With the Kingdom Hearts 3 ReMind DLC coming out I thought it might be useful for some people to have walkthroughs on the data fights encountered after beating the DLC. These are especially useful for those playing on Critical mode where some of the nuances of the fights aren't explained very well in-game.
Second on the list is the boy who just wants to be known as darkness, Vanitas. Good lord I had trouble learning the patterns here. Vanitas is certainly an opponent you can react to, but your window for that reaction is small and there is little room for mistiming your defensive options. Not to mention his desperation move gives me Birth by Sleep PTSD
I plan on creating walkthroughs for all 13 data fights on Critical Mode as well as the Secret Boss, so stay tuned! If you find the video useful or fun please consider leaving a like and subscribing.

This was SO helpful, thank you! I found another opening that seems consistent. When he does the fireballs, after the second round he will teleport a few times before firing the third but will ALWAYS fire from your left side. So if you shotlock right after you block the second and aim to your left you can airstep to him and interrupt his fireball combo for a punish. Looking forward to more from you.

You're Welcome! Glad I was useful. Yeah, I've heard something to a similar effect from others about that opening. Tbh I need to be better about using shotlock air steps to close the distance on opponents and interupt them midway through their moves to reveal more openings. I've been playing very much with the KH2 mindset where we never had those abilities. Still it can't hurt to know exactly how to block the entirety of a move should you need to.

You can do the same thing with a dodge roll, but sometimes that fireball circles back around and hits you

I just beat Vanitas without him activating his DM. I found out you can Shotlock warp to him right as he’s gathering the keys and attack him relentlessly. 🤘🏼

You can also cast Chain firaga and it will also knock him off the key blades skipping this phase. How I beat him. You might need to be in dark form or any form change for it to work idk I was always in dark form or duel oblivion form

Use thundaga. The timing for airstep is very strict.

You don't even have to use Thundaga or Shotlock. Hell, when I saw him rise up in the air, I dodgerolled/glided over to him and beat the shit out of him. As long as the black cloud of smoke is still there, you can interrupt him. Didn't have to deal with ANY of his DMs once. Beat him in about three minutes.

After about 5ish hours I finally did it! I also did the entire fight without dealing with his dm once. If you thunder him right as he is hopping on his keyblades it cancels the attack. Thought it only worked for his other non-dm move but was just timing it wrong. As of right now it seems to be consistent thing. Thank you so much for the guides, I plan on using them for the other 12 fights so you got a sub from me!

Another way to counter his blade beam: If he does it at a distance you'd want to block the first two, then dodge the 3rd slower moving one. When he shoots them again block the first two, and then airstep through the last one and you can get a full combo off. Something to keep in mind since reprisals aren't the only way to punish that move. There might be a more effective way of using an airstep punish here but I'm just adding my two cents

Hey! Just now watching this, May 2021. I finally got the courage to fight all of these guys using all the pro codes on critical. This guide was amazing helpful. The only guide I found that identified the pattern for the DM. Holy crap! That was so spot on and useful. I also found, if you cast lightning on him right before he jumps onto the keyblades, you can cancel the move. But I wasn't always that slick. So thank you! Because of you, I survived the DM and got a perfect 13-pro-code score!

Keep your cool during DMs. They are usually all about trial and error. Once you see one performed all the way through, study it, note what can be blocked/dodged and commit it to memory. For as scary as they look, they are very predictable once you know what you are up against. Links are fine, but you get a bigger rush from throwing a big middle finger at a DM by knowing how to deal with it without exhausting resources/magic.

@@ahmadazhar2798 or, next time, you can either Shotlock/Thundaga him if he's too far away or beat the shit outta him with combos. Once you see the black cloud and keyblades appear, do any of those things to knock him out of his DM. I beat him without having to deal with any of them. It was so nice haha. Once I figured that out, his fight was a breeze. I wish Xion was as easy. She's more or less just block........a LOT. And lots of luck.

Quick tip for those unaware. you can cancel vanitas' desperation move by hitting him with thunder right as he tries to jump onto the wave of keyblades.

