The Chinese REMEMBER history but the Europeans (WEST) have deliberately CHOSEN to FORGET. Even to this day , the WEST is still pretending NOTHING ever happened. If the WEST were honest , truthful & sincere , they would never have SHAMELESSLY followed their master US in screaming HUMAN RIGHT !! HUMAN RIGHT !! Yes , the Europeans chose to FORGET. That is morally tragic , lacking in conscience. I am S'porean & i know that part of history. My RESPECT to Mr KISHORE.
The west deliberately CHOSE to erase history. Look at America, they have drag queens protestors who tear down statues and tried to change histories. Culture of the west. Delete history
He can spit in your face and you will still say thank you. That is the art of diplomacy. And that's how he deals with arrogant and ignorant westerners.
The host: We are disadvantaged because we don't know China but China knows us well. Kishore: You have been taking advantage of China, to say the least, for centuries and now you have the nerve to say you are disadvantaged? Read the ugly history of your country before you talk. Well, perhaps in slightly different words.
@@ashleymistletoe Apart from mastering the art of diplomacy, his courage to speak the truth embarassing the westerners deserved great admiration and a solemn salute & a standing ovation.
The west knows what they are doing cause they know they can escape with it since there is no country in the east strong enough to stand up to them. The west knew the only way to stay in power is to destabilize the East and thus the many war inflicted by the west and the many provocation by them too. When and if the East do stand united, this sent not just fear, shiver to the west cause then everything will shift to the East and the west from their past history will never be the subordinate to the East due to their arrogance! And this arrogance can be seen now in everything they do!
Wow I didn't know that it was given to Japan and not back to China. That's so mean. Very very wicked those Europeans. I'm not even Chinese and I feel very humiliated on their behalf.
The Eight Nations Alliance carved up China to share among themselves in the past. They were bad then and got away. These countries are the same today but this time they are going to learn some good hard lesson that they will not forget.
And then they also gave the administrative rights of the Diaoyu Islands (Senkaku), which has always been Chinese from centuries ago, to the Japanese! Isn't that criminal?
Culture exchange and travel will help Westerners to know more about China. Chinese love to travel and venture out to the West. This is how Chinese know so well about the West. Chinese have been humiliated by the West but we understand that it was the older generation and because Chinese are nice people then they forgive the pass but not forgotten the pass and they will not take any gruge against current generation but Chinese will not tolerate current Western generation humility like the pass generation.
The culture and history of Confucius and Buddha influence Chinese attitude and value human and environment. The west is an opposite. It culture has long been violence to neighbors, violence and inhumane are the way of western society. Chinese learn that after 5000 years of war do no good to anyone.
I have noticed that when Professor Mahbubani speaks, people acually take a moment and listen to him in awe and with great respect. People are not wrong in their admiration of impressive knowledge.
@@donaldjoseph3903 Professor Kishore is a deep admirer of President Yew. So, take a deep breath and apologize to Suntan because I'm sure that was he meant.
HOWEVER, i UNSTAND EXACTLY THE CASE the professor JUST MENTIONED. We are very well educated of our history. Especially, the 100 years of humiliation by the European/Americans and he tJAPANese.
Kishore is well verse in the Chinese civilization. He speak frankly and fairly. His wisdom shows what value and virtue of the great Chinese civilization is.
The same goes for Diaoyu islands (senkaku) the administrative rights was given to japan instead. The western and japanese imperialists are still to this day, unrepentant and had gone further by interfering into Taiwan issue.
The japanese politicians are hyprocrites! They look courteous, bow and do what they do in their japanese culture, but they are a group of beasts in human form. Their insistence to pay homage to yasakuni shrine every year shows that they show no remorse to what they did to china and south east asia in ww2. If they japanese were allowed to build their armies post ww2, one can be assured that they will terrorise their neighbours exactly what they did in ww2. Unforfunately, taiwan is willing to be used as a pawn in the game as a leverage to push back china.
