobby was cause he was reminded of what he had to go through as a kid due to his own parents, so he took that anger out on Hank since he didn't want that to happen to another kid. It's not a Wise Master Trope, it's a Tired Master Trope.
He is just passionate. If anyone told hank some shit about propane and propane accessories i think he would get kinda angry too. Also Rose are no matter of jokes since you enter the magnum opus of flower artisans.
lmao right. Its a part of his character. He worries so much about his masculinity to the point that he brings attention to things no one else really cares or even thinks about. It makes for a nice joke or plot-point with him, especially when he has to dealing with Bobby's hobbies. My first time watching the show i never realized just how socially awkward Hank is but I think it fits him as a character.
I like how he lowkey admitted that his childhood was stolen from him due to his passion and doesn’t wish other sons to go through the same thing he went through
Actually that black guy had a point, you shouldn’t involve your son in such competitions so seriously, it’ll lead to obsessions that’ll waste their short time for child like wonder and play. “Playing chess well is a gift, mastering it is a wasted life.”
Joseph - hey team work and trying your best and improving is good, but let’s not confuse the spirit of competition with obsessive life consuming hobbies.
Strange. From his first two lines to Hank, I was expecting/hoping for him to be a mostly warm, welcoming character. Well-played, King of the Hill writers.
Ok but I love this episode because Hank proves once again how much he loves his son. And whilst Bobby isn't going for the usual lawn care that Hank would prefer, he realizes that Bobby's rose bushes are as important to him as his lawn. He makes an effort to understand his child and be supportive. Hank is definitely on the list of top tier cartoon dads.
Hank was trying to help his son win a competition he forced him into. Bobby just liked growing roses. If he really wanted to boost his son's confidence, all he had to do was ask him questions about his hobby.
@@eligodin9015 And it's really funny, because anyone who gets into gardening does start wearing clogs for some reason. Gardening somehow makes you too good for shoelaces.
One of the best jokes in the early show is when hank built the manger for luanne's puppet show and was all paranoid about the job he did. Peggy tells him he's being ridiculous and the camera pans over to 3 guys grumbling and shaking their heads.
Hank loves competition. And as crazy as rose growing might sound, he finds out how competeive and how much effort it takes. He learns to appreciate something he never thought he'd take serious. Same as when he took up dog dancing.
LOL, well this explains why Hank got scared off from the legitimate rose-growing stores to the pot dispensaries. Compared to this scary, intense dude, those potheads were so welcoming and nice.
You know, one day you will find yourself in a position where you're trying to grow, and maintain a lawn Only then will you truly understand hanks reaction to the insult on lawn care
A guy 3 houses down from me has a beautiful lawn. It does look nice, I'll give it that. But mine has clovers. I prefer the (cue Hank Hill here) 'hippie' all-natural lawn for bees and less strain on my wallet and time.
@@Randy-ry9ss Ugh, good grief... I keep seeing people around me cutting their grass too short, and then there are brown spots all over the yard. And as bad as that is and as easy as it is to remedy (use a slightly higher blade setting,) I'd sooner see brown than I'd see comically badly matching spraypaint on the grass.
I like how it makes it seem like he's a nice and down to earth guy when sticking up for Hank, and then immediately turns into a jerk just because Hank asked a couple questions. xD
Hank ridiculed the man's passion in a host of ways, not least of which by just assuming he could walk into any ol' rose growing competition and win (even over the gentleman in question) while simultaneously knowing absolutely nothing about it.
@@waynepolo6193 Yes but Hank was genuinely puzzled on how it works. The guy didn't have to act so hostile. After all, he didn't know everything either. Hank just asked a couple questions.
@@Yabuturtle Hank was puzzled because he was presumptuous. He didn’t even consider that he doesn’t know anything about how it works, let alone winning. That’s called arrogance. Sure, the other guy could have been less aggressive about it, but what he said wasn’t wrong.
And just like that Hank found out something he thought was easy and girly “if you’ll pardon the idiom” is taken as seriously as he would sell his propane.
many people think cooking is easy same with gardening. both take a lot of commitment and there is a science. look how many people get into owning a restaurant then are floored it actually takes work and knowledge to keep it running
He got away from Hank’s rage because he was right. Hank did let Bobby get away with a lot of crazy things because he didn’t want to be like his own father, but almost ended up being somehow worse at being a father. Man, King of the Hill is still legendary.
Hank's main flaw was not accepting Bobby being well a clone of himself or his own peers. He often would project his own wants, and expectations on Bobby, rather than accept Bobby was his quirky self. Now I'm not going to full-on demonize Hank because parenting is no easy game, and compared to his own Dad, Hank is a saint compared to Cotton. For any stupid thing Hank does as a parent, he will never traumatize Bobby in the same ways Cotton did to him, and plague him with eternal self-doubt and self-rightousness. At least my take of it, and while we can analysize the writing to hell and back and the 'intent vs. actual outcome' of the themes, but at the end of the day I see Hank as a good if very flawed Dad.
1:57-1:58 I pity Hank, he tried to help his boy Bobby and these two women make fun of him and this make puts his rage on Hank like he taking advantage of Bobby or forcing him to do something Bobby doesn't want to do. Damn those three loser. I'd understand if u told me that Hank. Don't listen to them.
The best part of this scene is the very beginning: Hank Hill is so self-conscious about having to enter the gardening section that he deliberately kicks a can into it, proclaiming "Oh, I'll get it!" to a group of men who weren't even aware he was there. Fucking brilliant!
"Don't let them get to ya, they just treat anyone that isn't sponsored by miracle grow like they are lower than fertilizer." "Also don't let me get to ya cuz I treat anyone that doesn't know all about roses lower than shit." Pinnacle hypocrisy.
