The pure genuinity and curiosity "Do you fear me?" is asked with is chilling when you stop to think about it.

According to the game manual Zero sees itself as a benevolent force. Saving worlds from their own free will. If all life is Zero nothing will hurt anymore, if all life is Zero nothing will die, perfect order out of chaos.

A fitting battle. Zero can’t understand good emotions, Kirby can’t understand bad ones.

This boss FREAKED me as a kid. This song truly captures how I always saw him: A being of darkness and chaos, mimicking a angel.

I just learned that it has a tail of thorns because it is the root of evil, never caught that before

You know, one consistent theme of Zero's design is its one bloody eye. One who dares no dream, never closes its eye, so it is bloodshot. Literally.

I like the different parallels between Marx and Zero 2's song such as "At least I dare to dream" and "I dare not dream". but also how differently they view Kirby. Marx calls him a "demon in pink who can't think what I can think" belittling him and making it look like he's the villain of the story. While Zero 2 calls him "warrior of the stars" or also "you who stand blessed under starlight" he knows Kirby is the hero who was born to stop him and refers to him as such, not so much as praise but so much as stating facts , probably aware of both Kirby and his origins.

If anyone is curious anathema has two meanings, the first one is “something or someone that one vehemently dislikes” and the Second one is “a formal curse by a pope or a council of the Church, excommunicating a person or denouncing a doctrine”. And I believe both could fit in this since 02 looks like a Biblically accurate angel, but he also detests the light.

Honestly, this fits Zero perfectly. Unlike most other final bosses, he's perfectly aware of everything. He does not sing "look at my sad past", "look how powerful I am" or "I was right all along", he rather sings about things that are true in a metaphoric way that aren't played that much attention at, such as "light surrounded by the dark", sounding like he's perfectly aware Kirby is the hero and that he is just darkness.

I hadn't even thought about it before but holy shit, 02 actually IS based on an Ophanim! The spinning "wheels within wheels" are in the background, while the thing you actually fight is the "spirit of the living creature within the wheel"

I think it's super interesting that 02 doesn't refer to itself, but to just "the shadows" it doesn't explicitly say that it itself is the shadows until "everything will fall to zero" It sounds more like a warning, that the shadows will come, that everything is in danger, not a threat, not a promise, but a warning, and as several have pointed out, this song is also quite sad in how it depicts 02. especially the "Do you fear me?", it doesn't sound like "Because you should." it sounds like a genuine question. Honestly this is so well written even by MotI standards

Kirby doesn't care about your greater cause. Everything is beyond his understanding. All he understands is you are making his friends sad. That's all the reasoning he needs.

kirby must now face something he will never truly understand: nihilism.

The interpretation of Zero Two here is pretty awesome to me. No asking for sympathy, no re-framing Kirby as the villain, no trying to justify his actions. He is completely committed to his role as Kirby's antagonist. He lives for it. In fact, that's all he lives for, to the point of not being able to comprehend positive emotions, and even when he asks if you fear him it isn't trying to make you afraid, it's a genuine question. He wants to know, if you fear him. And you should. Because a villain who is ready to play the role of the villain, ready to oppose the hero with everything they have, and who understands that the hero is a threat, is an utterly terrifying force. Then in the game he just kinda cries at you

I love how Zero in a way knows he’s going to lose, so he constantly reminds Kirby that he’ll always be watching, as dark matter will continue exist as long darkness, hate, and agony is felt across the land, for that it what zero and dark matter is made of… it’s sad that dark matter CAN actually feel emotions other than sadness as gooey is an example of this but they’re just to stubborn to notice….