@反共抗俄 Sorry. can't read or write Chinese. If u asking about the book. It's good but better just to watch Prof Mahbubani as everything in the book is in the various lectures given by Mahbubani unless u want the book for reference.
Most Western China experts know little or nothing about China; not thru' the Western view or perspective. If anyone wants to know and understand China, one has to go and live in China, study the language and live the culture for years in order to know its true value. Just the Chinese language is enough for those so-called experts to spend their lifetimes figuring out why, what and how the language was spoken and written in such a peculiar way. Remember this is an ancient civilization continuing into the modern age and with centuries of wisdom as its foundation.
No, they do not have to necessarily go through that grind. Westerners just need to be sincere and honest with themselves and China. It is the insincerity and dishonesty of the westerners that is the cause of the rivalry, animosity and sinophobia that reeks the western countries and the US that is the problem between them.
With due respect, many Westerners are racists toward China and therefore China does not figure in their thoughts or imagination. They tinged their racism with the pretence of knowing China with words like love the Chinese people but hate the Communist Party of China. When pressed what legislation of the CPC they do not like, they are hard pressed to name one as the CPC is an organisation and therefore stand or fall on its legislations or measures.
@@spadeysay6846 But it would be good to know history ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T-twlnuvPDA.html It is better to go through that grind than to remain ignorant. On the othe hand: ignorance is a bliss.
@@hangtuah888 You are right. There are some naive westerners who think that their racist governments are anti-China because of human rights issues, such as communism, supposedly lack of "democracy", oppression of ethnic minorities, "forced labour", lack of religious freedom, eating dogs, etc. The truth is the hatred of Chinese and China pre-dated any of these issues ever surfaced. From the 18th century, Chinese people were treated with contempt and undisguised racism. Daniel Defoe in 1719 published 'The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' with rather negative attitudes about China, he considered them backward in religion, architecture and that the Chinese were general inferior to the white man in every way. The British lumped Chinese with dogs in their notorious signs forbidding them into parks in Chinese lands well before the new Hong Kong security laws were passed. Chinese outside China were treated as if their lives didn't matter and could be snuffed out at the whim of the European. In 1740, in Batavia (Jakarta), there had grown a sizeable Chinese community, the Chinese were used to help the Dutch farm spices to be shipped to Europe. But conditions were harsh and the pay was poor. When the Chinese complained against the conditions and treatment, and rebelled when there was no improvement, 10,000 were contemptuously massacred. Now, that is one Massacre the west likes to forget. We have to remind people that the Page, and then the Chinese Exclusion Acts of the US, the only laws specifically targeting a single race were enacted not as sanctions in response to communism (because they were passed during the 19th century), but because, in the words of American politicians and media of the day, the Chinese were "weeds" which might rampage over the lovely white American nation. How the west treated China well before the CPC was even founded is history, but unfortunately it is a lacuna in even among educated westerners' narrow mind. Yes, this anti-China thing is down to racism. Don't let them kid you that it's because of communism or treatment of Uyghurs or Hong Kong or the SCS islands. These are just smokescreens. They hate Chinese more than they hate the Muslims or blacks, and they show it once again in what they are doing TODAY.
@@Zerpentsa6598 Well put and researched comment. Thank you and Happy New Year to you and your family and stay safe. I understand your sentiments as I am constantly experiencing it myself despite being head and shoulder above any Caucasian they can put up to me.
Professor Kishore is able to understand China and the West because he is an asian, lives in asia, integrate with west in his capacity as an ambassador in UN, educated in Singaporean Society with LKY school of discipline and diplomatic outlook. I have full regards for Professor Kishore in his explanation of diplomatic engagement between the east and the west that is filled with logics, history and cultural understanding of the different thinking.
