How many hours does that poor horse has to stand there, and all those people are stupid,does anyone read the sign next to them. Omg

Most of the time the horses don't mind. Horses are sensual and tactile creatures. They like being petted.

The horses are only out there an hour at a time.

The problem is that they are not allowed to hold the reins, then they take over the horse.

But that's how your government presents the whole kings guard! I am aware that these guys are some of the best trained soldiers in the British military, but when they are placed in these particular role, they are more of an icon! Be real! 99% of their job is standing around looking interesting for tourists to get photos with! He dresses them in uniforms designed centuries ago with doll swords to stand in completely insecure areas on horses! They are there to represent the monarchy! If they were being used as guards, they would be dressed like the USA's secret service, in suits with ear wires, or in soldier attire. They would be carrying guns instead of dull swords. They would be in a secure area with high-tech fences outfitted with lots of security cameras! They would drive in black SUV's, in military jeeps, or even on a motorcycle instead of on horseback! Those folks who support the guard are the real safety enforcers! Those folks in the funny black hats and uniforms from the 1700's are there to look "royal". That is the actual truth of the matter! Don't get.e wrong... I know they are trained and probably do protect the royals once in a while, but their real job??? Looking pretty. Be honest with yourselves.

No one "dresses them in Uniforms " These are their dress uniforms as any decent army has! Their real job? Well, they have been recently deployed in Cyprus, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Belize, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine. Their ceremonial duties are observed at home in the UK. All military have dress uniforms dating back in their proud history. They do not carry "old swords" Those are ceremonial, but extremely sharp, and can be used if necessary. USA's Secret Service? I think you don't have an idea about crack troops. I take it you are from the US as you don't seem to understand history, tradition and customs. I WILL be honest with you. You would not last a split second with one of the King's Guards. These are highly trained combat troops who could deal with anything, regardless of what they are wearing. How very ridiculous of you to compare them with the USA's secret service! Oh dear.....

Social media has a lot to answer for

Blame Disney, he copied their uniforms for his stupid actors at his stupid Disneyland and as a result people constantly claim - and if you don't believe read some of the comments on social media - that the guards are simply nothing but actors (with another group claiming they should halve the military and hire actors instead - cheaper apparently - as they obviously don't have any work to do if they can sit around on horses all day). And if they are only actors then they are obviously there purely for the tourists who ought to be allowed to muck about with the horses and pull their reins this way or that way because - being the equivalent to Disney actors - they aren't really dangerous. Sounds nutty but that is how more than a few explain it away. Even better are their comments regarding the Swiss Guard in the Vatican or the Greek ceremonial guards - both are also fully trained soldiers - in Greece.

People have always had photos taken with the mounted guards here. Even before social media!

I don't post other people's messages on my messages. Moreover, what is terrible in this case is that tourists make work difficult and additionally stress the horses by literally climbing on their heads.

When will people learn these Horses are there with the Guards to Protect the Crown they are not on display to be petted they are Service Horses equal to the Royal Household Cavalry Guards there should be a boundary to deter the mobs of people from stressing the Horses out...

The horses are not annoyed by people coming close, patting them, or even holding the reins (the latter is a rule only humans care about). Some of you people seem to have never been around a horse in your life. Here's the facts: most horses love being patted and fussed over. But horses do bite sometimes. Not out of maliciousness, but out of mischievousness, especially if they are bored.

I used to work with horses (teaching horseriding and stable management etc) and I know from experience that some horses bite and / or kick because they're mean ...but as one of my 'Horse Masters' said, "Horses aren't born bad, they're made bad by men" (he meant by humans in general, through unkind or ignorant behaviours).

How would the tourist feel if someone kept touching them? People should respect the feelings of animals.

If you read the sign you might be able to spell reigns, not rains.

I'll say once again , they're on a public footpath in Whitehall under Westminster council not MOD , any form of barrier would be potentially dangerous to horse and Trooper !

I was really impressed when that group of wheelchairs and scooters showed up. Horses usually spook at new and strange things. So very well trained . And the horse was more curious than anything else.