I don't know a lot about Zero Two but I want to point something out: They start out sounding almost emotionless as they begin the first few lines, as if this isn't something they even remotely feel anything towards but as the song progresses, they show small signs of emotion which progress until by the end you can hear this is something they are getting almost....angry about. Notice how it sounds intentionally flat as the first lines are given, it comes across as if this is something that was meant to happen no matter what Kirby does - at least in the eye of Zero Two. It doesn't feel really mocking as they sing about Kirby flying to take them down, only challenging the pink blob. The emotions just build as it goes on but the line "I weep, I scream, I dare not dream!" feels almost sad to hear when Zero Two claims "Only in dreams can we awaken!" I can only imagine a character looking saddened in some way as they utter those words. The way the emotions build throughout the song yet Zero Two doesn't try to excuse their actions or get any sort of sympathy, empathy, etc out of Kirby, only building up to a question that you'd expect to be some asking for pity or something, we get the chilling line "Do you fear me?" not in some triumphant villain shout but in the voice of an angel with little care for what stands in their way. Zero Two isn't asking it for the ego boost, it sounds more....genuine? It sends chills down my spine, I don't imagine someone saying it with some mocking look or a snarky smirk but rather someone with a marble like emotionlessness in their face, as if a statue was asking it, looking down at you like you're nothing. The ending feels pretty awesome too, all that build up doesn't slowly leave, it drops with the final words so suddenly. From the beginning to the end, Zero Two fought without holding back for a moment, never begging for life or telling Kirby that this isn't what's right or something. Zero Two just keeps trying to take down the hero, letting nothing stop them until they're put down by planet popstar's pink protagonist. There's something to it all that I can't describe well but this really feels like listening to some harbinger of the end times, something with such an alien way of thinking that they don't seem to feel any emotion at all. Or at least, none positive. They are apparently dark matter after all.

Ya know... I find it interesting how subdued Zero in this is in his lyrics compared to some other villains like Marx, Dimentio, and ironically even fellow eldrich abomination Lavos. While most of the others are dismissive of the good guys Zero actually addresses them directly and uses the term 'we' and 'ours', even asking about the characters feelings almost as if he's seeking some form of connection but he flat out struggles to comprehend the idea of anyone being anything but miserable, and if the 'dare not dream' line is anything can only see ways for things to get worse. Ironically this means that despite being a walking bloody eyeball of pure misery he doesn't go through the breakdowns Lavos and Marx do.... after all he wouldn't be happy even if he won and the painful emotions associated with loss are already his entire existence so really its just more of the same to him.

We need an entire Kirby the Musical set that's just Significant Characters and Bosses for the series, all with different perspectives of the same events, and end it all with Void Termina, making references to the Bosses' lyrics and Kirby's Dream Friends making references to the rest of the series songs

I love how this is not "Look at me, I'm sad", "I'm the most powerful being" or "My ideals are right". This is just Zero wanting to devour the people, and then the planet, and then the sistem, and then the galaxy, and then the universe...

I feel personally based on the lyrics "gaze upon me. Do you fear me?" I feel in this moment.. Kirby would feel not fear....but empathy for 02...even if for a mere moment.

It’s crazy that the most dangerous enemies Kirby faces might all be members of his own species. Makes King Dedede’s fear of Kirby becoming a monster without proper guidance all the more understandable and Meta’s desire to see him get stronger more alarming

You know a villain in the Kirby franchise is truly beyond hope when they completely break the demeanor the franchise has and is genuinely unsettling.