Because he is unlike many in the "White race" especially the "Anglo-Saxon" and today's 'European Anglo-American" who keep thinking they are superior. Although today it is different story. China today isn't China of yesterday. But for the few fools; like banana who thinks the white man's moon is rounder and their farts more fragrant, "exceptionalism" doesn't fly anymore. The British empire is not just gone but dead broke. So broke they had to steal the retirement money from their own old people to save the British Pounds. The Americans aren't faring any better wither with homeless tent cities boom, daily OK Corral shootouts and social decay. It is so bad Americans today do not even know if they are a woman or a man after having looking at what is between their legs. In short, the bald head eagle is turning into a plucked turkey.
What a Great Mind . Kishore is one of a kind human being. A Unicorn. The West, specially the US , have no interest whatsoever to know China history. Even if you tell the US politicians, diplomats, and most of the population,... that knowing China history makes life better for Americans and Chinese. They don't care . The US politicians care about Money. That's all. Money is their God. Eg, Marco Rubio have zero knowledge about China, but he keeps demonizing China in every turn. An awful human being. Unfortunately, but that's the reality.
If the Chinese humiliate the european and american in the 21st century in the same way the Chinese had received centuries ago, then that is equity. That should be the balance. Will the european and the american accept that as a retribution and revenge? But too bad, the Chinese choose to move forward with advanced technology. The european and american can only grumble about the speed of advancement and forgetting that they are still living on their past laurels.
Kishore. I am so respectful of your view in bringing up history that many Europeans chose to ignore when dealing with China. Yes, no one could understand the humiliation faced yet when China revives all of them choose to believe it should never happen at all.
Looking back to history in the last few hundred years, the foundation of most Western powers we seen today was built mainly from the resources of colonialism. Perhaps many would choose to forget but the fact remains true to this very day that they had committed the most brutal crime against humanity. Imagine exploitation and enslavement were their ancestors' building block they have proudly enjoyed but choose to forget the inhumanity their committed.
If I am a Taiwanese , I will be ashamed to be called a Chinese because the newer generation are totally ignorant with the China histories and ethics ..... really puzzling ! China with a great civilizations has provided them wisdoms and discipline when comes to decision making.
I learnt about China’s century of humiliation at the ruthless hands of western colonial powers when I studied East Asian History at A Level. As an ethnic Chinese, it made me sad, angry and very indignant. That was 46 years ago. Watching China rebuild, progress and rise again in the last 30 years, overtaking those western nations that had once bullied, pillaged and carved China into concessions when she was poor and weak, has been very gratifying.
It's not only humiliation, but the amount of suppression and bullying is absolutely atrotrious. The British not only destroy China, but also many Asian lives in South East Asia. Opium was legal commodity sold by British East India company even in Singapore.
We all know the problem with most western China experts... They have never been to China and made their assessment on China outside of China without the understanding of China.
It's way worse than that. These "China experts" have the same mindset as their forefathers who puts up signs in China telling Chinese they and dogs are not allowed in their concession areas inside China.
@@retired3437 I have visited China many times for vacation and business and it is nothing like the negative depiction of China in western media.. just like how the Olympians feel and see when they were in China. You have the option of either seeing China for yourself by visiting or research more or you can choose to be indoctrinated like many wilfully ignorant people in the US. The choice is up to you.

Western naval vessels sailed up and down the Yangtze River for over a hundred years and even up to 1949, English gunboats still tried to sail up the Yangtze River. The vessel was Amethyst. It was only stopped by Chinese shore batteries. Some more warship were dispatched but they were also turned back.Churchill was incensed and wanted to send larger ships to " teach the Chinese a lesson ". Think about this. It still happened in 1949!
When you want to learn about a person or group of people, you sincerely engage with him/her or them. But basically westerners tend to look down on non westerners and don't bother to engage with them. So non westerners have to learn to hold their head high and be assertive in dealing with westerners.
how true it is what is said about the Chinese having very long memory, from someone having lived in a Chinese dominated society like Singapore. It is not pettiness, it is just lessons learned.
The humiliation does not only has it roots in the 1st and 2nd opium wars but continued well into the 20th century (e.g. Boxer revolution, theft and destruction of the Summer Palace). The pivotal event that sparked national populsit outrage and rejuvenation that Prof. Mahbubani referred to was the May 4th movement (1919). This event also led to the strengthening of Chinese communism. Knowing the history and language of China is critical to understand China.
