Kings and Emirs - History Of Africa with Zeinab Badawi [Episode 6]

BBC News Africa

In this episode Zeinab Badawi focuses on the fall of the kingdom of Aksum and how the Christian kings who followed in the wake of its demise left powerful legacies especially that of King Lalibela who ruled in the 12/13th century. He is credited with building a complex of rock hewn churches which represent amazing feats of engineering at that time.
Zeinab also charts the arrival of Islam in this part of Africa and how the Christian kings and Muslim emirs co-existed. And she visits Harar, the most holy of Ethiopia’s cities for Muslims, where she observes the bizarre long-standing tradition of the ‘hyena men’ of Harar who feed these wild animals by hand.

Dear Zeinab as a proud Ethiopian with our culture and history, I would like to thank you very much for considering Ethiopia and Eretria in this edition. I believe through this series Africans shall develop a sense of respect and integrity for ourselves. This will create a strong public to public ties through understanding our shared history and tradition. In this series, you had tried to tell us a little about the Abyssinian middle ages. I believe your memories from the tour across Ethiopia and Eretria will be long-lasting. I had started subscribing to this channel and looking forward to seeing from all around Africa. Magnificent work!

I absolutely agree with your statement. It is through knowing our history AND passing that knowledge onto our children that we will develop self-love, self-esteem, self-respect, and commend respect from others. It is in that mindset that I started my RU-vid channel narrating stories to people of all ages. Some of my stories are fiction and others are based on real facts, but they have the common goal of teaching a few things about Africa and its beauty and diversity. Please check it out when you get a chance. Thanks 🙏🏾 P.S: I briefly and accidentally visited Ethiopia last year and LOVED IT! The richness of its history is mind blowing.

Brilliant. No sensationalization of events to match with the usual narrative as we often see. In Ethiopia and in Eritrea different religion followers live side by side and there are intermarriages between them. The current Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali was born to a Muslim father and to a Christian mother. He followed the religion of his mother. Ethiopia and Eritrea set an example to the rest of the world.

yes thats abiys story. but this is not how islam works. in islamic theology it is rule to take the religion of the father and if the man marries a woman she must become muslim. the only reason why you have these anomalies throughtout africa with mixed religion families is because islam came to them differently from the rest of where it dominated. islams history was mostly conquest in the areas that are predominantly islamic today. in the case of ethiopia it was mostly through trade. the same for places like senegal, gambia, nigeria and mali for example. you will find mixed religion families. but mostly the man is the muslim and the woman is a christian. a muslim woman would never marry a christian man. whether they follow the précepts and theology of these religions is another story. usually they dont. and many dont even understnd the theology. for them its just religion. cause if they did they usually would not get along. and i have seen this happen

@@thicky I t heavy to swallow. Why not the reverse. If a woman married to a man..the man has to be converted to her religion. .... You need to liberalize yourself. All religion are same but specially I. Muslim, they all try to protect their God. This is so funny. Give the choice to the person her/him selves.

You have done a nobel documentary that doesn't only offer a contribution to the evolution of humanity, but furthermore, offers a critical evidence that many generations have vanished due to greed for money that escalated to wars and extinction in many forms. This is a starting point to alarm the current generation about the future of humanity. When does that day come when educational institutions, and the world media show the benefits of peaceful coexistence. The humanity is quite thankful to you Mrs.Zeinab..

The documentary ended at 13th century with the re-establishment of the Solomonic dynasty by Yokunu Amlak. What about the Ethiopian history after that? Upto the European invasion after the partition of Africa? The Oromo history in Ethiopia? Oromo is mentioned only once but has a critical history to understand the modern day Ethiopia. The balance of the core historical issues were understood and well presented. I understand some people feel missing historical facts and yes that is true. In the presentation of Southern Africa Kingdom in another documentary, Zenab narrates the Portuguese influnce to the end of colonisation by Europe and the scramble of Africa in the Congo documentary. The part that says: "Islam is as the history of Ethiopia as Christianity is" is central to understand the history of Ethiopia. To this day you can see the two religions living side by side tested with centuries of conflicts and tolerances. There are so much missing but I would say this serves as a good introduction. Great job Zaineb, UNESCO and BBC.

I have also read that Zagwe was in fact founded by Gudit (Queen Judith) whom overthrow Dil Na'od the local Aksum ruler in Lasta and was succeeded by her son Takla Haymanot who was also the son-in-law of Dil Na'od in the late 10th century AD. Gebre Mesqel Lalibela wasn't therefore the founder but he expanded the Zagwe dynasty in Lasta and established it's great capital which was named after him. Thus questioning the story of Gudit being a Jewish leader who destroyed the great Aksum kingdom.

I appreciate Journalist Zainab’s efforts in promoting the history of Africa to the world. I have seen the BBC African History documentaries particularly on the history of Ethiopian and the Horn. It is really interesting particularly her presentation on the current cultural demonstrations of different parts of the Horn of Africa. But it is a disastrous presentation when we come to the history of Ethiopia. She even could not differentiate between Zagwe and ‘Solomonic’ periods. Above all, she confuses the Zagwe with the ‘Solomnic’ dynasty. But it was the ‘Solomonic’ dynasty (1270-1974) that shaped the Horn Africa for more than 700 years. All churches she visited in Aksum were built by ‘Solomonic’ dynasty. Surprisingly, she did not even pronounce a word on the ‘Solomonic’. The rivalry between Christians and Muslim kingdoms never been between Zagwe. I know she is an unexperienced on the presentation of the history of Ethiopia and the Horn but she could have been consulted by historians of the periods. When we come to her narration on the pre-Christian Ethiopian and Eritrean, her approach is diffusionist. She told us the story of the Sabean migration, which invite to believe the civilization of the northern part of Ethiopia emerges from the South Arabia. It would have been easy, if she could have checked in recent books on the history of Aksum authored and available in the libraries of London. She would have presented the contrary. Today, we are by far in a position to disprove the Hamitic myth. It is unfortunate if BBC, continue to present as she narrated the history of Ethiopia and the Horn with the same miss-interpretation, she is misrepresenting the history of the whole content. Please stop or diffuse the history of Africa with prudence.