So I know I already commented here once, but goddamn, after listening to this on and off over the last month, I think this might be my new favorite MotI song. And now I'm gonna talk about why even besides the great references to Kirby lore. 1) In the first half of the song, we just get this flat and unfeeling delivery, almost clinical in how 02 speaks. It just states what it sees and what it believes, those being a world of infinite darkness and the idea that anything can be broken given enough time. 2) A mention of dreams, much like in Marx's battle to keep the motif going. 3) The reference to Macbeth with "sound and fury," and the quote it's pulled from seems to perfectly capture 02's perspective: "Life is a but a walking shadow...a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." 4) The perspective 02 has regarding a light in the darkness of the sky. It views this as a tiny speck amidst an empty and vast void, whereas a "glass-half-full" perspective could see a bright light shining in spite of the darkness around it. 5) I personally find the line "You who left the doorway open, into your hearts, into the stars" a terrifying idea. Almost like we let this darkness into ourselves, let it fester, and then let it spread it's influence across the entire universe. Followed up by the fact that as long as a shred of that darkness still exists, it will never truly be gone for good. 6) 02 actively calling itself a "nightmare" really solidifies that it views itself as the villain of the story, as well as paying a bit of service to another villain from the series. 7) "The MIRACLE of shadow rising, all that MATTERs now colliding." Very clever. 8) Love the wordplay of "everything will fall to Zero." 9) 02 essentially calling out Kirby saying that "you may be able to gain the power to defeat me, but unless you can keep it, then I'll always come back and eventually you'll lose." 10) "Rise and fall, this is my call" being open to interpretation. It could be a command for Kirby to continuously rise against the darkness, or it could be a statement of 02's fate, to rise and fall in an endless loop. 11) "I dare not dream" being a parallel to Marx. Whereas Marx did dare to dream and ended up getting everything he wanted before Kirby stopped him, 02 can't even bring itself to try because even if it wins nothing will really change. It won't feel any sense of accomplishment or joy if it defeats Kirby, it'll just keep on spreading darkness until there isn't anything left. 12) Reference to Ophanim, which we can pretty safely assume is the inspiration for 02, being a biblical angel with a single eye. 13) 02 questions whether the endless loop of it spreading darkness and Kirby rising to defeat it is their only purpose as polar opposite incarnations of the god of destruction, or if there isn't a point to anything at all, which in a way there isn't. If the other will always reincarnate then there really isn't a point to winning, losing, or even trying in the first place. 14) I interpret 02 asking whether Kirby fears it not as an attempt at intimidation or sympathy, but as simple curiosity despite the answer not really mattering to it either way. It just wants to know. 15) "Across the endless eons we have come so far, seen a life reflected in the Crystal Shards" is not only a cool way of dropping the title, but really captures the idea that this battle never really ends, it just stops and starts. And notice the use of "we" calling out Kirby as what is essentially the same thing 02 itself is. 16) Overall the tonal shift in the song after the first loop. It almost sounds like 02 is actually experiencing emotion as the lyrics grow more intense in the final chorus before simply vanishing once it's defeated once again. Somehow you gave this almost personality-vacant character some of the best characterization I've seen done in under 4 minutes ever. Would absolutely love to see an extension of this, as well as your takes on songs like CROWNED and Void.

2:45 These lyrics are pretty cleverly written, because instead of being the “look at me, feel bad for me” thing I was expecting it was going to be as it was being built up, it was “look at me, be afraid”. It really sets home the idea that Zero can’t comprehend positive emotions like sympathy or compassion. As far as Zero knows, there’s only fear and sorrow.

This song is great until the “Everything will fall to zero” hits, then it becomes F A N T A S T I C ! This is definitely one of my favorite MOTI songs!

All these dark and deep lyrics...meanwhile in Kirby's mind is a carton of milk falling over.

It isn't a Kirby game without a boss that either A: has a super serious backstory or B: is just plain nightmare fuel. Speaking of which, I'd love to see a Sectonia cover. Dirty and Beauty/Sullied Grace and Moonstruck Blossom are both fantastic.

I've always loved the presentation of Zero. No words, little story. And yet it tells a deeper story than some of the "best" written narratives of the modern day. For those that don't know, Zero's (reportedly) entire motivation is that it wants to reduce everything to nothing, as no one wanted to be its friend. Zero's truly a representation of the twisted results of someone steeped into despair and loneliness to an extreme. Lashing out in negativity in all forms, which I love how Dream lands 2/3/64 REALLY set the scene throughout the game to show how dark the Dark Matter race really is. Their presence alone can corrupt entire regions, effortlessly consuming the very will of anyone they choose. The victims can't even resist, literally the only way to free them it actually beat it out of them.

