Not really. ‘Raw’ mango is a term that’s usually used for the green mango that is used for pickles, chutneys and curries. When you say ‘unripe’ mango- it mostly refers to the sweet mangoes you normally eat, but that are not yet fit for consumption. The usage may differ from place to place but from what I’ve heard in India, this is how it normally is

Drumsticks are a 'superfood' rich in iron and a lot of vitamins. Look it up, they're recognised as a superfood just like quinoa and eggs. They're called Moringa in English I believe. It is an anglicised version of the Tamil name murungakkai. In India it is common to cook them in dal or sambar. The mango is unripe, that's why it is green and the insides are white. They're sour and add a lot of flavour to savoury dishes. Looking at the shape it looks like banganapalli mangoes.
@sudhirkhamari
@sudhirkhamari 2 года назад
Moringa is adapted name in english, the root does come from *Sanskrit* (Not Tamil) word "MorunGli". Called by multiple name in multiple indian language, but all sounds like "Murung + some phonics sound".

@@sudhirkhamari Hello u got it wrong .. it's Tamil word per etymology .. Murugugakai is morphology if the word Muruku (twisted) + Kai (unripe fruit/veg) - which clearly shows it's derived off Tamil. Origin off words is determined when the word is broken down to the last bit that gives meaning. Just as Diwavalli in Hindi but not breaking it is just Diwali (bankrupt) + Ali (person) but in Tamil it's Deebavalizh morphed to Deepavalli On breaking it in Tamil it's Deebam or deepa (Light/Flame) + Valzhi (path) meaning By Path/way of Light which in other words is Righteous Path as Light or Flame is associated as Truth or Right .

@Sriram Rajagopalan The mango is a variety called Totapuri and looks like a parrot's beak in shape. Even when fully ripe, it has a slightly sour taste. In this case it is raw. It is also eaten raw, with some salt and chilli powder. Also, apart from the moringa vegetable, the leaves of the tree are also consumed. They are very rich in iron. The water in which the leaves are boiled has enough iron to substitute the iron supplements given to pregnant women. I have seen this at first hand.

Drumstick is a very flavorful vegetable in sambhar!/ very different from Okra - The leaves of the drumstick plant/tree are also edible and added to make a kind of dosa ! - healthy Vermicelli ( what you felt was thinner than angel hair pasta LOL) is used for deserts primarily. Sago is Tapioca - so they made a kheer/ payasam combining sago with vermicelli - I hope that helps.

The drumstick is colloquial/commercial term but it's called as moringi in English taken off Caribbean country slang which was taken off Indian language. To begin Tamil is a descriptive language and so the sentence construct are much longer. Murungakkai I is the Tamil word it's a combo of two words Murungu+ Kai comes (morphed) off Muruku (twisted/tough) + Kai (unripe/fresh fruit/veg) describing its structure and shape. Etymology is study of words & Origin of words are determined when the word is broken down to the last bit that gives meaning. Just as "Diwavalli" in Hindi but on breaking it is "Diwali" (bankrupt) or Di (flame)+ Ali (person) but in Tamil it's " Deebavalzhi" morphed to "Deepavali" On breaking it in Tamil it's Deebam or deepa (Light/Flame) + Valzhi/Valli (path) meaning By Path/way of Light which in other words is Righteous Path as Light or Flame is associated with Truth or Right (honesty, integrity etc) and as the saying goes "Truth hurts or truth burns".

It is Sambar with two side dishes. Plus the vermicelli pudding with cashews for dessert. Also had pappadum. The drumstick is the fruit of the moringa plant. This plant has been said to be miraculous in curing inflammation and a variety of ailments. It is very fibrous and one sucks on it after being cooked. It tastes a lot like an asparagus. This is a typical feast with Sambar as the sauce over the rice. I make it at least once a week.

Drumsticks are known as Moringa in the west. Its considered as superfoods in west now. In west you have moringa leaves from the tree but the veggie of the moringa tree is the moringa sticks. In India its called Murangika and is predominantly found everywhere in south. Until recently it was a poor man's veggie but with the labeling of it as superfoods in the west its gone up in value in the nutritional charts.

Drumstick gives better taste to sambhar than other vegetables. Usually chilli and corrinader powder is used at home. Sambhar with absence of tamarind will give better taste to idli and dosa. Sambhar is used in common for side dishes like fried fishes, fried prawn, chicken 65 etc.

Scientific name of drumstick is Moringa oleifera. It's a plant grown in household at village. Very common for village people to have their own home grown drumstick.

Indian cooks are more about putting in stuff upto your liking. They prepared sambhar, okra curry(it would be really tangy with raw mango, pudding(tapioca pearls, and vermicelli is pasta like without egg in dough), and rice papad(that is like funyuns but no cornstrach). You can find these recipes separately and prepare.

Tamrind is a good substitute for green mango. Or you may use dried raw mango powder ( Aamchoor) which is easily available as a substitute

Drumstick is moringa. You get frozen ones in the USA. Same for raw mango. If you live near NJ you get all the ingredients you saw in the video, fresh.

So there were so many ingredients because it was 4 not 1 dish. They were: 1. Sambhar: the spicy lentil stew that they put over the rice 2. The okra curry, to eat with the sambar and rice 3. Applam: basically like an Indian Nacho, for the crunch 4. The vermicelli pudding for dessert

I heard the lady saying 'I don't know what Drumsticks are'' . they are vegetables/fruits from the Moringa tree... Moringa leaves are widely known in North America and Europe.

I think Drumsticks grow on the Moringa Tree...they are the fruit. And the green mango could be any mango just raw for the tang.
