We were not out schemed. We were out executed. While you did not, many people making this argument point to the lack of trick plays, and bring up the halfback pass on the other side. If Day had called a halfback pass on a critical down and it failed, people would be losing their 💩 right now. The same people would be screaming about toughness or why are you taking the ball out of the QBs hands with the best receivers in the game. Yadayada… McCord did not make the plays when needed and made the big mistake. You can fault Day for a lack of aggression in certain situations, but this is mostly on the players. The Buckeye players did not win often enough against the other team.
In the post game show you said that OSU thinks they're better so they just think they need to do what they do. Then listening to this podcast the entire assumption is that OSU is the better team so it's all about what OSU didn't or could've done. Given this game means so much to you, why don't you spend more time talking about Michigan. Maybe you should talk about what they do well. It's so clear from listening to you that you never really watch them play. You don't even know the names of the players that are now in the NFL. OSU lives in their own head, and they're so sure they're the best, it never occurs to them that they actually might lose. They fundamentally disrespect Michigan. Then, when things start going badly for them, they break. You can see them tighten up. You should watch Joel Klatt commentary on Michigan, he covered almost every game. He gets the team. You don't.
I still don’t understand how that can possibly be an interception. The reason I say that is the receiver caught the ball first, turned to the end zone, and then The corner jumped on the ball while it was in the receivers arms into the end zone. That’s a td. At most it may have been a strip after the catch which again means the receiver caught the ball first in the end zone for a td. The problem for me for the interception theory is that the receiver first caught the ball clearly.
The way I felt about the game was that Ryan Day coached not to lose the game. TTUN coached to win the game and that was the difference. They were aggressive at the right times situationally and made the plays when they needed them. We didn’t, and the game plan felt like a prevent defense nothing special just here. Also special teams has become a liability where I think in years past we took it for granted. The punter was awful and Field position was terrible why do we not have someone that can return punts? If we flip the field or even have one big return this game is different even with the mistakes.
Michigan had 3 o-lineman hurt, JJ couldn't walk on Tuesday, best D back was injured, best D-lineman came out injuerd , no head coach, no linebacker coach, no analyst, so saying OSU wins 7 out of 10 is laughable. More like maybe 1 out of 10. Michigan is just hands down a better team.

UM hasn't punted in 2nd half in 3 years. That is the reason for your losses. This year Mccord didn't help woth 2 TOs, but defense not getting off the field was your biggest problem imo. Day should of force fed Marv once Johnson was out
The off season fixes: hire an elite special teams coach with elite kickers, hire an elite qb coach and hold open qb competition, offense line recruiting sucks and day needs to fix it so that osu line is generally better on run over Michigan, and Knowles needs to turn up qb pressure with 5 blitzing occasionally. In short the offense needs to score 30 plus against Michigan and Georgia with no turnovers.

I think it's a bit delusional to think that regional rivalries aren't going to lose value with the 12 team playoff. If you lose that game and then win the National Championship, the take away isn't going to be stewing for a year to play your rival again, it's going to be that you're the champion.

Hartline is a great recruiter but can we start looking at his coaching. The wrs don’t get any separation. The QB has to back shoulder every long ball. McCord needs to go btw. He just doesn’t have it and Day needs to start understanding this rivalry or get out.

I think our defense should have been more aggressive all year. Last year our db’s were terrible. Even Burke until towards the end of the year. So we couldn’t afford being aggressive. This year we were very solid with our db’s. I would have felt comfortable leaving them one on one with Michigan if that is what it took to be aggressive. You have to have a feel for the talent you have and I don’t see that right now.
I am going to say up front that I am a huge OSU fan. However, if OSU/Michigan played 10 times this season, then I think OSU wins 3 or maybe 4 of the games. To say that they would win 7 times is a bit homerish.
Turnovers was the difference in the game! Our defensive line couldn’t get pressure on McCarthy and we gave up an easy run by corum! I believe we will be better next year but, it’s hard to not see meka marv & trey not get a big championship in their career at O State!
Maybe the best part of this is OSU fans actually feeling better about this game based on the score (though they never led) despite Sheronne Moore being the coach. Same fanbase that thinks their 2011 loss doesn't count because they had an interim coach.
May be an unpopular opinion here, but I think Ryan Day giving up play calling is one of the worst things that could happen. He is great at scheming things up and did a much better job play calling this year. The uncomfortable truth these guys don’t want to accept is that he is handcuffed due to the limitations of his QB. So many times each game where Ryan was aggressive and a guy was open down the field for a big play but Kyle was locked on to his first target or skipped through his reads and checked it down too early. Watch some all 22 film and quit with these lazy takes. Day is a great play caller, the QB just consistently failed at executing the right play.