Can we just stop and appreciate how perfect these lyrics are? Like it's exactly the dark and deep profound stuff that kirby hides under its thin veil of cuteness. And not only are the lyrics good but they're so flawlessly synced to the music I don't even like this song itself that much but listening to "can you feel the rumble of the coming storm" (not even mentioning literally every other amazing line) is like I've been struck with a lightning bolt of serotonin it's so good

The reveal that Zero and Kirby are both incarnations of Void Termina makes this battle utterly tragic. Brothers driven to fight to the death... Because one only knows dark, and one only light. They could never be friends. Only enemies. FUCK that’s sad.

Throughout the Kirby series, there are little hints of ancient civilizations that had worked miracles, becoming godlike, solving the riddle of entropy several times over, and eventually dying out, often running afoul of their own ambitions. I feel like that gives some context to this. O2 knows that everything eventually dies out. He knows that everyone and everything is doomed. From that standpoint, why fight it? How long would you be willing to fight for something that's going to die anyway? I guess that's where O2 and Kirby disagree. One side would rather get it over with, while the other is willing to hang on as long as they can.

After a quick google search, Ophanim is a type of angel from the Old Testament, characterized as a collection of rings or a a wheel lined with eyes. Ever spinning. Ever watching. It’s one of those things where it makes the line even better with the context. My applause, Alex.

Everyone's praise is well deserved. Both the theming and sound are marvelous! But I will note that the word you're looking for at 3:36 is "paean" I think, pronounced pēən (pea-en), related to hymns and other religious song and/or poetry.

What scary to the most about zero2 for me is that we know he can not comprehend positive emotion, so when he looks at Kirby he see a ineffable being.

It sounds like he secretly is begging Kirby to kill him. Even though he knows the nature of dark matter and it will only be a temporary relief from his agony and anguish…

I always imagined what this villain would sound like if he had a voice. At first I thought it would sound distorted and demonic sounding but this voice actually works better. His voice sounds divine. Like an angel. Which fits with what Zero takes the appearance of in this fight. It also would make sense considering he probably is an incarnation or manifestation of Void himself which is a revered god by the Jambastion Religion organization.

Zero Two is literally referring to the judgement of the flood that wiped out humanity in biblical stories, wow.

I think the reason 02 takes the form of an Angel in this fight is because it thinks it’s the good guy. It views emotion and free will as torture, sadness and regret eating people from the inside. Sure, sometimes they were happy, but what was a brief moment of happiness when inevitable despair was always on the way anyway? But as Dark matter, you don’t need to feel, you can simply…exist

"Only in dreams can we awaken." Some people have connected this to the Marx video, but it goes at least a bit deeper. Bosses like Zero Two are only accessible if you reach maximum positivity/completion, ie collecting all the crystal shards. Come to think of it, Marx WAS the first mainline boss with a Soul form...

Keep in mind Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was rated E for Everyone, and had a final boss that was a Biblically accurate angel whose eye bleeds Been loving the Kirby covers you've done, all fit the character really well

One thing I really like about this one is how it's just, continuous. It changes tone, but doesn't pause. Feels very fitting somehow.

