Norwich United 2 Woodbridge Town 1
Woodbridge retained the side that narrowly lost on Tuesday evening at Kirkley and Pakefield. Woodbridge will be disappointed with the result but will be extremely pleased with the performance when conceding a soft goal and playing with 10 men for 50 minutes.
In the first attack Norwich conceded a corner and Jack Newman’s corner kick was headed narrowly wide of the post by Liam Scopes. A brilliant crossfield pass by Taylor Southgate to Luke Mallett saw his cross into the penalty area go for a goal kick without a Woodbridge player able to reach the ball.
Play was end to end with the defences mainly on top although plenty of attacks by both sides led to chances missing the intended target. Woodbridge were playing some neat football and enjoying plenty of possession against a workmanlike side.
On 40 minutes the game changed, first the Woodbridge keeper Ben Maidens miskicked the ball straight to Norwich’s Louie Henman-Mason who lobbed the ball over the keepers head to give the hosts the lead. Then shortly before half time Liam Scopes was shown a red card when the Assistant Referee put his flag up and informed the referee that Liam had handled what was a very hard shot at goal. Matty Daniels scored but again the Assistant Referee intervened and informed the Referee that the player who has been sent off had not left the pitch when Norwich had taken the penalty. The referee ordered the penalty to be taken again which Matty Daniels scored.
Score at half time was 2 -0.
Woodbridge brought on Luke Taylor at centre half in place of midfielder George Bowman. Norwich started the half brightly but Woodbridge came out strongly and played as though they could get something from the game. Woodbridge grew in stature as the game went on and two good moves led to Luke Mallett and Mark Ray shooting wide of the posts. Woodbridge also had a number of corners which were well taken by Jack Newman and from one of these on 60 minutes Andrew Crowe rose brilliantly to head into the top corner of the net. Tom Haste came on for Sean Rea on 80 minutes. Both teams continued to attack in what was an entertaining and competitive game and there were goal mouth incidents which could have gained further goals. Woodbridge had a number of shots blocked by the Norwich defenders when trying to get something from the game. James Hubbard came on for Kyron Andrews to try and gain a deserved point. The game ended with no further goals but the Woodbridge players can be proud of the way they played, certainly deserved something from the game. With performances like this the future certainly look bright.
Final Score 2 - 1
Woodbridge Team: Ben Maidens, Sean Rea (Tom Haste) , Dale Hammond, George Bowman (Luke Taylor), Liam Scopes, Taylor Southgate, Luke Mallett, Jack Newman, Mark Ray, Andrew Crowe, Kyron Andrews (James Hubbard) , Alfie Stronge.
