Absoltely great to see attention this lost chapter of rock and roll history. Those of us that collect blues, R&B, country, doo wop and soul records know King real well. The info about WLW is astounding - a 500,000 watt broadcast station?!? The 50,000 watt ones were what I thought were the huge ones.

Bullshit. Brown wasn't even signed to King until almost 15 years after the label was founded. King was primarily a country label for the first several years.

@@anthonytaylor7928 Of course we all know that blacks invented everything.

Hands down the greatest label in R&B from the 40s through the early 60s. Because so much of the catalog was held back for so many years, younger folks never really got an earful.

Didn't King also own Federal, DeLuxe and Bethlehem labels? Not mentioned in this video.

and also the Queen subsidiary from the 40's and later revived in the early 60's as Kings reissue label through which they issued other labels hits

Good Rockin' Tonight was not FIRST recorded by Wynonie Harris as Powers claimed. Harris actually turned it down when Roy Brown, who wrote it, sent it to him. Brown ended up recording it himself, and when it started to take off, Wynonie changed his mind, and recorded it. His outsold Brown's by a mile, but it definitely wasn't the first version. While there's really no definitive "first R&R record", Brown's own version of the song he wrote is NEVER mentioned in discussions about the origins of R&R. Many R&B/R&R historians do however, point to Harris's version as a strong candidate for that title. Play them back to back and you'll recognize why one is R&R and the other isn't.