I'm sure the professor is in a way actually telling the European that the Indian also haven't forgotten the humiliation they had suffered from the British
I am not sure what has been taught in history class in India nor how much indians have been told of the looting and 400 years of humiliation by the colonialists, but am amazed by the relatively lack lustre renaissance in Indian politics or its nation building exercise. The bureaucrats there remain largely laggy incompetent and resistant to change, other than for personal gains.
Singapore is a country mixed with Chinese, Malays and lndians who live together, go to school together, grow up together, joint the army together ( every 18 year old boys muz serve 2 years ) and work together as neighbours, colleagues, competitors, friends, etc. so itz no surprise Kishore knows about the Chinese so much.
@@joek7031 Yes. I'm a western bot and I'm programed to target CCP spokes people who hide under a cloak of being neutral. Kishore opinions are the same as the CCP. Are you a CCP bot? CCP is so very concerned with written evidence that it selectively ignores and not on actions. China remembers her own history, century of humiliation. Two world wars have happened since them. Which included abolition of European colonies. If China wants to be selective in history then what about Tibet in& Xinjiang. His WW1 Chinese contribution while valid on help. Those Chinese were not fighting in the front line, how many died? Indian troops did fight & die. People can read about Chinese history if they wish. They shouldn't be forced. That is the CCP pushing their agenda. I read history a lot. Read little Chinese history compared to European. Also there isn't as much on Chinese history. To write history you have to go to source and be allowed to interpret what you read. Cannot see the CCP allowing that..
The Europeans together with US (including you, tiny Belgium) barged into China's Imperial castle and burnt and loot Yuan Ming Yuan, and then took back the historical treasures and artefacts back to Europe, and proudly displayed them in their museums to Chinese tourists. Japan conducted biological experiments on Chinese during WW2 but USA pardoned the whole 731 Troop of Japan and gave them citizenship. Taiwan was taken by Japan after the war of Jia Wu by Japan but the Allies did not recognise this now. South China Sea Islands all the way back to the Ming Dynasty was taken by Japan and Europeans too. Remember before Qing Dynasty was weakened, no other nations in South East Asia has a maritime expedition fleet apart from China. If the Western powers can recognise Indonesia's expansion in the 60s-70s, why cant they recognise what they took from China was China's back then? This is outright racism to say the least. Perhaps maybe if China was as combative as the Europeans things would've been different, but Chinese wasn't, every European knew this, Chinese don't cause problems wherever they go, they don't demand, they don't incite violence, they just keep quiet and work hard - maybe that's why Chinese was seen as sheeps ready to be slaughtered anytime.
Wow didn't know that Shandong Province was given to the japenis after the WW1. My history book did not told me so guess its because was based on british history. My old friend even stated he is proudly british subject. Thank you Prof Kishore for the Truth. From Singapore.
And it was this moment that gave rise to the Communist Party. The party that promised the people that China will stand up and "fuxing". The West poured oil into the fire and made the Chinese even more motivated to avenge
It is great that there is a noticeable drop in the diplomatic tone in the talks of Mr Mahbubani with regards to the current animosity of the US, the west with China. It is quite apparent that the diplomatic language Mr Mahbubani previously used to explain his beliefs as to the reasons for the differences between them failed to get the message across to the US and the west. Time to change strategy and be more assertive in communicating the truths bluntly to his US and western audiences.
Unfortunately the Americans do not listen. Their mentality is one where everyone has a "right" to his own opinion, never mind the Responsibility to investigate and inform himself before forming that opinion.
Prof.Mahbubani is probably one of the most brilliant thinkers in the Global Sphere. Prof. Martin Jacques is another. The European thinkers must acquaint themselves for their own credibility; with these great Asian thinkers.
