The second of two exciting plastic releases from Perry Miniatures this month in the form of these Russian Uhlans. As well as being nice figures in an of themselves, some of the real excitement is to be found in their compatibility for conversion with the Allied Cavalry box set released last year.

In the video, you say you don't use the basic bases provided in the box, what bases do you use/ recommend? thank you.

Difficult to say really, it depends on what you want to achieve, if there is a certain rule set you might want to base them for or just what you think looks good in terms of number of figures on a base, space to allow a bit of dynamic posing or some scope for a bit of extra work on the base itself to make it more visually interesting or diorama-esque. I think ultimately I find the plastic bases supplied a little bit constraining and thing, I prefer at least 2mm thick MDF. If metal cavalry figures probably 3mm for extra sturdiness and lack of warping over time (see my French cuirassiers for example).

Would they work for Duchy of Warsaw ulhans?

I think that question has been asked before including to the Perrys themselves. I can’t remember the exact answer, I think some conversion was required to the headgear and braiding. Probably possible, a little bit of conversion by paint and imagination goes a long way. They have just released a metal Polish Uhlan to go on plastic horses if that’s of interest.

I think they could also be converted to Austrian Uhlans? Polish lancers?

I’m no expert on the Austrian side of things though there are visual similarities. In terms of Polish I had that thought. There are some images of Polish Uhlans with a similar czapka without eagle and sunburst but if need to check my sources to see how legitimate that is. You could fairly easily convert when just by paint to achieve I think. It’s something I’ll cover in the next video.

In a period of stylish uniforms, especially for cavalry, they’re particularly smart. I’m putting a few together at the moment.

Thank you, trying to get back into the swing of things and develop a bit more of a rhythm.