The further removed we get from 2020 clemson, the more I’m concerned we have an OC and QB coach at head coach. Which… the most similar case to him in the sport is… Lincoln Reilly. Hoping he can get rid of that stigma.
CJ in 2022: 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 7 yards per completion, QBR 70, and 23 points at home. McCord 2023: 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 9 yards per completion, QBR 89, and 24 at Michigan. The defense was the problem! Michigan’s last punt was 3:23 IN THE FIRST HALF. They scored with every possession after that. They were never stopped once in the second half. To lay that at McCord’s feet is the fans thinking with their hearts and not their heads.
I guess I'm the only guy doesn't see Ryan Day as an offensive play-calling genius. I see either great contested catches or dropped dimes for most of our big plays. Every now and then I see us fool the opposing D with misdirection, but not often. Our recievers can't block anymore, including tightends. For being the offensive coordinator at OHIO STATE, he left a lot to be desired in O-Line, and QB play in a year with the best defense we've been able to field in a few years. This stings, but xichigan was far more creative on offense with a O-line coach calling plays. Also not sure what its says about our LB'er room when we have to rely on a guy with one shoulder. X lost a lot of their best players to injuries during game but had enough. How does a guy not line up right on a punt? Frustration

Feels like this doesn't give the defense credit for the turnovers. Both were forced turnovers to me. The second one was on the protection. JJ has had turnover games so I'd blame the Ohio State defense for not getting a turnover.
Gotta have a duel threat qb. These past 3 seasons of pocket passing qb’s has dampened our run game completely. We’re so dangerous as a team when we have a qb who can run and pass. I appreciate Kyle for everything he did this year, but he cannot be the starting qb for OSU next season.

Great podcast. On the game. The one thing that I find really silly is the notion that this "vindicates" Harbaugh. It doesn't. He is still a mediocre at best coach. While TTUN’S stealing signs, 6.7 ppg allowed for defense. After stealing signs stopped, 17+ points per game. Ohio State’s offense scored 24, nearly 4x the cheater defense and +7 on the non-cheater defense. This game came down to a single play: McCord’s first interception.

We missed Latham Ransom big time on defense…big time. Sonny Styles was stretched too thin. You can’t have a guy who was trying to cover the tight ends coming down in the box to spy McCarthy. Unfortunately, that’s what we had to do. Next Ryan Day couldn’t figure out how to use Cade Stover?…he was a non-factor. That was huge. Emeka Ebuka is overrated and has never lived up to his hype…same with Julian Fleming. Why we can’t use a couple of our younger wideouts is a mystery to me. Messed-again had only a couple of highly-ranked players on defense yet they were able to stymie our offense. That’s on Ryan Day. Finally, Kyle McCord was exactly the same QB at the end of the year he was at the beginning… Slow Starter Inconsistent. Unable to see open receivers. Bad decisions. Not athletic enough. When your QB is not a threat with his legs, you give the defense an edge. That’s just football 101.

Can you explain how our offense wasn’t the issue in 2021 ? If they were so good => why couldn’t they score even 30 points in 3 different games ? 2 were losses. CJ scored 7 points in the first half vs Oregon….. and threw an INT at the end of the game much like McCord but worse because he wasn’t hit as he was throwing. How can we call those OFFENSIVE UNITS elite => 8 or 9 out of 10 because they weren’t! CJ started SLOW in a handful of other games that season too. Kyle lost on the last play where he didn’t get protection up front. CJ had ZERO points => zero, in the 3rd quarter.
They made every catch. They put themselves in positions to pick the ball. Whenever we got momentum they took it right back. Another very conservatively called game on both sides. U have to hit the QB & make at least 1 big play. They were playing as if they had 4 downs. We were playing as if we had 3. Hartline deserve some criticism bc his WRs aren't getting open in most of them drop the ball at least 1 time a game & u can't in this 1. U have to try to prevent any interception if possible. Kyle is serviceable but not exceptional. When u're not a dog, no pocket presents, don't run & have trouble with the easy 1s it's unacceptable. It's easy to beat up on weaker opponents. What I seen is 1 team wanted it the other was hoping for it. It's unacceptable to lose 3 in a row 4 yrs without a win. I'm not crazy to think Ryan Day should be fired but I'm at a loss for words just wondering what the hell is going on for this to continue to happen.
Day must see a lot of himself in McCord because he chokes under pressure just like he does. McCord is too limited to be an OSU caliber QB and it's unacceptable to just return with him as QB #1 next season. Day needs an athletic QB that can throw and use his legs to move the chains. His statue style QBs limit the entire offense.
Fire Parker Fleming then hire James Laurinaitis as a full time LB coach. Then have the offensive coaches coach special teams also, if there isn't too much on their as is.
Marvin Harrison was the target for the two passes that resulted in interceptions. He was a docile and an incompetent receiver. On each pass he gave up on the pass and allowed the Michigan defender to out fight him for the ball. He won’t be a successful receiver in the pros. He’s a talented but not an aggressive receiver.

There needs to be some staff changes. Ryan needs to find a good OC like a Shawn Lewis. Sad to say but LJ needs to retire and we need to get a younger DL coach who can both recruit and develop. Parker Fleming must go. Lastly, Corey Dennis should move on and we need to bring back Kenny Guyton and groom him for OC. Knowles, Laurinitis, and the two DB coaches, Justin Frye, Tony Alford, Keenan Bailey, and Hartline should be kept. Time for a staff "come to Jesus" moment.