perhaps it wasn’t intentional, but it feels as though a few of 02’s lyrics are subtle jabs at previous Kirby antagonists, and specifically ones who have appeared before Kirby 64, lemme explain -“Cry for the one from nothing born” so, this one is a little different from the other boss references, because this is kind of reference to himself. Zero-Two is who the song is about, but the nothing from which he is born is the OG Zero from Dream Land 3. This lyric is about 02 grieving (and most likely spawning from) the death of Zero. Zero has failed so now Zero-Two has come to succeed. It’s widely assumed that Zero and Zero-Two are the same entity, but it’s never been directly stated so I figured I’d add this one in anyway. -“Now come warrior of the stars” this one has perhaps the weakest argument for it, because he’s obviously addressing Kirby but Meta Knight is also a Star Warrior and depending on the game or anime lore, one of the few remaining after Lord Nightmare mostly obliterates them. -“From the darkness comes the nightmare born to swallow up the light” the Nightmare Wizard’s most well known kirby game is Nightmare in Dreamland which came out after Crystal Shards, but it’s actually a remake of a game which was made before Crystal Shards, Kirby’s Adventure. In the context of the song, the nightmare in question are the Dark Matter coming from the darkness to do what they do. In moi’s kirby songs, Dream seems to be symbolic of free will and the ability to achieve your dreams and in the context of this song, Dark Matter stealing your free will would therefore be a nightmare. In that way, 02 is saying that he and the Dark Matter are more of a nightmare than Nightmare himself. -“The miracle of shadows rising all that matters now colliding” this is an obvious reference to Miracle Matter of the same game, the fake out final boss. But what’s interesting here is that it’s a bit of a degrading line, lemme explain. So the Dark Matter are seemingly a mindless soulless extension of the two zero’s will, they all look the same, they all act the same, they are Zero. But up at the point of Crystal Shards, excluding the Zeros themselves we’ve only seen two Dark Matter who are distinct from the others... Two Dark Matter who are actually - special... Dark Matter Swordsman formed his own consciousness and feelings, he felt envy and hatred towards Dreamland because he was bitter and alone and hated seeing the happy folk on the planet surface with friends. Then there’s Miracle Matter who looks and acts very distinct from the rest, he has Kirby’s copy abilities, he’s white like the zeros he looks like a d&d dice, has a ton more eyes and is much stronger than the average dark matter. But this particular lyric destroys what makes him special, because to 02 he’s just another Dark Matter he is nothing. ALL the Dark Matter are miracles of Zero, and to an angel (which 02 is) a miracle is an unremarkable common occurrence which it typically just does. To 02 Miracle Matter is nothing. -“The power that is borrowed will not guarantee tomorrow” at first glance this is just a jab at Kirby and his copy abilities he “borrows” from the all the little obstacles he fights. But if we keep in mind that the lyrics also seem to have little jabs on previous antagonists, it could also be interpreted as one against Marx. Despite stealing a wish that grant him godlike powers, he failed to stop kirby (and perhaps died from the incident) his tomorrow was not guaranteed and he certainly would stand no chance against the power of Dark Matter. -“The shadow swallows your regime” well kirby has no regime, but King Dedede does and all it took was one lowly Dark Matter Swordsman to envelop his kingdom and possess him. And he says all this so carelessly, perhaps not even realizing that these other antagonists exist because to Zero they are nothing and at that point he was the greatest threat Kirby had ever faced. Edit: I forgot gooey was a thing, there’s 3 distinct Dark Matter at the point of Kirby 64 but my point still stands

I don't know why, but the lines "you who stand blessed under starlight, gaze upon me, do you fear me?" almost seem like they're referring to the player in addition to Kirby. When compared to 0-2's (quite literally) hopeless situation, the player surely stands "blessed under starlight." Additionally, 0-2 is famous for being ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING when compared to the rest of the game, and the question "do you fear me?" almost seems to recognise this. This song is very cowabunga. :]

This is very cool! I like how Zero was portrayed here. I don't see them portrayed as sad, but it makes sense for them, since they're probably really old, and they've seen so much destruction, they might've caused some of that destruction themselves. It brought back some memories of playing Kirby 64's multiplayer minigames with my siblings! Thank you!

I absolutely loved this take being from Zero 2's perspective, it perfectly reflects their pained existance as a being unable to experience joy. Great job to the MOTI team

3:28 This part is soo eargasmic, especially the way you vocalize "crystal shards", keep coming back just to hear that line lol. And others have said this already but I'll also say just how wonderful these lyrics fit the more somber interpretation of Zero's character, which I prefer.

At the very beginning of the video/song (0:01) the noise that plays just beings major anxiety to me. Just the way it sounds so ominous, and also the fact that it's so loud. Seriously though, if you hear this noise while in a dark room RUN.

This is perfect. The best part is that these lyrics are from Zero Two's perspective compared to the more popular Edobean lyrics being from Ribbon's perspective.

From what I understand of Kirby lore, dark matter and Kriby were both created from Void Termina, who is both the creator and destroyer of the universe, depending on if he is summoned from positive or negative emotions. In this verse, Zero Two is basically saying that existence itself is calling for its own destruction, in the form of Void Termina or Dark Matter. Kirby sure is existential for a kid's game, huh...?