The easiest thing that I found was to keep interrupting his DM. ANY time you see him rise up in the air and keyblades appear, go in for the kill. I literally finished this fight in ~3 minutes because of that. Saved me a lot of headache. Other than that, your advice was solid.

@@A.Froster the best advice I can give you is to glide when his Keyblade glows red, block him when he does his teleport rush attacks (because then you can retaliate. And when he summons the Shadow, dodge roll around and get to him after the shadow punches the ground and the purple claw comes out of the ground. If you get to TerraNort right after the purple claw/spikey thing happens, that's an opening and you can deal major damage. His is a lot of glide and block. I would also equip the kick, versus the Slash in abilities. Kick seem to do more damage/be more accurate and have a higher chance of knocking them out of their move/guard than slash or blow.

Actually the Desesperation Move is completly skippeable you have to be fast but if you know his pattern you should know when to expect the DM, as soon as you see him trying to ride his Keyblades lock him and cast Thundaga this will pull him off the Keyblade and totally skip his DM, if you are fast enough you can even Air Step to attack him right away ^^. Also the 3 Fire Pillar when he doesn't blitz at the end is also punishable, during the third fire pillar watch him with the Shotlock when he is nearly on the ground Air Step to him (this looks scry but it's actually pretty safe) and you have an opening.

Another detail is that you can block his fireballs when he starts jumping out of the ground, this means that even if he doesn’t blitz after the third jump you can get a full combo on the third repetition each and every time. Something to note is that even though he ALWAYS goes behind you, your block will always catch the fireballs regardless of which direction you’re facing.

In his first phase he will always DM after he has done 4 moves. you can interrupt it with thunder or quickly shotlock

For the desperation move if you have trouble memorizing it you block the dark shadows coming towards you and dodge any white lights coming at you and if it’s mixed with shadows and lights coming at you that’s another dodge since it has white lights

Honestly the way they brought back the data fights made kh3 good for me. I remember buying it on the PS4 when it came out and I didn’t enjoy it much especially compared to kh2, but after getting remind dlc I like 3 a lot more even tho it’s pricy

After six hours of saix this man was a joke. Also shout out to Alex Deeter and Igneous Rock, Used both methods and killed hi in like 2 minutes. Couldn't figure out the desperation move but hes easy if you dont have to deal with it.

After he glides when he jumps off the key blades and teleports you can go right at him and interrupt his next move with a combo. This fight isn’t bad and it’s actually pretty fun but that fucking dm kept getting me. Thanks for this guide i’ve been trying to avoid these but I desperately needed this one.

there's another attack you can safely counter him: when he does the fire fountain without the ice blitz at the end, you can airstep to him and attack him, but you do need to wait until you'll use your regular attack.

big thing to note if you get a reprisal on him you can actually do two full combos before revenge values kick in. Any other hit you were correct on only about 1+1/2 combos on him. I prefer jumping on his ice strike and blocking to get the reprisal rather than the block+dodge action when fighting him due to this quirk on his revenge values.

I found that if you shot lock in the middle of your combo with the ultima weapon you can potentially skip his DM. I just beat him with this method. Having the ultimate form situation charged up helps too.

You don't have to have the Ultima Weapon to do this. Using any Keyblade and just airstepping to him or getting to him when you see him calling the keyblades and attacking will interrupt it.

This is what we need But FIY he actually has 4 openings to hit him but the other 3 are hard to get right When he does the fire rain on the third jump you can shot lock him and get to him before he touches the ground and combo but if the fire hits you then you won’t be able to As for the second one when he is shooting the fireballs at you when he is done with the first bursts and starts to teleport 3 times before he shoots another fireball you can dodge forward under the fireball and combo him but you have to get the timing right or else he will just teleport away again

I hope this fight won't take me another hour to deal with, as despite having failed to beat him for about 2 or 3 hours, I kinda figured out the phase 1, phase 2 still haven't dealt with it yet because he defeated me before actually going to that phase while I got him at 50% health or less in two of my failed fights, I think now I'll be able to deal with him.

