Great review, thank you for this. We really fancied this but hadn't seen much about the internal space but you've sold this for us and we can't wait to get it!! Cheers guys

Hey Guys! I have just brought a 2013 Mitsubishi Triton for my Camping trips. I am going to be putting a rooftop tent on top of this Ute and without a doubt you guys have definitely sold me this item, as you say if you only get a year or two out of it, it will be nothing to go out and get another one which would mean $2000 in 4 to 5 years isn't to bad. Great work guys and thanks for the review.

really like your set up, 270 awning and the solar on the top. I have got one since October 2017, went to Fraser straight up, it is a bit noisey with the wind and rain on the beach, no leaking whatsoever and I didn't get any red dust on mine. My problem is that the plastic roof top cracked on the dege and where the hinge is, and the color fading on the roof top and the rubber edge. (I park out on the sun and the heat gets to above 40 degrees). But I just got the full refund, very happy with their customer service since heard so many bad comments on them. Don't get me wrong, it is a great tent, especially for this low price, would recommand to anyone but make sure park under the shield.

Thanks for the review. I'm a bit concerned about the dust getting in. I hope your can sort it out. I'm also concerned about the structural strength of it. I'm edging towards an Alu cab gen 3. They are dearer but built very strong and you get 3 entry points. Can't you get in thru the end window of this tent?

@andrewbaker3620

Purchased one myself....Only thing i didnt like was the condensation on the inside of the roof. Mind you it was very cold over night...minus tempetures which in the mornings left the bedding wet.Did find having the tent on a angle/vehicle..head higher this did reduce. Buy overall a great buy. Also a great review guys...and yes its water proof
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
Not sure how you’d go about fixing the condensation? Other than to install an air vent. We didn’t run into condensation issues, because we had all the windows open due to the heat....the couple cold nights we had we still kept the head and feet ends open a smidge just to keep some air flow going through it.

Thank you for the great review, long awaited as no one has done any yet that I'm aware of. It will be interesting to see how it goes in the rain, as the end windows don't have an external flap. The only thing stops me getting one, is it won't fit under the carport! :(

Thanks for the review. Been looking at buying this tent since it came out but couldn’t find a decent independent review. Was worried about the dust but doesn’t look too bad. Unfortunately the weight and the height might prevent me from getting one unless I can lift my carport a few cm.

Yeah no doubt the JB’s are a better tent.....but is Aus they come with a $5000 price tag, this tent was only $1100. We don’t have the intense winter conditions here and we plan on replacing the tent in 4-5yrs time with a trailer......so in our situation it didn’t make sense to get the JB.

Great review guys! I'm looking at putting this on top of my Sahara but only have normal roof racks (decent rhino racks - 3 of them). Do you know if this could fit over my three racks or do I need the flat rhino steel racks?

It would fit across the three rhino cross bars fine. In fact it would probably be easier to put on and mount on the cross bars than the flat rack.

Hey mate, loved your video very helpful. I recently bought one myself but I'm not sure if I have the ladder in the correct spot. Where It clips it goes inside the tent which means you can't fully zip up the mesh do I have it in the right spot because the instructions that came with it don't specify where it should clip onto. Is yours the same or am I missing something?

There might be two little cavas slots, that are below the entry. I was able to screw two u shaped cable style saddle into the edge of the flat rack. The u shaped saddles are found in bunnings shade sail stuff.

Looks like a good unit and certainly a lot cheaper than a similar, electrically operated and better appointed tent manufactured in South Africa. The access ladder is a lot more substantial than the other one as well. As the saying goes, "you pays your money and you makes your choice". Personally, I would choose one of these and spend the money saved elsewhere.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 5 лет назад
Same thinking as us - certain places you can make savings, certain places you can’t.
@6wilbur9
@6wilbur9 5 лет назад
I have a James Baroud Evasion Evo tent. Pretty similar, but more expensive. From my experience, the JB is not worth the extra $ and is not suited to Aussie conditions. It does not come with midge proof screens - heaps of small bugs get in through the mesh. It also has dust ingress traveling through the outback and when it rains, water comes in through the solar vent. The JB fibreglass exterior also seems to craze/crack easily and the mattress barely passes the sleep comfort test. The only upside is the ease of setup and packup. I'd definitely try the Kings one if I hadn't already committed to JB (in fact I could have purchased 4 of the Kings ones). Cheers for the review - wish I had of seen it sooner.

And you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned 4-1.....that’s exactly what Jess and I discussed....and seeing as we plan on getting a camper inside the next few years, it didn’t make sense to spend up big....thanks for your insight, it’s interesting to hear from someone who has a JB.

