I was a Team Diane "Cheers" fan and couldn't imagine the show without Shelley. But Kirstie, with the nearly impossible task of replacing another character, went far beyond my expectations! The finale: "I married a PLUMBER!!" LOL. Such a talent, RIP.

It's incredibly hard to replace a great actor and character but Kirstie managed to do it and did it brilliantly. Then the same thing happened with Ted McGinley in Married with Children and Clarence Gilyard in Matlock.

Funny and beautiful! In the 90s Letterman said she was one of only three celebrities who could give a spontaneous interview and be hysterical. Instead of him having to obviously set up jokes for them. She will be missed and remembered with great affection ❤ (I seem to remember Cher being another one but I could be wrong)

Kirstie Alley was a very good actress. I remember when she was in the later seasons of Cheers after Shelly Long left the show. I also remember when she was in numerous movies and tv shows in the 80s and 90s. Now that I think about it I actually read her biography once and apparently before she became an actress she actually worked as an Interior Designer and she also made an appearance on an old game show back in the day. I just thought I'd mention that little fun fact.

I don't really like comparing Shelly Long to Kirstie Alley as they were simply very good at different things. Losing Shelly Long was a difficult time for the show but Kirstie Alley really gave the song more meaning. It was just a place to get away instead of a place for Diane and Sam to have a love affair. The audience felt as if they could occupy that space with the characters.
@lnl3237
@lnl3237 2 года назад
Insightful comment. Giving the post-Diane years another go now in nightly reruns. Love romantic comedies so my preference will always be for the Sam/Diane years, especially, Season One when all the action took place in the bar. Subsequently, always felt a little wistful watching Sam return to "conquest mode" instead of seeing him try to navigate a relationship and find love. The final scene in Season 5 was so poignant and wistful as well. Glad Sam and Diane parted while still in love.
@kendallrivers1119
@kendallrivers1119 2 года назад
@@lnl3237 I like Diane and the Sam/Diane dynamic was mostly fun but honestly thank God Shelley bowed out and Kirstie came in because the show would've been screwed. The Diane\Sam dynamic kinda ran its course and the relationship never really evolved beyond love/hate sexual tension blah blah blah. I think the relationship between Sam and Rebecca had far more depth and actually evolved from Sam constantly hitting on her and her rejecting him to two kindred spirits that became close friends. I also relate to and laugh at Rebecca's character more than I ever did Diane. But both are great in different ways and I enjoy both eras but my preference is 6-11.
@lnl3237
@lnl3237 2 года назад
@@kendallrivers1119 Thank you so much for your wonderful response and analysis. Agree wholeheartedly that for Cheers to enjoy the longevity it did, Shelley Long's departure had to happen. "Preference" is the perfect word. The way we reacted to the characters was somewhat like a Rorschach test. You connected more with Rebecca and I related more to Diane... although, I'd like to think without her propensity for pomposity. Was 25 in '82 and often felt like "a fish out of water." While my friends were going nuts over "Dirty Dancing" and "An Officer and a Gentleman," I was gravitating toward "It Happened One Night" and "The Philadelphia Story." Like Diane, I wanted to belong and be "one of the guys," but truth was, I was on a different wavelength from most of my contemporaries. The fun of Diane and Sam for me was how masterfully the writers figured out ways for their libidos and cerebrums to "hook up" every now and again. You, the writers and Shelley Long were correct though, there really was nowhere else to go with Sam and Diane and it would've all become rather stale. Guess I just didn't mind the "blah, blah, blah" for as long as it lasted. The writers were right not to make Rebecca, Sam's next love interest, but rather a close friend and confidante. I guess I just wanted more for Sam-for Cheers not to be "the love of his life." But ala the series' final scene, it appeared to be enough for Sam. Thanks again for taking the time to share your opinions about the show. Just love when people care so much about "fictional characters." Says a lot about how much we need great storytellers to make us laugh, cry and wonder about it all.

No.. She's clearly been drinking that night. Not a huge amount but you can tell she's clearly got a buzz on. I used to bounce and I don't drink to excess. You learn to see the signs. And don't forget they serve Champagne at those events. That shit goes down like sparkling water and like Snapps, it takes a good 20 minutes to realize it's working with it's lower alcohol content, but because of it's sparkling fizzy nature it's absorbed faster into the blood stream. So you drink cause you think it's not hitting you but really it is and you end up drinking a little more than you want to.

Just watch Shelley Long`s acceptance speech in 1983 and this one in 1991 and you can see how much comedy changed in that short time. It went from dad jokes and slap stick jokes to hard hitting satire and irony. You can tell by the reaction from the audience that Kirstie Alley is way ahead of them in understanding satire.
@gutenbird

I'm not really sure what you mean by satire though I do know the basic meaning of the word. I do agree that Kirstie was a brilliant choice to play that role as she had so many layers that she brought to the role.

You need to read some history. Your so-called "hard-hitting satire and irony" started with the Greeks about 2600 years ago. As far as American comedy goes, try watching some Billy Wilder. Yours are the sort of posts we see in a culture where reading and studying history are extinct. Gees Louise.

@@northwestprof60 Hey everyone, it seems a highly educated Boomer has left a comment for the benefit of us all. Thank you, Boomer, for placing your valuable contribution in historical context and for not-so-subtly reminding us, as far as American pompousness goes, of how intellectually and culturally bankrupt the world will be once the undoubtedly beloved professor from the northwest with a pleasant personality, and his merry generation of well-read students of history, the Boomers, are extinct. Golly Gee Louise, indeed, is what we plebs will all be saying once there are no longer any experts on Greek satire lurking in the comments of Kirstie Alley videos, ready and willing to chastise those who fail to show proper respect to one of the most accomplished men of all time, a magnanimous acting giant with a cock that puts Parker's to shame. It's almost impossible to accept the inevitability of a new dark ages, a RU-vid devoid of comments urging us all to Try, Just Try watching some Billy Wilder. Billy Wilder!!

I'm glad KIRSTIE won an emmy for REBECCA. KIRSTIE is good at giving her acceptance speech and good with those quips! I've always liked SHELLEY's character DIANE more than KIRSTIE's character REBECCA but when SHELLEY decided to leave the series after the first 5 seasons to concentrate on her film career KIRSTIE was a good addition to the cast as the new manager of the bar. SHELLEY's character DIANE left to write her book and told TED's character SAM she would be back in 6 months which turned into 6 years! SHELLEY didn't come back as DIANE until the series finale at the end of the eleventh season! DIANE never did finish her book but won an award presented to her by Kim Alexis and Mike Ditka for a screenplay she wrote called THE HEART HELD HOSTAGE which was based on RHEA's character CARLA's life. SHELLEY's character DIANE and BEBE's character LILITH are my two favorite CHEERS regulars. CHEERS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!