@@curtissicks9739 Yup, It took me a while yesterday but trying to do it without items (except Kupo Coin) and without food to boost your status and little to no forged keyblades and no ultimate weapon was nuts. My next two targets are Xigbar and Luxord as those two are the ones I have got close to win so far.

Thanks for this!!! I somehow managed to effortlessly block/dodge his other attacks and know when to attack pretty fast but I could not for the life of me figure out how to survive his DM. That would always take me out. Vanitas is currently my last data battle so hopefully my next run on him will be the last lololol, thanks for the vid!!

One tip you seem to be missing: Whenever vanitas breaks your guard with his blitz attack you can riskdodge and then attack him.

So far the artist 2 for me out of five Fighters is vanitas and Riku. I had to put my game away today because I was unable to get past the new combos after the DM I was left open because I was using limits to get past it

Ive seen some of the more well established channels use limits really situationally to get past DMs or moves they dont understand well enough. Its still super early in the discovery of strats for these fights and I have a feeling that just due to the nature of how quick these opponents are and how open Limits/summons leave you in this game, people will stop using them and learn the block timings eventually. I only took hits near the end so I think its very doable to no damage this without limits

For the blitz after the fire fountain its a distance thing. If youre close enough at the end of the 3rd then he'll do it. If not he wont

I could be wrong, but that's not what I found in my 6+ hours trying to learn this fight. He seems to do the ice blitz if prior to the fire fountains he did a triple blitz. If prior to the fire fountain he attacked with three white traveling slashes then he would not blitz after the third fire fountain. Distance never affected that pattern. If you could link me some proof speaking to the contrary I would be happy to review it. Appreciate you regardless.

you can also hit him at the end of the fire fountain if he's not going to do the ice slash and get a combo in. You gotta catch him falling but you can still hit him. I also found if you catch him right as he's calling the keyblades to ride on, if you get him before he connects you can get a combo in.

SO WAS I. I literally dealt with it by not dealing with it and ending him before he could get most of it off. Dodging his striped balls is not too challenging, but when he starts throwing all of his moves at you at once while shooting those flames at you that inflict status ailments... Fuck that. Are you trying to no damage it?

So I tried this on proud mode and there was some major differences, mainly that he still does the triple blitz at the beginning but everything after that seemed to be completely different with no real pattern that I could see. Your tutorial though did tell me the number of times he'd try some of the moves before switching but they were still off for proud mode. Thanks though I still beat him barely.

Ah man, Luxord was a pain in my ass. He's one of those battles that you either love or hate. And I HATED it. It's more just figuring out his game pattern which takes a LOT of trial and error. And not smashing the x button (which is normally par for the course in KH). You have to focus, not panic, and play by his rules. Also, block block block block Block BLOCK and......oh yeah.........BLOOOOCCCCCKKKK!!!!!! Haha, but seriously.....the more you successfully block, the less damage you will take and the fewer cards will be on the field (which are both critical to beating him). Especially in his DM. His DM is incredibly long and requires so much focus. And if you've taken a lot of damage and your time guage is low, will more than likely be your death. Good luck, though!!! I Finally beat him and am so glad I never have to do that again.

Oh Man ! He was a pain, I agree with what you sad about smashing the x button, that’s like a natural in KH and you have to stop yourself doing that. Currently on Yozora and have no idea how I’m going to beat him. The best I’ve done yet is take out 2 bars. He’s just brutal and landing a hit on him seems more like dumb luck than anything.

@@twilightsuzuka6252 it really is!!!! You're so lucky. I've Only beaten 5 of the 13 data bosses: Larxene, Marluxia, Ansem, Luxord, and Dark Riku. I was gonna do Xigbar next but I would like to save him for right before Xion and Master Xehanort because I know he's super easy and the other two are really hard. I'm trying to win against Vanitas but he just keeps massacring me. I love these challenges, but at the same time I hate them haha.

Oh I barely focus on that since I try to do no damage runs. That being said Doesnt hurt to play around and see what gives you the greatest damage stats and defense. Since vanitas uses Ice and fire you could try some armor that has resistance to those elements.
