I lived the happiest years of my life there between 2008-2011. I hope one day I can live there too!!!

I was a student there in 1976. I remember the row of wooden shops on the main road, one one which was a coffee roaster. You could smell the roasting beans all over town. Bentalls was the posh shop, and I got my first hifi from Laskey's there! Happy days. I love the vibrancy of Kingston.

Nowadays the posh shop is John Lewis!! 😄

I used to love Kingston, I visited many tines as a boy in the 50s. Then I moved nearby in 1979, it wasn't so bad then, but now it's dreadful. The market is a total disaster as a market, and many of the historic shops have been defaced. Driving through at night is awful due to drunks in the middle of the road, and for me, walking in the evening is an absolute no-no. I left the area for more pleasant surroundings.

Blast from the past, this is the Kingston of my childhood. Most of the river frontage on display here either side of the bridge was demolished & replaced in the late 1980's with new retail buildings. I wonder who all these people filmed were, & what went on to happen to them over the next 40 years?

I think they were just ordinary people buying things to eat; it's a fruit and veg market after all. A lot of those shown are old, so I'm guessing most are dead, and those who aren't, are old now.

My old neighbours, Jim and Dot ran the wet fish stall. Both are long dead now.

I remember Kingston well from the 1970s right up to the 1990s. It changed a lot in that time alone. I remember the Coronation baths that was probably already closed when I used to walk past it and then knocked down in the 1980s.

I have recently moved away from Kingston. I loved it when I first lived there. It has changed completely for the worse.

I live in Kingston now and would have appreciated more footage from then. The market was more of a market back then -- nowadays there's a small market along the eastern side but most has been given over to food stalls now and of course there's no traffic anymore, it's all pedestrianised. I really like seeing how people dressed in bygone times, especially women -- many more skirts and dresses than in recent times, although if this was shot in that summer then it's not really surprising.

I moved to Kingston from Chelsea in 1973. I loved it. I am still there near the park. Still love part of it but it is now multicultural and very different. Not a market town any longer, but more part of London.

1974 ~ I contributed to the notorious sloooow moving traffic from bridge to bridge along the notorious A308 . Kingston ~ great times once I got in! Probably much better now ;-)

Kingston is still fabulous and a lovely place to live by but good to see the "old days". You don't realise just how many improvements were made, we tend just to remember the mistakes and lament their passing!

Kingston is finished as a bustling market town. It's lost it's character and is just another boring builders development site now. So glad I moved away when I did. It's just a ruin of the place it was !

We are not all dead, just retired, I worked on the market starting as a lad in 1960 working after school, Saturday's and holidays, packed up in 1994 and I am still in touch with some of the others who like me loved the old Kingston and always reminisce about the market and what we used to get up to.

Not all dead fella, I am 56 years young and was born at Kingston Hospital... in that hot summer of 1976 I was 11 years old... Star Wars came out the following year and went to the Odeon to see that in 77! So noooooo..... there are quite a view 1000's of us between 50 and 80, that remember these times! So not sad, very fond memories seeing this video.

Hear hear! I am 77 and was 27 when I moved to Kingston. Remember all of it well. but the destruction had already started then in 1973. I still love living here as we are blessed with great surrounding areas, river and parks, restaurants and cafes. @@freddysquirenaranjo4859

I’d like to let you know that the neighbouring town’s population is 50% korean and Kingston itself is full of restaurants and shops from people of many different nationalities! And there’s a Greek Orthodox Church!

The people in the market were paying in coins.. but because of inflation over the past 42 years today they would be paying with Notes!

Kingston has been having the character ripped out of it by retail development chasing shopping trends for almost 100 years now. Much of its character has been destroyed. The Council are responsible for encouraging it chasing retail revenue. Only the ancient markets precincts are off limits. It's disquieting what's been lost by this means & replaced with poor standard retail boxes. The curse of being a shopping centre town, Croydon town centre has been harmed in the same way.
