‘KIRAC 8: The Art of Simchowitz', a film about the Los Angeles art dealer Stefan Simchowitz. In his own unique way, artist Stefan Ruitenbeek observes Simchowitz’ daily life, capturing his movements through the colourful biotope of millionaire art buyers in Los Angeles.
KIRAC?
About a year ago, keeping it real art critics was first heard of when a mysterious video project surfaced on RU-vid: a short film in which the creators Stefan Ruitenbeek and Kate Sinha used a well-constructed yet playful argument to annihilate the work of award-winning artist Saskia Noor van Imhoff. Further episodes have popped up since, each one showing the careful dissection of a specific case related to either art or artist. A throng of die-hard fans now follows this process with a mixture of pleasure and horror.
KIRAC is in search of love, in the form of truth. It uses that sincerest and most impossible Enlightenment fetish of all: dialectics. In other words, the belief that the truth can and will emerge only from reasonable discussion; the belief, therefor, that discussion and criticism is always permitted, and that in the end, each opponent is really an ally in this overriding search for truth. An impossible ideal, for people don't want reason, people want to win, and the truth will always serve this purpose. KIRAC is no exception.
In lieu of real adversaries, KIRAC has become proficient in building imperfect enemies into nearly worthy opponents. Episode 6 on Renzo Martens (the artist who wants to gentrify the jungle) is a good example: in 45 minutes, Renzo’s character is wildly overrated and then thoroughly crushed on that very premise. The real Renzo is a lot less impressive than the KIRAC episode would have you believe. KIRAC’s continuous goal, then, is to go above and beyond the art it’s discussing, leaving the viewer with more than just a deconstructed work of art. Meanwhile, its enemies grow bigger and more advanced and the stakes are ever higher. Only time can tell if KIRAC will succeed in transforming fiction and belief into reality.
'KIRAC 8: The Art of Simchowitz' is a film about friendship and loneliness. About trying to befriend a successful art dealer by harshly criticising his taste in art. Stefan Simchowitz turns out to be a force to be reckoned with, an antagonist who both seduces and disappoints - as expected, of course. He’s charming and intelligent, enjoys letting his guard down and is impervious to criticism. Simco is chaos and does not believe in dialectics. Stefan Ruitenbeek understands he must watch and observe. The film is an intimate portrait of an extraordinary man who has the rare talent of truly believing in himself. Ruitenbeek observes Simchowitz’ daily life, capturing his movements through the colourful biotope of millionaire art buyers in Los Angeles.
KIRAC is supported by Paul van Esch & Partners Art Advisory.
"Kirac is one of the most promising projects in recent years. Rebellious, perversely funny and crazy independent. Exactly what the art world, which suffocates itself following and examining its own codes, needs. Watching those same codes and sources be questioned so exactingly is painful and hilarious at the same time. Kirac has the potential of growing so much bigger and evolving into a great and profound work of art on the psychology of our time, using the art world, the artist, the work and their environment as metaphors. These are the only art films I watch through to the end. The fact that this film has an art dealer as its subject is an added bonus.”Paul van Esch

this doc is excellent! very well edited/paced, interesting and entertaining throughout. simco is extremely fun to watch and listen to. i loved the entire exchange at the LA gallery about art vs. decoration - i immediately rewatched it multiple times. KIRAC is amazing and i can't wait to see what you make next.

It seems selling personalities is much more important than selling and/or finding "artists" these days. Hardly surprising given the results we see in art galleries.

he's wearing a French designers Bourgeois interpretation of a dock workers hat as he moves art Through Time and Space, he is much better art than the trash he is buying. (There is no vizor in order to avoid gales and to stay snug on the head, and ears free to be attentive to the sound of the waves.) from the hat shop [I guess if it accumulates capital it cant be trash]

This is excellent. So much to unpack. It deserved a re-viewing. I am sympathetic to this guy. I think his heart is in a good place. He is so transparent, which is also why people may dislike him, but I like that. So real, so entertaining. I see him as a robin hood character - selling to the rich and giving to the poor proletariat artist.

At first I detested Simco but after a bit I got to like him for his honest but arrogant view of the art world with all its pretentious bla bla bla. The narration was just as cynical along with the hilarious mispronunciations of the English language. I watched it to the very end and would like a sequel.

I think that Mr Sefan has a good point when he assume to run for like "I'm seeling art into networks that we're gonna build the value"....rather than being speculating or be waiting for santa claus.....indeed it is a good way to run up values and the same time to construct real connections and cultural assets. Good film!!

Tried to look at it as a German tv documentary, but it didn't work. Than I looked at it as an "Slapstick" and a piece of drama, but it could not hit me. Finaly I looked at it as a sort of "Pulp Fiction" (but without guns), and it worked well, very enjoyable..

I still fail to see why this guy is criticised. He´s empowering artists that he believes in, injecting cash where he deems appropriate, being his genuine self. Yeah, that's some a-hole. Personally, my will and excitement to be involved in art resurrected after watching this.
@barendbe
@barendbe 5 лет назад
Most artists won't like him because he is a kind of predator to them. Once they are powerful enough to not need him they either go away (Oscar) or defy him (Christian). And as Simco said himself: artists have some sort of moral weight that makes them impervious to criticism for some reason. I think this documentary gives a very intimate and tries to understand Simco. Looking at him critically shows his motivations and the world he is trapped in that makes him such an entitled prick.

Supreme art is a traditional statement of certain heroic and religious truths, passed on from age to age, modified by individual genius, but never abandoned. The revolt of individualism came because the tradition had become degraded, or rather because a spurious copy had been accepted in its stead. [William Butler Yeats]

Pretentious bullshit. Stefan is a privileged baby that values no one else’s opinion but his own - he says he’s not insecure - fact of the matter is, every single human being is insecure - he out of all people should know that art is not normative, it means different things to different people. He’s disrespectful of artists and their work. He should not be considered a role model by any means - Stefan along with other artists in this doc spew anything that comes to mind that they think sounds sophisticated. This was highly entertaining - I didn’t take it serious.
