KIRKLEY AND PAKEFIELD 2 WOODBRIDGE TOWN 1 (HT 1-1)
Woodbridge played their first Thurlow Nunn game of the new season at Kirkley and Pakefield and narrowly lost by the odd goal in injury time.
After 5 minutes a good move by Woodbridge had Kyron Andrews putting a great through ball to Andrew Crowe with only the goalkeeper to beat his shot was smothered by Jordan Smith the Kirkley goalkeeper. A foul on Kirkley’s Kyle Haylock on the right wing had Woodbridge goalkeeper Ben Maidens scrambling across his goal to retrieve the ball before any host forward could latch on to it. Woodbridge were playing controlled football and having the majority of play although they were unable to create any scoring opportunities to trouble the Kirkley goalkeeper. A short corner to Liam Scopes but his shot was off target. A good move by Kirkley’s Kyle Haylock who was seeing plenty of the ball had the Woodbridge defence clearing his centre for a corner which came to nothing. From a Woodbridge corner the ball was rolled to George Bowman who thumped his shot just by the Kirkley post. Most of Kirkley’s attacking raids were instigated by Kyle Haylock who was having a good game on the right side of the pitch. Woodbridge were caught offside on a number of occasions which did not help the flow of play. On 35 minutes Woodbridge opened the scoring. A combination of moves between Taylor Southgate, Luke Mallett and Jack Newman whose centre found Kyron Andrews to side foot into the net. Just on half time Kirkley equalised when Alex Meeken the Kirkley full back run into the box before releasing the ball to Kyle Haylock to score with a cross shot into the corner of the net. This was a little harsh on Woodbridge as they had been the better side.
Kirkley came out in the second half attacking the goal with the slope. During the half there was plenty of endeavour from both sides and there were numerous fouls and challengers which went unpunished. Play was end to end although this half had Kirkley on the front foot with Woodbridge defending well but found it difficult to create any real chances. On 60 minutes Tom Haste replaced George Bowman but the game continued to be scrappy and another Woodbridge change was made on 80 minutes when Kyron Andrews was replaced by James Hubbard to try and add more height up front. Then in injury time Kirkley scored the winner when the ball was crossed to Louis Tilett to slide the ball home from close range. It was tough on Woodbridge as they had fought well throughout although on the second half performance Kirkley may have felt they just deserved the win.
