It’s that time of year again.
Kirameki is an ED that easily gets overlooked at first. When it first appears as the ED in Your Lie in April, much of the show is still developing its premises, and it gets lost behind the hype of the OP, Hikaru Nara, and then overshadowed by the second ED, Orange, which is the ED for the more emotionally climactic portion of the show.
But then it makes a reappearance in the last episode, but not in its original, indie J-Rock sound; instead, it’s been transformed into a soft, piano-violin-voice piece that underscores the closing scenes of the series so beautifully that every time I hear it it evokes an emotional response. The piano is so delicate, the violin so tasteful in all the right, bittersweet ways, and Hashiguchi Yohei’s voice so gentle, that it creates the perfect wave of deep, sonorous sadness coupled with a surprising dash of gratitude and joy.
It’s so perfectly unexpected: the tune that we had become accustomed to, that we had written off as just another ED, suddenly takes on new color and meaning.
Even when we hear the ED at first, we’re only taken through the first verse, the first half of the last chorus, and the second half of the first chorus in that order. None of those lyrics imply anything other than what we’d expect from a generic ED. But when it plays in the finale, we hear the loss in the second verse and the longing in the last chorus.
The sentiments in the song shift so beautifully, detailing the joy of being together, to the realization and reality of losing someone important in your life, to longing for their presence, to finally accepting the memories that were made with the most bittersweet, yet accepting, smile.
All this was hidden behind the bouncy instrumentals, fun choruses, and happy leads of the full version. They got us good.
This song is especially poignant for Kousei in this light, but discussing that would involve spoilers so I’ll instead discuss why it’s poignant for me haha.
As you may know, it’s one of my goals to eventually write an arrangement for each one of the songs played in YLIA. However, I didn’t expect to have written one so soon since I wanted to wait until I had a bit more experience (whatever that means) so that I could really make it “good” and “special”.
Come June-July, and I hit a pretty rough patch going through a breakup, which you may remember from my Blue Streetlights video ( • Blue Street Lights (藍色... ). But right after I finished that arrangement, one of the things that I thought to myself was that I didn’t want to remain embittered or regretful that things played out the way they did or that I even engaged in the relationship in the first place; I wanted to be able to see the highs and the lows, feel them, and be thankful that I was able to create such a unique set of memories with someone who meant a lot to me for a period of time.
And so even though I definitely wasn’t in that place in July, I knew I’d want to have the arrangement around for later when I was there and finally able to say all that I wanted to say.
Fast forward several months, and in November I found this arrangement after forgetting about it since July. I started learning it and recorded it in January.

(continued from description) It’s definitely become one of my favorite arrangements that I’ve written. I started soft with the acoustic version to capture the emotionality of it. It starts sparse, allowing the melody to be highlighted in the verse, but then gains a bit of texture moving into the pre-chorus. The way I approached this was quite similar to how I did Blue Streetlights. But after the delicate chorus, I decided that I can’t play the whole piece this way. Where’s my joy? Where’s my ray of light shining through the clouds to dispel the darkness of my memories and recast them in a new light? That’s exactly what happens at 2:04. In my mind, it’s literally as though my world becomes colored in pastel once more, the grayscale is lifted and vibrant, saturated color is restored to my vision. But this story wouldn’t be complete if only one party came to this conclusion; no, both people, despite things ending, need to come to this conviction, which is why starting at 2:24 I shift the melody between the top and middle voices to simulate a conversation, with octaved sections indicating a singing together of the voices. And finally, the last chorus became an all-out ordeal, a final grand catharsis and a final grand acceptance. These large chords in this high of a register were saved specifically for this purpose, so that the moment of the finale could be larger, more heartfelt, and more lavish than all the rest. In July, when I recorded Blue Streetlights, the whole song drove to the last lyric of “Will you miss me?”. Now, with Kirameki, the song drives to the final lyrics of a triumphantly blended mix of happiness and sadness in the words “Thank you”. So, did it reach you? I hope you enjoyed my arrangement of Kirameki from YLIA. I wish I could have played it better for you, but unfortunately my current living situation doesn’t allow me to practice on a decent instrument often enough. However, that does mean that I have different focuses in music at the moment, which may or may not include some arrangements coming soon! Oh, and the suit is a bad Kousei cosplay. I had to borrow my brother’s, which is why the fit is a bit off lol. Until next time, - Watt

Amazing arrangement and completely agree with you preferring kirameki over orange since the emotion behind it seems more passionate to me and resonates more than the pure melancholy of orange. I'm gonna have to buy the sheets and start learning this next week. Your Lie in April is honestly probably the only reason I'm still playing piano since I watched it after quitting lessons after competitions started getting stressful and annoying with playing pieces I didn't want to play and school got more time consuming, and each year the annual rewatch gets me practicing more.

Your arrangement is wonderful and beyond. This is an example of what defines anipiano to me, capturing the impressions left behind by wonderful anime and inserting ourselves as artists to convey our own feelings, share our own stories, and bring others into our world of wows, tears, bliss, serenity, and understanding through the piano as a vessel. Thank you for sharing this with us, delightful video. The smile at the end of the performance told me everything I needed to know.

