In this video, I will be going through my clothing and kit list for the Hunter Gatherer Challenge run by Joe O'Leary at Wilderness Survival Skills. There is a strict, very limited list of kit to take on this challenge to encourage you to think about finding and making what you need in order to survive for an extended period of time in the wild. This includes shelter making, making a bed, making fire, finding and purifying water, gathering food and making a primitive hunting weapon. My personal choices were based on previous experience and preferences built up over a long period of time and they worked well for me.
The Hunter Gatherer challenge is a four day, four night primitive wilderness survival challenge set amongst a vast woodland area in Wiltshire, South West England. It is tough trial, designed to test your existing knowledge and skills, as well as your mental and physical endurance.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

I learned to knap obsidian back in college-- no flint here. The only time I ever use it, amazingly, is in the UK-- airline fascists always take my little scissors and pen-knife. Eventually when out and about outside of London I'll find some flint and make a few little blades. Can be really helpful when trying to get into some unobliging food packaging. Each one becomes a fun little souvenir. Cheers,

It's possible to spend a small fortune on 'bug-out' kit trying to cover every eventuality and I'd probably expire from exhaustion carrying the weight of it all! Effectively, Simon says "The more you know the less you need". Thanks for the lesson.

Every piece of your kit 'worked overtime' for you on the challenge. It helped that you added in personal skills to make such an effective bow and arrow system, winning supplementary food items. You organized so much using that Zebra billy: boiling, baking, pounding acorns and the like. I might not have got my head around when to use the billy to boil water, when to use it to forage or even to realize that there was something out there that I could bake in it.

I buy teeny weeny little Vaseline containers (and I mean teeny-weeny!). I decant the contents into my main Vaseline container, wash them out and put meds in them. One I leave with Vaseline in it. The other contains Mylocort which is a cortisone bite and itch cream. The third contains wound sterilization cream. They are TINY - novelties, really. My four Buscopan tablets I sealed into a tiny bit of drinking straw. My paracetamol and Voltaren tablets go into a VERY small pill container. Its not weight I object to - its unneccesary VOLUME.

Great video! I just happen to be wearing my Vidda Pros today since it snowed, is windy and going down to -13C tonight in northern Illinois. The vidda pros have more than enough room for a heavyweight base layer and still allow movement for shoveling and walking my Pyrenean Mountain dog (who loves the winter and outdoors as much as I do.). Looking forward to more great content from your channel this winter.

Liked your 'kit' video, especially the Vida Pro trousers, I recently bought the Fjallraven Granit shirt, a wool/polyester mix with G100 sections, wanted the Pro trousers as well for a four day trip camping up in Glencoe, Scotland, but as a pensioner couldn't really justify another 120 quid ! Hopefully get them another time. Cheers !

Those Alpkit merino wool tops are great. I took the half-zipped collared version with me on a 3 week motorcycle jaunt around Europe recently and it was just so warm. Dried very quickly. Even hanging up overnight in the tent was enough to dry off the worst and fully dried after I put it on in the morning. I would say it rivaled my synthetic top for drying but it never picked up any smells, unlike the synthetic one ! Can't believe we've got the same first aid bag and almost the same contents !!! Must be a bushcraft thang.....

Good kit for the challenge. The only "ding" that would attract attention to me is the Victorinox Swisscard; I would've taken the one with the scissors in it instead of the "Quatro" with the screwdrivers. Tool Logic makes a nice card with something similar that may be, to me, better. All the other items are cool. Taking the battery bank is never a bad move, but there's a bank that also has a great light on it. I believe it's Tommley. Good system. It solar charges as well. Crack on, good sir.

Great choices, the problem I have with wool is I am violently allergic to the Lanolin Oil in it (I even have to watch which bandages I use as they have Lanolin in the adhesives) which means if I super wash to take the lanolin out it no longer stays worm or water repellent. I am trying to find stuff made from Alpaca wool as it doesn't have lanolin.

Thank you. Again, a really well made video and one that is incredibly informative - thank you for taking the time to make it, and to share your knowledge and experience. I realise that it may be a little greedy to ask for 'more', but a question that remains for me is this: given the circumstances (and associated limitations) of the challenge, and the circumstances which you actually experienced, are there any items of kit (over and above what you were 'allowed') that you really wished that you might have had with you? For example, you mentioned an alternate jacket which (had it been affordable!) might have been 'shelter' in itself - and the first night (I recall from) your IG posts, the shelter wasn't yet entirely rain-proof, so (just an example, again) did you find yourself wishing for a tarp, maybe? Thank you, Simon. That beanie hat looks happy to have found you, by the way.
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 4 года назад
Thanks Barry! There were a few items I wish I’d have had with me - a tarp would have been great, it would have saved me lots of time in shelter building, as would a ferro rod - again time saving, but in not having them, I had to think about using what nature provides, so glad I didn’t have them really! I think the thing I missed the most was some other form of vessel - a cup or better still, a water bottle - I had to plan carefully when it came to water collection and boiling as my pot was also needed for cooking and collecting food - if I’d had a water bottle I could boil water then store it - freeing up the pot. 👍