Great review, thanks guys. I've been thinking about buying one of these roof top tents to put onto the top of a 7x4 trailer. Just wondering about when it is windy do you recommend not setting up the window shades.? Also can you zip and unzip all of the windows from the inside of the tent.? If it is raining can you get enough ventilation to stop too much condensation inside.?
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
It took us a while to work out the best technique of having the window shades up for ventilation, but stopping the wind blowing the metal poles which hold them up out of their slots.....was actually to zip the sides down to increase the tension which worked the best. The head and feet windows are close able from inside the side access canvas is outside the fly screen, but can be closed from inside the tent still (if needed). Again we didn’t have any issues with condensation, but we always had some flaps open for ventilation.

@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
If your referring to a normally roof rack that has sides, it would be difficult, as they would prevent the base of the tent being supported. If your talking about cross bars, then yeah it can be installed on them, pretty easily.
@scottperry3089
@scottperry3089 6 лет назад
Hi, is your tent mounted on cross bars or a platform. If cross bars, what type? Great review 😀
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
Mounted on a platform - I custom made it to keep it as low as possible so I could fit it in my car port.....since moved houses and it won’t fit anymore, as such I’ve gone back to my previous Platform (Tracklander Alloy Flat Rack).

Hi Alina - yes you can definitely close everything up from the inside if it starts to rain..... You do however need to stick your head out the window to zip up the door and big side window (that’s is generally how we remove the pills too)

Cheers on the review bud! Gee it weighs a bit for what it is. I'm a fan of it due to its cost and ease of setup, as you say, it's instant. My concerns is its dimensions and lack of awning. I ended up getting the Bundutop same as Overland Obsessed channel.being 6ft 8 also meant I needed it to be longer or risk a shitty nights sleep. Josh
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
All rooftops weigh a bit, I actually thought this one was lighter than expected.....most canvas clamshells are 50-60kg(ish) so it’s not a great deal heavier. I would of liked something that I could load some gear on top of the tent like Alu-cab, but couldn’t justify price. At 6ft 8, you would have been a tight fit in the Kings.....I think you chose well.
@backyard4x451
@backyard4x451 6 лет назад
Great Off-Road Adventures - Graham Reinders cheers mate and yes, I looked at the Alu-cab too but the price was an issue, it took longer to setup than the others (comparison test from Donegal Overlanding channel) and being triangular meant less room at one end however I loved the interior door pockets. Cheers mate

Hello: Thanks for graet review. Could you (or any of the other commenters) share how this roof top tent is affected by high temperatures and sun, ie. is it hot vs. a normal tent (due to the solid black top collecting heat). And also, how does this perform in strong wind?? Thanks, Joost
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 5 лет назад
We found it got pretty hot on our trip up North (Rocks to Reefs).....that was in 40+ degree days & 25-28deg night time temps......it held up really well during the windy section of the trip, especially the latter section through Shark Bay where the wind 💨 is always blowing!!!

guys I've got exactly the same awning and roof top tent. I currently have the kings steel flat racks for 200 series and I've been told by a fitter at the local 4WD place that the weight of the Tent and awning far exceeds the "offload travelling" weight limit for the kings flat racks. I was sure that you stated the exact rack model you had in this video but now I can't find it. Can you please tell me what racks you've got and how you mounted you awning to them? Thanks Adam
@regnismada4936
@regnismada4936 5 лет назад
for the record…the fitter at the 4wd shop said that the kings flat racks have an offload travelling weight of 100kg. The tent is 75kg, awning 30kg and the racks themselves 40kg (I think)

Nah not particularly - we kept it closed until the sun had gone down most days, so we could open it and then it obviously sucks air into the tent which is slightly cooler, rather than the hotter 3-4pm sun.

@great_offroad_adventures 5 лет назад
It’s meant to be a 120W panel, but it’s definitely not as efficient as my 120W mono panel......but considering it’s otherwise wasted space and where else would I fit a solar panel, it was a good option.
@jamieh4x4

I just did some reading.. and found one seller saying not to glue or velcro them as they get too hot, and found another site with some helpful advice here. itechworld.com.au/blogs/learn/mounting-flexible-solar-panels And found affordable 200W panels which only 1.1m x 0.8m, might even possibly fit two up there. Hey guys, thanks for the review. I live in SW Qld so it’s hard for me to get a look at these in person and a lot of the photos I find aren’t detailed enough. Can you tell me, do the end windows have zip up flaps to protect from rain? I’m sure they do but can’t find any photos to confirm this. Also, how is the overall rigidity in broadside wind? It looks a bit flimsy when it’s being raised and I wondered how strong it is in a decent wind? I have one of the old roof top types like you had and agree with you, they can be a pain and this seems like a great option. Th is in advance guys 👍🏻🇦🇺

More than happy to help. The end windows have zip up flaps on the inside....protects from rain and can use like a swag to control temperature. No lining inside the roof - solar is a 120W flexy panel screwed and stuck to the roof.

