really like the mirror backsplash, and the ‘breakfast’ counter. We’re looking to renovate a small galley (no open side) and looking for space saving ideas to make the area seem bigger

As a qualified Joiner who amongst other things makes kitchens I can say from experience that they are overpriced by a fair amount. Plenty of suppliers out there that will supply a standard kitchen (which is what Howdens supply) but far wider choice of spec, better quality and far cheaper and I say that as a Howdnes account holder of 25yrs. In my opinion they are average quality and poor on price. I got a price from them for my own mothers kicthen and they were £1500 more expensive for fewer units,less pull outs and low grade worktops. There is little to promote Howdens in reality but if someone is happy with the result then the rest is immaterial.

@@FinanceDee Hi and thanks for the reply. I could but then I would be accused of slating Howdens whilst promoting other companies. They all use cheap Melamine faced chipboard ,usually made by Egger. Howdens always edgebanded (covering the cut/seen ends of the components which formed each cabinet with a paper thin 0.8mm edgebanding which damage very easily whilst other companies used 2-3mm ABS plastic edgebandings which put up with knocks from saucpans etc when putting them away. Other companies had 15-20 or more colour choices just for the carcasses and all colour coded edgebandings all round whereas Howdens for years had a choice of off white of Oak effect. Their pull outs with baskets were horrifically expensive compared to others. Howdens never use to supply their units with drawers,pull outs,baskets,doors,drawer fronts etc and even feet bosses factory fitted but others do. This all takes time and costs money if you're emplying a fitter and as I mentioned Howdens are more expensive to start with. I even had one "designer" plan a kitchen where she put a wine rack each side of the hob extractor believe it or not. I could go on but as I say ,if someone is happy with their kitchen then that is great. I make Joinery including bespoke kitchens which are expensive compared to the likes of Howdens but if people do their research they can find better for cheaper. @@FinanceDee One last thing that drives account holders mad and why I rarely every buy from them is their claim to be "trade only" when in fact they have sold to the general public for at least 20yrs and also their discount pricing which is so vague it's lamentable. Even with 65% discount it was often more expensive than others for fewer units etc.. Anyone from Howdens reading this can look up my name and account to check me out. I don't hide away and give my honest opinion based on my close on 40yrs in Construction and 25yrs of being an account holder. 🙂

Thanks for your comment Ade 😊 We do like our kitchen and have had no problems with it so far, but I hear everything you’re saying. It came out more affordable for us at the time but that was with some haggling. I’m not opposed to keeping my options open though for any future kitchen renovations if we move at some point

@@FinanceDee Hi Dee , thanks for the reply. I've always had the opinion that kitchens are effectively just wooden boxes on feet with doors and drawers. My first house had a very basic Howdens 600 kitchen in and It had been looked after by the previous owners (Family) and was still serviceable when I replaced it. It had lasted 24yrs. I've also seen high end bespoke kicthens look very shabby after 6yrs. All the best to you. Kind regards Ade 🙂

Thank you so much. Mirror was just through a builders friend of a friend of a friend. Hob was from appliances direct (look out for Black Friday sales in November) and extractor was from Amazon.

Yes some of it we did ourselves (not plumbing, not electrics). Most of the kitchen (90%) was done by a kitchen fitter who was an all around handyman so not extortionate prices. Hubby did the last 10% of bits. I don’t recall saying in the video we paid £1,000 for plumbing, electrics, and kitchen fitting though 🤔

We asked for a recommendation from our builder and then we did the kitchen fitter on a day rate which worked out cheaper for us. That’s not always the case though. Plus my husband did some of the kitchen fitting himself to cut back on costs. It took just over a week in total.

My husband said “the ducts were ran in the ground at the same time as the damp coursing and the ducting for the original house”. I honestly don’t really know how to explain it myself, but hope that helps somewhat!

We got a cash discount but worktops were around £2k including fitting. However we had quotes for around £4K+ elsewhere which I think is more standard. Worktops are fantastic and don’t mark easily. When it looks like it’ll get stained (like from a curry or red wine) I spray a bleach spray and leave it for 60 seconds, wipe it and it’s completely gone.

Wow that seems like high quotes! Just for the kitchen and not the extension itself? I would definitely recommend checking out Howdens (although you need someone with a trade account with them, like a builder)

He charged us about £250 a day and it only took about 4 days to the bulk of it. My husband finished the last 10% of work.

Yeah my builder had an account with them so had access to Howdens. But I done the negotiations about price and of course discussed kitchen design with them.

@@FinanceDee ah cool makes sense. I love the extractor. Normally they take up too much wall space and distort the streamline of the kitchen.
