I've tried a few mobile phone based solutions for GPS navigation over the last year, with varying degrees of success. But have I finally found one that works for me?
In this video, I'll take you through the main set up steps for using your Kiox display for navigation. I'll test it by trying to search for a trail I don't know and share my thoughts on the whole setup.
Many thanks to Christoph for helping me with the filming.

Sorry if I haven't replied to your comment on this video. I have received some notifications, but have been unable to see the comments and therefore unable to respond. Thank you to woudreus for suggesting taking a look at SchweizMobil app and to grzesfajny for suggesting openmtbmap.org. I will certainly check them both out 👍

Very nice explanation! I got into komoot similarly and love it due to the detailed maps and the amount of people posting their ride recaps to find new trails and tours. Instead of mounting my phone directly to the handlebar, I went for a top frame bag with a plastic cover: the phone is well protected, can be plugged into my e-mtb's display to charge it for the constant screen use and I can operate the most basic functions through the plastic cover without taking off my mtb gloves...this does take some practice though. The bag even doubles as storage for my multi-tool and a tiny first aid kit. The only thing I miss with this solution would be to have easier access to the phone for taking pictures during the ride...taking it out of the bag, unplugging it from the display and taking a photo is still a bit too much hassle. Your video gave me some other ideas, but I'll still need to think twice whether I want to shell out into a Kiox upgrade kit and replace the detailed komoot map for just the spaghetti line of the planned route. I'll likely look into trying other top frame bags first.
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland 3 года назад
Thanks! The top tube bag sounds like a much better option. What gloves are you using? I've seen many gloves that claim to enable you to operate screens, but there seems to be quite a difference in how good they are at this. I was really concerned about the spaghetti line as well, but it was much clearer than expected. I'm keen to see how it fairs later in the season when I'm using it much more.

@@TrailTrackerSwitzerland I'm using Shimano Long Gloves (www.velofactory.ch/Shimano-Long-Gloves-black-M). While they're not the most robust or warm gloves, thumb and index finger work well enough for panning or zooming while navigating the map. Really interesting video. I was an early adopter to Komoot and they very kindly gave me world mapping as a thank you. I too find it works really well 99% of the time, rerouting is very quick. I've never really had any problems with stopping and looking as I just have the speaker on and put the phone in my bag or pocket and just follow it that way. If you go wrong it soon tells you off 🤣 only thing is on some videos you can hear her voice a little too much 🤣

Glad you liked it. We aim to please! I kept missing the voice directions due to trail noise and perhaps my poor hearing, so often ended up having to climb and/or hike-a-bike my way back onto the correct route - not a trivial undertaking in the mountains! For planning purposes though Komoot is excellent.

This is a good solution... We just plot a route and bang it onto the Garmin and we're off. The only issue is that it's a "bread crumb" route and doesn't re-calibrate when you have to detour. However... We have used it successfully to ride from Munich to Venice without any issues. Regarding your phone battery drain... It's the screen man. If the screen is off, you'll be good for ages... If you're not into buying something specific... This should be baller! ;D Nice vid mate!!

Great video very informative although I’m still a bit ‘old skool’ like you mentioned and mostly rely on looking at map before I set off, maybe stopping at certain points for quick check on Trailforks and then finding out where I exactly went after the ride on Strava 👍😂
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland 3 года назад
Thanks fella. I've actually stopped using Strava. Because the trails I ride on are predominantly shared usage, I was concerned about the way it encourages people to try and compete for faster times and the potential for an access ending accident with a walker. The heat maps, however, are a super useful tool for finding the trails others are riding.

Great video as always. I've been a Trailfork user for quite a while but I agree with you on the poor mapping in most of Switzerland. Quick question related to the trails you can ride a bike on. I've heard that in Canton ZH it is illegal to use the bike on a Wanderweg unless there's a sign that bikes are allowed (not sure if it's true or not though). Do you know anything about the legal aspect of going down a trail that might be pedestrians only? What are the signs riders should be aware when following the GPS?
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting. As far as I know, it is allowed to ride on 'Wanderwege' in the Canton of Zurich, unless it explicitly states that it is forbidden (Fahrverbot). The important thing is to always give way to hikers and avoid times when there is a lot of foot traffic. In all the years I've been riding here, my encounters with hikers have been almost exclusively positive.

@TrailTrackerSwitzerland

As far as I know, the only one that works for navigation is the Kiox. What I don’t know is whether this functionality will be improved with the new 2022 Kiox. I believe you can export rides from the Bosch ebike connect website to Strava.

The Nyon has it's own built in maps & navigation and connects with Kamoot via the Bosch web site too. I guess it connects with Strava, but not totally sure. The advantage of the Nyon over the Kiox is that you don't need to have a mobile phone in the mix. It will find it's own routes.

To be honest, I've reverted to just using the voice directions in komoot on my phone. Overall it seems to be just about as accurate and requires one less step to transfer the GPS file to the Bosch app. Having once destroyed a phone by mounting it on my bars, the only upgrade I would consider from my current setup is to buy a dedicated GPS and mount it on the top tube

Oh no I’ve just ordered my Kiox, perhaps I should cancel ! I do like the fact that you get a power meter with the flow app as well as cadence etc, all handy if you are training, but perhaps gps would be significantly better would you say ?
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland 9 месяцев назад
@@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons A GPS would be better for navigating. But there is one feature on the kiox you don't get on a GPs that I could never give up: a battery percentage indicator! It makes managing the battery so much easier and removes all range anxiety.
@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons
@JoeMurphysGuitarlessons 9 месяцев назад
Well with the kiox being hard wired into my e-bike, worrying about battery life would not be an issue. I’m guessing in conjunction with Komoot kiox should get me where I need to go, yes undoubtedly gps will offer more detail, but like I say it won’t tell me anything about power output cadence etc unless I start laying out for all the accessories needing to provide me with that data

It’s certainly never going to compete with something like a Garmin. Another issue I have recently discovered is that just because a trail is on komoot doesn’t mean it is on the Bosch app, which can lead to some very strange routing when the gps is imported.

@@TrailTrackerSwitzerland Joseph here. In two days I'm scheduled to have my display updated from Purion to Kiox. Prefer Kiox because it can charge my iphone and the navigation with Komoot. Can you connect your phone to the Kiox while at the same time connect your phone to bone conducting bluetooth headphones? One last question--can you provide more detail on your comment that just because a trail is on Komoot doesn't mean it's on the Bosch app? I thought you had to download the trip from Komoot to the Kiox via the Bosch app. Do some routes fail to download??? Thank much for your video!
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland
@TrailTrackerSwitzerland 3 года назад
Hi Joseph. Unfortunately, I never use headphones while riding, so can't tell you whether or not you can connect to the Kiox at he same time. In answer to your second question: When you plan a route in komoot, you need to transfer the route to the Bosch app. It is the Bosch app that takes care of all the navigation while you are on the move, communicating the directions to the Kiox as you go. The Kiox itself is just displaying the route information and not operating as a GPS. I planned a route on komoot and then when I transferred it to the Bosch app, it automatically rerouted me because one of the trails wasn't on the Bosch map. There might be an option to preserve off-grid segments in the Bosch app, but I haven't had time to investigate yet.