This actually made my eyes watery. In my modest opinion, One of your most emotional arrangements so far, and the description thereof is beautiful too. Kudos to you Watt-sense

Hands down this gotta be the best cover of Kirameki out there! The incredibly soft first half really helped a lot in making the more energetic second half shine as bright as it did; the flow is really superb!

I recently went through a similar thing with a relationship and I’m now also getting to a spot where I can look back and just appreciate the time I had with them. Thanks for the arrangement, maybe it’s time for a 4th rewatch of YLIA 😂

5:18 I also love kirameki more. I prefer the "movement" of the song over Orange which is more mellow. And I find it more emotional and nostalgic for some reason like a goodbye..

After hearing Kirameki in the final scene, it's really changed how I viewed the song, and I felt like this arrangement seems to encapsulate the feelings felt during this anime really perfectly. While the last lyric "thank you" seems to get a lot of focus because it just perfectly summarize what Kousei wanted to say in two words :'), I would like to bring attention to the other lyrics: Even when I'm depressed, I find myself smiling 落ち込んでた時も 気がつけば笑ってる With the two of us, the world came back to life 二人なら 世界は息を吹き返した On the usual way home, the rhythm carved with footsteps いつもの帰り道 足音刻むリズム After the rain, the gentle smell of the wind blowing through the city 雨上がり 街を抜けてゆく風の優しい匂い While sharing the same time, the miracle that we were able to spend together 同じ時間を分け合いながら 二人で過ごせた奇跡を I want to connect from now on too これから先も繋げたいんだ ちゃんと目を見て伝えたい The hand I wanted to hold was yours つないでいたい手は 君のものだったよ It was a hand that could communicate everything with the way it was held 握り方で何もかもを伝え合える その手だった It has to be you, not anyone else 他の誰でもない 君じゃなきゃだめだよ I wanted to be by your side forever いつまでもそばにいたいと思えた Even if I look back, I know I'm not 振り返ってみても いないのは分かってる But I feel like my name has been called again, and I look around なのにまた 名前呼ばれた気がして 見渡してみる If I turn the corner, I feel like I can go back to those days 角を曲がれば 歩幅合わせた あの頃に戻れるような The cherry blossom arch I'm dyeing the leaves orange now 桜のアーチ 今はその葉を オレンジに染めてるけど The smile I wanted to bloom was yours 咲かせたい笑顔は 君のものだったよ Those cheeks were beautiful red like the trees that colored the town 街彩る木々のように 綺麗な赤い その頬だった Memories scatter, feelings welling up 思い出が舞い散る こみ上げる想いを I flew to the endlessly distant sky どこまでも遠い空へと 飛ばした The voice I wanted to hear was yours 聞いていたい声は 君のものだったよ It was that voice that seemed to pass through my ears and envelop my whole body 耳を伝い体中を包むような その声だった Every day since we met, everything is irreplaceable 出会いから全てが かけがえのない日々 It will be in my heart forever Thank you いつまでもこの胸にあるよ ありがとう In a sense, the upbeat nature of music is as much as a disguise as the upbeat nature of Hikaru Nara (check out Mother's basement video on the OP) and disguises the answers that Kousei has to Kaori's letter: "Every day since we met, everything is irreplaceable/It will be in my heart forever" . So when the sentimental piano and violin version (how symbolic) is heard, the true nature of the lyrics are revealed. The hollowness, the pain, the joy, and the love. May Kaori and the rest of the characters in this series carry on in our hearts.

Hey man! Good job as per usual and I really like the suit, no pun intended but it really suits you. I was just wonder if your you'd consider doing a video on how you mic your piano. I'm aware of the video where you talk about video creation but I think it would be very useful to dive deeper into the microphone positions. Other then that wonder video and looking forward to more!

Iam curious about something. Do you always count inside your head? Because I try to count but when there is a 16th note surrounded of 8th notes I just lose count. Any tips to get better at counting? (not sure if I had the terms correct I didn't learn the terms in english)
@jjjj-wk9gt
@jjjj-wk9gt Год назад
Why always count, just use a metronome to get the rythm right and that should be enough
@WattKeys
@WattKeys Год назад
No, I don't always count inside my head. I prefer to think of it as feeling the "pulse" or beat of the music. For example, when you listen to a pop or rock song, if you let yourself bob your head to the beat, that would be the pulse. So instead of counting, I feel the pulse. But sometimes if there are rhythmically difficult sections, it might be hard to align the notes with the pulse or the pulse might get thrown off or shifted. When that happens, I like practicing with a metronome and subdividing the pulse down into smaller chunks before putting it back into the original beat. For example, if you're struggling to feel the 16th notes in a 4/4 meter (so the places where you'd feel the pulse is on the quarter), then I would subdivide the pulse into 8/8, so into eighth notes instead of quarter notes, practice it that way until I can feel the 16ths in that subdivision, and then put it back into quarters. Hope that makes sense and helps!