Many educational systems got rid of humanities (history, literature etc) and replaced it with activist generated meaningless courses. The result is:- 1. No knowledge of the past. 2. Crumbling infrastructure in the west BUT they have pedestrian crossings lights reflecting gender diversity. 3. Western students doing courses (arty-farty, everybody passes) in universities which have no value in employment prospects. Then, the same grasshoppers get envious of the ants that slaved away and achieved STEM qualifications. They were taught entitlements- equal opportunity, yes, it was given regardless and what do they want now? Equal outcomes! The result of pre-school, everyone getting a star mentality.
One should ask whether the west really wanted to understand China. The business fraternity will want to but politicians will want to mould the world view of the laymen. If you hate China, you will not want to read anything that may change that mindset because most of us are not that objective. We always want to reinforce our own beliefs and not to test it. So professor kishore’s book will likely be read by a small number of people.
Most of the Chinese in in the world know that humaliation because Bruce Lee movie Fist of Fury and the opium wars. Queen Victoria , her royal family and the dukes and lords till now lived luxurious with the money they were selling opium...
As an overseas Chinese, I don't really know very much of the historical details of how the Europeans and Japanese took advantage of the weak Chinese then, but i do know enough of the concessions the Chinese were forced to give away, the Opium Wars (and the ceding of Hong Kong to the British), the Marco Polo bridge incident, the destruction and looting of the Yuanmingyuan Palace (Summer Palace), the 'no dogs & Chinese' sign and a few others. The Chinese of my grandfather's and grandmother's generation was humiliated and lived in abject poverty and great turmoil, partly due to internal troubles and greatly magnified by external forces, so much so that many were forced to leave their motherland. My grandfathers and grandmothers were some of them. The Europeans may conveniently forget but not the Chinese!
BC, in the west, schools teach the greatness of their history, in contrast, China teaches how they were humiliated by the west. When u have a good life, u don't aim for a better one, on the other hand, if u have a bad life, well u'll aim to get a better one.
The greatness in their history were wars, massacres and genocides. The biggest genocide in the history of humankind was the massacres of Red Indians in the tens of millions conducted over a century. The biggest thefts in history of mankind were the stealing of the continents of North America and Australia from the original people of the land, by killing them.
Not only Chinese in China, overseas Chinese in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, etc remember what Europe did to their motherland also. Europe should also walk on eggshells when dealing with us overseas Chinese.
To the bananas, the bandits came, burnt down your homes, killed your forefathers, stole all their wealth and became wealthy, and owned your land. Now they threw some crumbs at you, gave you a nice job as a clerk, so you are so grateful. Go read your history and how your parents became poor and lost everything to the bandits. You think the Red Indians are grateful for the reservations given to them by the white men?
i think the west needs to learn how to respect and to be circumspect given what they had done to China. We do see insensitive comments that Chinese should not wallow in history and play victim to incidents 150 years ago. We should be talking about the here and now and the future, those people said. It is this insensitivity and lack of respect of the chinese feelings (driven by history and culture) that is causing the divide and conflict -- maybe intentionally. Thank you Prof Kishore for trying so hard to educate to promote peace
Remember what Churchchill did to many Indians who died during the famine. They took all the food to UK and left nothing for the Indian to eat. They should read that too.
The obvious reason is that being colonial powers, it has tremendous influence over their occupied territories. Hence people in British colonies know all about British history and learn to speak English. The local language is usually suppressed as "inferior" as is the local culture. Hence for the last 250 years large parts of Asia, Africa and S America are exposed to western language and culture. Local language and culture as I have said, is suppressed as inferior. Westerners grew up with this mindset for the last 250 years and now suddenly china is looming over the horizon and worse still, it is an economic super power and a military one very very soon. This caused a PTSD among westerners. Knowing nothing about china, and then to see china suddenly coming up on you is a great shock. There are no 2 ways about it. The west has to get accustomed to the new order. The onus on the west. They have to make the effort. Being violent towards china is not going to help things. Any psychiatrist will tell you that violence does not solve your PTSD.
