I love that the guitarist from Metallica explains his love for this 1959 Les Paul with the enthusiasm and clarity of a kindergarten teacher explaining the ABCs.
@@_ProTraxhe def had the stoner/wino draw to his voice, but his mind is all there. He perfectly and enthusiastically communicated what makes this guitar so special, and in a way that a non guitar player could understand it.
Peter Green and Gary Moore’s memories are memorialized by Kirk taking that legendary guitar out on the road and playing it in front of millions of people. That’s were it needs to be. Screw keeping it in a museum, behind glass. That would be an insult.
I completely agree, as a massive jimi fan it annoys me how many of his guitars are just display pieces. Iconic guitars should be owned by guitar players who will treasure them and play them, not rich people who can’t play a single open chord
@@probuilder961But, Jay drives his cars, and rides his bikes. He just got over some severe burns that he was hospitalized with from one of his steam powered antique cars. He was steaming it up getting ready to drive it and had a mishap that injured him pretty bad. Jay isn't your typical rich collector, he has been a car guy since he was a kid, way before he ever did a comedy set. His Lamborghini Countach has 80,000 miles on it, which is ridiculous for a Lamborghini, he bought brand new.
Such a humble man for such great talent. Can remember when he was a teenager in a back of a pickup truck with the rest of his bandmates. Got to see him play live in a little bar called DJ's Night Club in Colorado Springs back in 1985 on their Ride the Lightning tour.
One of my fav albums, "Ride The Lighning", and the one that got me into Metallica. "Creeping Death" really impressed me back then. I couldn't believe it when they hit it big with the Black Album. I never thought that this would happen. But I loved it, they deserved it.
To everyone that’s bitching and complaining about Kirk not mentioning Gary Moore, he talks about both Green and Moore in length during the full interview. This is one short that’s cut together from an almost 2 hour long interview.
Yeah I watched the whole interview. Peter Green and Gary Moore are Legends!!!!! I just think its a shame that Kirk hasnt taken better care of Greeny. SMH!!!!
People judge everyone's character through a 1 minute clip nowadays, ridiculous. All because they can't be bothered to do a bit more research when they saw sth that piqued their interest.
Y'know, this is kinda embarrassing but I knew he was so sweet, but I somehow never noticed he is LITERALLY so sweet, thank you!!! I also have no idea what "literally" means!
@@atousonklisten to the early days demos with Dave and then the records with Kirk. He used the “riffs” and changed them up quite a bit and made them 10x better. Look up “jump in the fire” with Dave’s and listen to that solo compared to Kirk’s on the record. Dave’s solos were just fast and had no direction or correlation with the song. Kirk changed a bunch and just made it sound better. It is what it is my guy
@@dansuccessful9794doesn’t matter how lazy are some of his solos, the fact that he created fade to black and ride the lightning solos is already enough to call him a great guitar player
Kirk Hammett is a totally underrated guitar player these days. He is a beast. Additionally he is one of the most humble and selfless guys in rock. You can't help but like him and he deserves the utmost respect for his playing. "Yeah we sell out, every seat in the house every time we play" - Jason Newsted
He's not wearing a skirt, pantyhose and barely any makeup nor has he been having romantic dinners with Trump, so he's no Steven Tyler even if there is a superficial resemblence.
Say what you will about Kirk as a guitarist but nobody can deny the man very clearly has a ton of authentic passion for playing guitar. Dude is like 60 and still talks about his enjoyment of music like a kid in a candy store. So wholesome.
He doesn't play the same thing over an over. I like the fact that every time a new album from Metallica comes out. People lose their mind over how it doesn't sound like whatever they think it should, or any of the original 4 albums did.
Imagine the Magic you would feel as a guitar lover, owning and playing this guitar. Unbelievable, I'm sure he had no qualms dropping over a million bucks on it.
I remember Kirk as a more of a low key personality seeing some kind of Monster when it came on dvd and so on, here he's like big Mama telling wild stories about the Bingo hall back in the 50's.
Kirk finally gets an approximation of the out of phase sound but doesn’t attempt to replicate the touch to get the haunting sounds that gave BB King the shivers.
That's exactly why I'd never want to own a vintage instrument I'd be too afraid to play it and if you're not going to play something because it costs too much what's the sense in owning it? Just to say you own a vintage guitar?
I would love for Kirk to have a RU-vid channel where he tries out old, new and modified guitars and describes their differences and what makes each one unique and different.
Sam Li was the guitar repair man who first shaved down all the Flower Power wall paper Chris Squire put on his Rickenbacher. Squire then put reflected tape on his Rick & Sam Lee shaved it down more & painted it cream white. Sam Li said to Squire, please don't decorate this Rick anymore & Squire said he's never played a Rickenbacher with that sound he had with YES. Thinking loosing mass gave it some mojo.
Exactly! Massive disrespect to ignore the maestro, Gary Moore. Green sold it to his pal, Gary, for only £100 in....1970. Gary had it for THIRTY SIX years !!! until financial troubles made him sell it in 2006. Truly shocking that Gary's massive contribution to this guitar is so frequently left out.
Listen to Hendrix from the Monterey Pop fest gig; that’s the sound he’s talking about. Sounds closer to a Strat through a cranked 100 watt JTM than you’d think
I'm pretty sure Kirk knows more about playing guitar than you'll ever know. Besides, no one has ever heard of you, but everyone knows who Kirk Hammett is
Turning the pickup around by itself won't change the sound. It's wiring the hot and neutral wires backwards that causes it to be out of phase with the other pickup. You don't need to turn the pickup around to do that.
Maestro Peter Green had this guitar for 4 years. He sold it to another maestro...Gary Moore, who had it for THIRTY SIX years, featuring in many legendary Moore recordings. Utterly shocking that Gary's contribution to this guitar's history is so frequently ignored !!! Utterly shocking also that this guitar didn't end up in the hands of someone more fitting. Joe Bonamassa would have been far, far more worthy to have this guitar.