The lyrics really shine here, mixing interpretation and lore. The music also is really good, knowing when to follow the melody in slower parts, and knowing when to compliment it in faster sections. I'm really interested in hearing something similar for Void Termina, really love this

My favorite parts are "can you feel the rumble of the coming storm?" And "GAZE UPON ME! DO YOU FEAR ME?!" The first because it's so good and fast and the second because it's sooo passionately delivered.

Dang this was such a bop! I can just imagine kirby and ribbon looking at each other like "do you know what this dude is talking about??" LOL

I love the line "ophamin our charriot awaits" because they are fighting inside one, an ophamin is an angel in form of multiple wheels with eyes, always spinning, and are said to be the weels in God's throne. 2:23

This song hits a lot harder if you look at it through the lens of Zero knowing Kirby is another incarnate form of void and Zero is trying to explain to Kirby how the universe really works from their perspective.

The dissonance between Zero being born from Dark Matter and the angelic motifs in Zero Two's design is a lovely thing, and the biblical reference ("Ophanim, your chariot awaits" referring to the angels representing the "wheels" of Ezekiel's vision of the chariot of fire) was a brilliant touch. It's a dramatic and climactic scene full of emotion, done beautifully by everyone involved. Well done!

We need to cogratulate ourselves with the only guy that decided to do subtitles for this video, which is italian and he somehow translated it perfecly and made it sound good. Congratulations, LeaffyLeaff, you have earned my respect

"Is this our purpose? Or is nothing we're meant for?" "Gaze upon me! Do you fear me?" 02 sounds slightly sad while saying this, and THIS has an important meaning to the lore. You see, Zero was born when Void was exposed to pure hatred, creating a being of pure malice whose only purpose is to swallow the entire universe in darkness. Zero is unable to feel love, joy or any other positive emotions, he is the complete opposite of Kirby. The only purpose he has is destroy the entire universe, but what if he actually did, what other purpose would he had then? His only role is the "evil role", but he doesn't know. He's just doing what he was meant for. He was made only to destroy and create havoc. What I want to say is that Zero is actually a truly miserable creature, unable to feel any positive emotions, unable to love, unable to be happy. Kirby is just trying to bring peace to the universe trying to befriend every evil being he encounters, like Magolor or Marx (just some examples). Sadly, he can't do that with Zero, so he has to destroy him... With friendship (unironically)

Man, gotta admit I wasn't feeling these lyrics the first time I listened, but I am so glad I decided to listen again. Knowing what to expect let me appreciate this for what it is. And it's freaking awesome.

I love how you incorporated Zero Two's angel motif into the song. You've made their theme even more infectious than it already was. When I was thinking of how to word this comment, the thought of subscribing briefly crossed my mind. It's that good. The word "euphoria" entered my mind as I was typing the fourth sentence. I read that it was stated in Japanese sources Zero and 02 aren't the same entity, which makes me think a "successor" found and repaired the white mass the red eyeball of Zero tears itself out of. (hence the bandaid). That just brings more mysteries into it...

Exquisite. Kirby 64 was my first game in the franchise, so seeing this horrific cyclopean angel _thing_ was a massive shock. This perfectly captures the dissonance between protagonist and antagonist and the sense of climax that should go with any final boss. Thank you for it.

I do like how zero two looks a biblically accurate angel with the Halo and bloody eye. It's also interesting that zero 2 could be counted as a 4th dimensional being since he knows things beyond comprehension

generally, my favourite verse (well, set of) in this is "ophanim, our chariot awaits to blaze a trail across the sky! is this our purpose? or is nothing all we're meant for? you who stand blessed under starlight, gaze upon me! do you fear me?" mainly cus, as the kirby lore implies, zero was made when Void encountered negative emotions, so it would very much prey on fear, and also the lyrics before the fear part does have zero questioning his existence, like is he supposed to cause all this chaos and destruction? or is he not supposed to exist at all?