Great Off-Road Adventures - Graham Reinders looking to buy one but rain on the flimsy loud roof concerns me a little. Have you considered lining the ceiling roof with some sound deadening/acoustic material that sticks and then some marine carpet. Would soften any rain noise retain heat inside or keep cooler in the heat. That might be the first thing I do

A little but not excessive.....average about 13L/100km around town, loaded up with fuel water, camping gear and tent was using around 14L/100km. Nothing I’d worry about

Hey mate. It’s just a 110W semi flexible slim line solar panel.....I got it from a local shop called iTechworld. It does okay, but not as great as my 120W mono which I can fit when I don’t have the tent on.

How'd you guys go with ventilation/ insulation? I went up north for a week over new years, and it became almost impossible to sleep inside the tent any more due to the build up of moisture that formed on the inside of the roof from getting cooked inside because of the amount of heat that gets trapped. The tent is dangerous in hot climates. My 'kwiky' was already broken fresh out of the box. And then on the third trip, the legs holding the gas struts sheared clean off at the welds, thus making the tent unusable. I wouldnt recommend camping anywhere near mosquitos either. I woke in one morning to find the tent full of them, I wondered how they were getting inside until I saw them flying through the midgie mesh some how.. In saying that, I do believe that, with making some minimal modifications, it would be a great, practical, affordable tent.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
No issues with ventilation - we left the head/ feet end windows 1/2 open for breeze and the side windows we lowered 1/2 way as well. Only night we struggled with heat in the tent was in Exmouth and it was 28-29 when we went to bed, but wind changed during the night and cooled it down nicely. Shame you had issues with your struts and brackets, I was really impressed with how they held up all trip.

They’re a great idea but, where do you get changed when it is pissing down with rain and you are soaked through. The only option you have is to get into the tent soaking wet which then means everything inside gets wet as well.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
Well you have the same issue with a swag or clamshell rooftop tent or any small tent. What we do is carry a pop up shower/ toilet tent, can stand up and get changed in it if needed.

How durable is the hard cover, could you whack a light weight ladder on top if need be??
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
It’s pretty tough, but due to the space underneath it does flex a little. We keep the ladder for the tent inside the tent (heaps of space), but if you were having to carry a ladder for work on top, it would probably be a bit of a handful).

how does the struts handle weight of solar panel, also is there attachment points or is it flexible panel? thinking of getting one have a 200watt panel on roof racks standard type thanks
@great_offroad_adventures

It’s a flexible type panel which doesn’t weight anything.....the struts handle it fine, because it’s flexi I just sika’d it and screwed it on.

@davydp 5 лет назад
Ok thank you standard be to heavy for panel what size panel you got? Thanks
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 5 лет назад
Yeh a traditional mono panel would be too heavy I reckon.....my flexi is just a 100W panel, nothing huge, it does enough though to run my fridge 24/7 whilst at home and on trips we generally drive often enough for it not to be an issue.

Great Off-Road Adventures - Graham Reinders thanks for the link. Loving the price of this RTT as I've seen similar products but double to almost quadruple the price. Will definitely consider this one. Additional questions, I've seen the Bundutop RTT which have a light, two fans, and comes pre-wired for solar, does this RTT also have those features? Do you use a fan inside when you sleep? Thank you.
@great_offroad_adventures
@great_offroad_adventures 6 лет назад
Nah it doesn’t have any of those features. We just use a head torch in the tent when it’s dark and we haven’t yet found the need for a fan.....had a couple warmish nights, but just opened the windows some more to get more breeze. In the video I discussed what I’d done with solar - attaching a flexxy panel to the roof and running the cable.

Setup camp after exploring then 🤷‍♂️? It only takes 30sec to pop up the tent and pull the ladder out. The only issue is the next day if your doing a base camp, but it’s a very minor inconvenience that takes 1-2min to pack up......something that we have been able to live with quite happily.

The top isn’t rated for any weight.....I don’t think you could fit a proper mono panel on (too heavy).....I threw the old Flexi panel one, lost my balance up there one day and leant on it and cracked a cell.....new one works alright though.

If it's like most Kings equipment, it will fall apart after a short time, start leaking, parts bend and or snap, kings stuff is ok for the part time camper, if you are using it every day for extended regular trips the more expensive ones are worth it, when you are finished and get a camper you sell the good quality one for a good price, sell the kings one and get nothing for it.
