Kingdom of Heaven - King Baldwin IV

Director: Ridley Scott
Writer: William Monahan
~ Come forward. I am glad to meet Godfrey's son. He was one of my greatest teachers. He was there when, playing with the other boys, my arm was cut. It was he, not my father's physicians who noticed that I felt no pain. He wept when he gave my father the news, that I am a leper. The Saracens say that this disease is God's vengeance against the vanity of our kingdom. As wretched as I am, these Arabs believe that the chastisement that awaits me in hell is far more severe and lasting. If that's true, I call it unfair. Come. Sit. When I was sixteen I won a great victory. I felt in that moment that I should live to be one hundred, now I know I shall not see thirty. You see, none of us chose our end really. A king may move a man, a father may claim a son. But remember that, even when those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was not convenient at the time." This will not suffice. Remember that.~

It's fair to say that Baldwin was indeed amazing to won against a man like Saladin. A leper and a young king that can achieve that much achievments during his short lifetime. The treaty does not change the fact that the raid in Montgisard is carried by larger force in Saladin side. @@billwithers7457 That's the thing right - It doesn't actually matter if you believe in God. God in this metaphor can also be replaced with yourself: because in the end you must live with the things you have done, and the choices you have made. No matter the excuses you make, you know your own honest truths, and though you can lie to everyone else - someone who knows you completely (like God, or Yourself) - will know the truth of your actions. The point of this speech, IMO, is to be good because it is the right thing to do, and to seek virtue for your own sake, because in the end you must be able to live and die content with the way you chose to live.

The Director's cut is light years better than the Theatrical cut. That said, I actually prefer this scene in the TC. For some reason they used a different take of Edward Norton in the DC and the scene ends up feeling a bit too much like a philosophy lesson. The whole part about "a king may move a man" is played a lot more intellectually in the DC than it is in the TC. Here, we see the speech played in a more personal way, as though the king is thinking of his own mortality.

@evangelostse2477
@evangelostse2477 6 лет назад
Saladin was already quite honourable for his time, and quite progressive given the values he grew up with. There's only so much historical figures can do to transcend the social norms of their given society, and double that for rulers. An army, for example, was able to be mustered because the soldiers in it were properly motivated - by opportunities for plunder, rape and all sorts of monstrous behaviour in the aftermath of a won battle. As a general and a king, you cannot simply decree that 'there'll be no raping on my watch' without losing at least a quarter of your army, or have them deliberately hold back or rout. There's nothing Saladin can do about that, and the mercy he's shown is already impressive considering the alternative.
@louis2816
@louis2816 6 лет назад
Evangelos Tse Wrong, that is a myth cooked up by Muslims because Saladin was sometimes merciful when he thought he could get more out of a situation. For example, the reasons he kept people alive in Jerusalem was to ransom important figures and to sell others in slavery. Saladin was just your average Arab at the time. The only difference is that he was merciful when he knew he could get more out of a situation Saladin participated in Jihad and terrorised non-muslims. Baldwin IV, on the other hand, is an underated hero. This man was a leper and still led with conviction. He still led his men into battle even if he was badly injured.
@xicheung7867
@xicheung7867 6 лет назад
louis2816 You know, it's funny: it would normally be easy to believe this narrative you've just offered. However, I've literally just finished a book on Saladin, by John Man; and it was even more illuminating. Apparently, the magnanimity and generosity of Saladin which we (in the West) have come to learn of was as a result of chronicles of us (westerners) through the ages - for over 500 years up until the 19th century, the Muslims didn't take much interest in Saladin. However, such was the impact he made in Christendom that he gets mentioned in the work of various Europeans, from Dante to Voltaire, to Sir Walter Scott. Honestly, @EvangelosTse is right: Saladin was VERY progressive for his time and is deservedly respected. I mean, one of the example accounts in the books provides a shocking contrast between him and Richard I (the Lionheart). Most people have grown to look on Richard as a hero (and he was indeed a brave and inspiring leader of his army); however, Richard did some really f****d up thing with the 2600 Muslim prisoners he'd taken at Acre, in the full view of Saladin. Obviously retaliation for such is what one would expect of any person in a similar situation - and indeed Saladin wanted to. But, when the time came when he took Jerusalem, he saw (a long-term) vision to change his mind, successfully convinced his advisers to allow this change of heart (not an easy thing to do), and was still objective enough in his respect for Christendom such that he did not raze to the ground or loot its sacred Holy Places in Jerusalem. I am yet to hear of or read about any of the Crusaders reciprocating such respect to people of a different faith. Saladin was markedly progressive for that time.
@evangelostse2477
@evangelostse2477 6 лет назад
I have no idea why you say 'Saladin participated in Jihad' in the way you'd say 'Saladin participated in the Holocaust'. A holy war on the Muslim's side is still a holy war, you know. Try to see past your modern sensibilities.

@@davidepoggi736 Nah. Bloom did it right, man. I've seen the Theatrical Cut and the Director's Cut of this film. In the Theatrical Cut, I did not like his character so much. I thought Bloom really missed the mark. The problem, though, was not in Bloom, but the information that was cut for the theater. The Director's Cut actually explains his character a great deal. It explains why he is so gloomy and silent. Point is, he actually did a really good job, here. It's not an easy thing to play a quiet protagonist.

Some didn't like this movie. Others like me loved it. One thing that can't be denied though is that this movie had incredible messages on religion, acceptance, racism, and honor and respect. This movie should be an inspiration for how everyone lives today. It made a huge impact on my life. People put to much faith in books like the Bible and Quran when God himself/herself did not write one single word in either of those collection of books. Not 1 letter. Not 1 symbol. Not 1 word. Your Bible/Quran is your mind, your heart, your conscience, and your soul. Your mind alone can be corrupted, but as long as you listen to the others along with it, you will have the chance to be a good person. I'm no saint, that's for sure, and I have a long way to go to be the person I want to be, but I still feel good about who I am as a person now.
